It's here.

Eight seasons of love, hate, family, battles, history, mystery, myth and legend.

After laying waste to Kings' Landing, what next for Daenerys? Does destiny feel good when you kill thousands of innocents to reach it?

I will really miss these characters and their stories. Epic, must-watch television is rare. Will we ever see its like again?

And now our watch is ended.

Just watched it. Phew! I was so worried after Drogon carried Dany off that the last shot would have been her opening her eyes and them being white walker blue. Thank god they resisted that cliche.

The rest, well. Bran was a shit character but I'm actually ok with him being the king. I liked Sansa and glad she got to be queen of an independent north. I think she deserved it tbh. Arya going exploring, that's what was predicted. And the counsel was very fan-service-y but I'm ok with that too.

Not too bad imo. I was expecting worse.

CodenameVillanelle · 20/05/2019 22:12

The point of him being Targaryen was to evidence the wrongness of Daenarys' belief that she was destined to rule. To prove that birth order and antecedents doesn't make anyone a good or just ruler. It was a device to undermine Daenarys and tip her into paranoia and insecurity. It showed us more about Ned Stark and the kind of person he was which in turn showed us how we are the products of our experiences, not some esoteric 'destiny'. Jon wasn't a Targaryen. He didn't have the madness, the entitlement, the cruelty, the pride etc. He was a Stark, because he was raised by a good man, who damaged his reputation to keep Jon safe.

5foot5 · 20/05/2019 22:16

Well I thought that was a terrific ending. Just right. In fact I have been wowed by the whole series. Reading some of the comments it feels like some people were watching a different show,

For ages we have been speculating that maybe the end would be a democracy, so when Sam was making his speech we were punching the air. Of course that turned out to be a step too far but they have got a bit closer.

On the whole I think this is as close to a happy ending as there could be. I loved it.

RJnomore1 · 20/05/2019 22:20

For me it could have ended at the point Jon killed dany. The rest was superfluous. Her face as she realised, I’ve just watched that bit again and this time I’m in tears. And poor Drogon, the weapon of mass destruction who turned out to be more intelligent than any of the humans involved.

Jon’s ending was not good. Beric dondarrian and Melisandre both died after they fulfilled their destiny and reason for coming back to life. If Jon’s destiny was to kill dany he should have died too. But not by Drogon.

Drogon and Ghost could have run off and been like donkey and the dragon from shrek. Except, wolf and dragon.

Iambuffy · 20/05/2019 22:21

I was right about someone writing the story!!!!

TraffordTansy · 20/05/2019 22:22

@5foot5 I agree! Just brilliant, so much to think about.

JasperRising · 20/05/2019 22:23

They brought Edmure and Sweet Robyn out from wherever they were locked up for two seasons! (That made me disproportionately happy).

I liked it even if it wasn't as emotionally hard hitting as episodes 3 and 5. A few clichéd moments (I predicted that Missandei would die and the unsullied go to Naath back in episode 2 when she and Grey Worm were planning for after the war. And I guess we Brienne would write 'he died protecting his queen' before she got to the last line of Jaimie's entry in the book) but I didn't guess Bran on the throne or that Dany would die so early in the episode. That was a real shock as I thought it would be the end.

Loved that Brienne became Lord Commander of the kingsguard. I think the only way they could restore order was my having a ruler who wasn't either Jon or Dany; if either of them had ended on the throne there would have been rebellions straight away. Love that Sansa is queen in the north - she was right, the north sacrificed so much and whole swathes of the country had no idea, I wouldn't go back to being a province (lucky for her it was Bran as king though).

I really think it works with how GRRM started off back when it was a trilogy. The first book is about Ned Stark and his family really with a side plot of Dany (Ice and Fire) and it came full circle back to being about the Stark children. Just a pity he had got so distracted with subplots and side characters that is difficult to get the books back to his planned ending.

I am left with a few questions:
Where were Gilly and baby Sam?
Is Jon technical now a deserter from the Nights Watch?
Did the Dothraki just bugger off back to the grass sea?

