Bloody hell! We've just watched episode 1. That was intense.

I'm a bit shocked.

This is gripping TV and started a really interesting discussion with DS (16) last night..

I grew up in Cumbria which was one of the areas in the UK affected by fallout , I recall a class mates mum getting a job "testing sheep' and never gave it a second thought at the time. He asked 'how did you not know? Cue explanation of no internet, sky TV or 24 hour news channels and that combined with Russians playing down the incident to their own people, never mind anywhere else, meant that there was little talk about it (at least that's how I remember it). Watching this now I am actually glad I didn't know....

MockerstheFeManist · 19/05/2019 11:39

Glad we're onto this.

This is bloody brilliant. The people responsible clearly sat down beforehand and watched "Edge of Darkness," the greatest TV drama ever ever ever.

Added to that, the exposition of the decadent and collapsing Soviet political system is superb. The strengths and weaknessese are there for all to see: You want a thousand buses and several hindred tons of Boron, you got it. You want transparency and accountability, go somewhere else.

And I knew it was serious at the time, but I never realsied it was that serious.

Want a disc release of this to keep.

loz1986 · 19/05/2019 11:44

Just to add.. this program has real peoples lives in it! Some of the people so far appear in a memoirs book I've read called voices of Chernobyl. If you like to read then it's ace! You get to know from the people who where there what actually happened to them. I couldn't put it down, well worth a read.

loz1986 · 19/05/2019 11:45

Are correction it's called Chernobyl prayer

NannaNoodleman · 19/05/2019 15:19

I'd love to get my hands on that book. I'll keep a look out for it.

I know what you mean about knowing it was serious but not really knowing... I think the horror was unimaginable and now it's imaginable.

Mockers i remember watching Edge of Darkness just before Christmas 1985 with my dad (i mentioned this drama on the other thread) its how i learnt about radiation poisoning.

Also there is the film The China Syndrome.

a nuclear incident in Pennsylvania in 1979

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Mile_Island_accident

Cant watch Chernobyl as i dont have Sky.

MockerstheFeManist · 19/05/2019 17:38

There was also our very own little nuclear ooops to worry those Cumbrian sheep:

The podcasts following the episodes are excellent too, the one this week talks about which if the characters are real and which fictional. Last week I rewatched the first episode after listening to the podcast and picked up on details I'd missed first time, might rewatch the second tonight I think, it is gripping stuff.

Helmetbymidnight · 20/05/2019 10:19

Caught up with Ep. 2.

It's a beautifully done drama, I think it really works. Such a horrendous subject matter, and they have managed to convey the horror of all that - but managed to give us a 'story', intrigue, characters and hooks to keep us watching.

I will listen to the podcast soon.

HerondaleDucks · 20/05/2019 14:45

Where is the podcast available from. I'm definitely interested

LoadsaBlusher · 20/05/2019 20:08

Wondering why tonight’s has been pushed to a 2am slot ?
Will record it on sky and watch tomorrow
Wonder if the viewing figures weren’t as high as expected ?

NannaNoodleman · 20/05/2019 20:16

Has it? We've been catching it on Now TV. I hope it isn't a ratings failure. Maybe it's too dark for a lot of people.

OP posts:
MotherOfTheNoise · 20/05/2019 20:31

I hope they don't cancel it. I'm finding it so fascinating and horrifying all in one!

LoadsaBlusher · 20/05/2019 21:09

Sorry it’s on at 2am the morning then 9pm tue night .
I had thought it was Monday night for some reason
Just double checked my planner
I think it’s fantastic , but yes very bleak , maybe not to everyone’s “ entertainment “ standards

LoadsaBlusher · 20/05/2019 21:12

Tuesday 9pm as usual... sorry was flicking through and seen the 2am showing and thought it had been banished , apologies 🤣

RuggerHug · 20/05/2019 21:16

I thought it was repeated at 2am? Really enjoying(that seems like the wrong word though) this. The podcasts mentioned are great for details and facts that might not be obvious or seem real. The lights going out at the end of the last episode...SadSadSad

RuggerHug · 21/05/2019 08:53

Just saw on Twitter that it's screened the same time as the US so that's the 2am explained.

HerondaleDucks · 21/05/2019 21:10

Jesus episode 3 was so bleak. Those poor poor poor men

NannaNoodleman · 21/05/2019 21:28

Fuck... those radiation burns(?)

OP posts:
HerondaleDucks · 21/05/2019 22:58

The podcasts are really good. I accidentally listened to 3 on the way home cause it was on autoplay and them talking about it didn't do justice to seeing the impact of radiation poisoning visually.
When she said he had no face, I was in bits.

RuggerHug · 21/05/2019 23:32

When they said they didn't show 'He had no face.. .' ....fuck.

This show is brilliantly done and the fact that we're all the way we are watching shows it works. The people who saved us all need to be honoured and known. If this show makes that happen(because so many people don't know) I'm all for the hardness and misery it brings to us who remember. Flowers

DobbyLovesSocks · 22/05/2019 09:18

I've been watching it. Harrowing, very well acted, but just awful. I said to DH last night, just when you think it can't get worse the next episode does. Seeing the men in hospital was awful and then the funeral at the end. I am struggling with keeping up with it (who's who etc) so when it's finished DH and I will watch the whole series again.

MockerstheFeManist · 22/05/2019 10:36

I don't see how they can 'cancel' it.

It's not like there can be a sequel.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/05/2019 11:11

They're not cancelling it. The poster made a mistake/misinterpretation.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/05/2019 11:12

It is excellent - the way the camera focussed on the cement filling over the graves, the dog chasing the coach, beautiful and heart-breaking details again and again.
