The latest Sarah Lancashire drama starts tonight, from the writer of Kirri and National Treasure. Anyone else planning to watch?

The timing of it in regards to Aberfan seemed crass in the extreme.
I'm also bemused by the fact they keep saying it was inspired by Grenfell. In both Grenfell and Aberfan - the victims were supposed to be where they were. That's not the case in The Accident. I also read one review that pointed out Grenfell primarily affected non-white victims.
I think Jack Thorne is a very talented writer but this feels like painting-by-numbers-issue-based drama. All the naunce from National Treasure has been lost. although maybe it is just a shockingly poor opening episode and the rest is amazing

pinksparkleunicorns · 26/10/2019 10:30

If they are claiming it was inspired by Grenfell, what an insult. Grenfell people were just living their normal lives in their homes and tragedy struck. In 'the accident' a bunch of bratty little shits illegally broke into a building site and were stupid enough to have cigarettes and lighters around unknown gas cylinders.

The more I think about this awful drama it makes me actually get angry 😡

KatyCarrCan · 26/10/2019 10:34

pinksparkle yy I agree. Presumably later episodes are about the 'enquiry' and maybe that's where the Grenfell parallels will be more apparent. But, I don't think I'll be watching again to find out.

EleanorReally · 26/10/2019 10:40

so the girl grafitti'd the building that her dad was very involved in, because her dad is a nasty piece of work.
however the man that moved her, and saved her, why was he there?

Idontneeditatall · 26/10/2019 12:40

Ah yes thanks, I guess it must have been the friend who we saw with the ceiling falling on her.
Agree with everyone here that it was rubbish. Especially the scene where they’re all at the building site, seemed like it took about 5 mins for the explosion to happen and then all the bodies to just come out. In reality it would have taken ages to get them out presumably. And SL not going straight to the hospital in the ambulance with her daughter, why would she be visiting later??

Idontneeditatall · 26/10/2019 12:40

And yes, agree there are no comparisons to grenfell, that was entirely different, I can’t understand why it would be compared

Sotiredofthislife · 26/10/2019 15:28

How about.....insurance job on disused factory the company with suit lady couldn’t sell, deliberate explosion detonated by guy who saved the daughter who saw movement or something just past the point of no return, children obviously not meant to be there? Husband somehow involved eg. local council were aware it was going to happen?

Deathraystare · 26/10/2019 15:45

I was watching the japanese thing on the other side as I had watched it last week but was at my friend's so she put it on +1 for me afterwards.

CoolCarrie · 26/10/2019 15:57

Well I won’t be watching any more, very disappointed, and as pp said it’s an insult and distasteful to Aberfan to screen it so close to the anniversary, and to Grenfell. The circumstances are totally different to those desperately tragic events, both of which could have been prevented.

AmIChangingagain · 26/10/2019 16:40

Sotired that sounds exactly right. I was thinking along those lines.

Although I'm not watching any more.

SchadenfiendeUnmortified · 26/10/2019 17:35

I'll get this on catch up - I didn't realise it was on.

BestIsWest · 26/10/2019 18:18

I don’t get the comparison to Aberfan either - in fact I think it’s a distasteful comparison.

LIZS · 26/10/2019 18:36

Nor me, aside from a Welsh setting. All seems tenuous tbh and an attempt to make it topical.

FelixFelicis6 · 26/10/2019 18:49

Glad I’ve seen this before watching it!

eddiemairswife · 26/10/2019 19:11

Why do so many recent dramas turn out to be rubbish in spite of having decent actors in them? I'm finding myself more and more watching Morse, Lewis and Foyle's War on ITV3, even though I've seen them several times before. I even enjoy Midsomer Murders, mainly because of the lovely houses, and at least the stories are understandable; also they are mainly filmed in daylight and not in semi-darkness.

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/10/2019 20:09

Watch Guilt, it's really good, honest.

BitOfFun · 26/10/2019 20:55

@IHaveBrilloHair, what channel is Guilt on?

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/10/2019 21:14

BBC 1, so IPlayer.
It's hilarious in a good way.

BitOfFun · 26/10/2019 21:18

Fantastic, thank you!

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/10/2019 22:12

Let me know what you think.
I don't think there's a thread on here yet.

SouthWestmom · 26/10/2019 22:24

This thread has cheered me right up. Roll on Thursday.

Frillyfarmer · 26/10/2019 22:25

Who has linked the drama to either Grendel or Aberfan - the media or sources linked to C4/ the production?

It's not just poor taste, but absolutely not comparable circumstantially. The only possible link to Aberfan (other than the country it's set in!) is the loss of children, but 5 or 6 teenagers is absolutely no comparison to the lives of (I think?) over 100 school children, in school, learning. The Grendel comparison I don't understand at all?

Frillyfarmer · 26/10/2019 22:25

I apologise that my phone autocorrected Grenfell on all counts there.

CoolCarrie · 26/10/2019 22:36

Guilt is on BBC Two on Wednesday at 9:00 , I can’t get i player here, so going to watch it then. It looks really good and it’s was filmed in Edinburgh, Mark Bonnar is in it, so what’s not to like!

Rainatnight · 26/10/2019 22:40

Thanks for the Guilt recommendation. Just watched it - brilliant.

Great that something good came out of the whole The Accident debacle!