Lweji · 20/05/2019 22:24

Rewatching it.

The first scene with Tyrion takes us to Hiroshima and those photos of Vietnamese people after napalm attacks.

RJnomore1 · 20/05/2019 22:25

Oh and what a sneaky little shit Bran turned out to be.

TraffordTansy · 20/05/2019 22:26

I thought there was a lot in the last two episodes reminiscent of Hiroshima. Hadn't thought of the napalm attacks but that's so true.

Lweji · 20/05/2019 22:28

and Tyrion - most powerful man after the king but probably miserable in a job he didnt want....
I think he was kidding himself. He did love it.

Flump9 · 20/05/2019 22:30

The wall was destroyed at Eastwatch by the sea not Castle Black.

CarolDanvers · 20/05/2019 22:37

I loved it, absolutely loved it. For me it ended perfectly. I thought I was fine till ds (16) came in and asked if it had finished just as the credits rolled, and then I started blubbing. Nine years I have loved that show. I don't think there'll be anything as good ever again. Jon and Ghost's reunion was the best bit. Jon isn't going back is he? He's going to live with The Wildlings. I disagree he had a bad ending, he's where he wants to be. Loved it all!

JasperRising · 20/05/2019 22:40

I do wish Meera had come back with Edmure and Robyn. She must represent an area of the north now. Her take on Bran being king would be interesting...

itswinetime · 20/05/2019 22:41

I just re watched it and yes I think it was a good ending on balance it was right for the story they were telling.

Is anyone watching throne-cast?? I never thought I'd say it but bring back jimmy Carr! And I hate him who that rapper? Has he ever watched the show? Just stop talking to him!

8dayweek · 20/05/2019 22:42

After a second watch, I think I'm happy enough with it. I do wish it had been spread across more episodes with more dialogue and gap filling, rather than lots of off screen assumptions.

Loved the dragon wings as Dany approaches. The nazi-esque imagery was very powerful.

Silly, but I think my favourite bit was Brienne writing in the white book. IIRC that's a nod to the books as Jaime agonises over his own entry after Ser Barristan is dismissed (having filled in his page in the book prior to leaving).

I'm a little disappointed that Bran won't be the permanent and perennial Stark in Winterfell by becoming the weirwood tree though!

itswinetime · 20/05/2019 22:43

I do wish Meera had come back with Edmure and Robyn. She must represent an area of the north now.

It seemed like Sansa was representing all of the north the way she spoke. It would have been nice to see her again though. I still am not sure who some of those lords were meant to be 🤷🏻‍♀️

8dayweek · 20/05/2019 22:44

Just put Thronecast on. Seriously?! The final one and they couldn't drag out some ex characters or something!

GoodBoyGhost · 20/05/2019 22:46

The whole of this season has been rushed. It just felt like the writers got bored and wanted it over so just wrote "and then drogon burned the city and then Jon killed Dany and then bran was king the end."

Loved Brienne writing Jamie's story.

Loved Ghost cuddles.

Didn't love much else!

Dickybow321 · 20/05/2019 22:46

Watching it again with dh as he doesn't know I've Seen it

Haha, I did this too!

Dickybow321 · 20/05/2019 22:47

What does fan service mean?

8dayweek · 20/05/2019 22:47

@JasperRising I'd have loved to find out more about the crannogmen and the Reeds.

@itswinetime Ditto - There was the guy next to Sam, who was he? And the other guy next to Yohn Royce (not Sweet Robin).

itswinetime · 20/05/2019 22:47

8dayweek

I'm glad someone else is feeling my pain! Al Murray and Lauren Laverne, I can't take just about but the rapper I honestly don't think he has ever watched a show!

8dayweek · 20/05/2019 22:49

@itswinetime I really loved Thronecast to begin with, but this is just cringey.

8dayweek · 20/05/2019 22:50

@itswinetime Do you get the feeling that Sue wants to say "WTF, did you even WATCH ANY OF IT" to that guy!
