Bloody hell! We've just watched episode 1. That was intense.

I'm a bit shocked.

Can anyone tell me how to get the podcasts??
Ps I know nothing about podcasts, can I just download to my phone? Is it free?

ExpletiveDelighted · 26/05/2019 16:08

Is there a podcast app on your phone? Just search Chernobyl in it. It is free.

Paradyning · 26/05/2019 16:30

Which character was that @Shivermetimbers0112?

Paradyning · 26/05/2019 16:31

The podcasts are fantastic thanks for pointing them out.
The IMDB reviews are interesting too. Lots of Ukrainian/Belarusian posters saying how absolutely authentic looking everything is too.

IntoValhalla · 26/05/2019 16:39

DH and I watched the first 3 episodes back to back the other night, and I’ve not been this impressed by a TV show for a long time!
Obviously I knew the basics of what happened at Chernobyl, but actually getting an “insider” view of it all is astounding Shock
I’m ex-military, so we get some training on what to do in the event of nuclear attack etc and are taught the basics on spotting signs of radiation poisoning etc, but seeing those men (the young firefighter and the plant workers) in the hospital suffering from late stage radiation poisoning is genuinely one of the most horrendous things I’ve ever seen Sad They can tell you till the cows come home what happens to the body, but actually seeing it portrayed so accurately like that was truly gut wrenching. I’m now dreading potentially seeing the complications that may be caused to the baby, by Vasily’s pregnant wife being in such close contact with him in the hospital Confused

Shivermetimbers0112 · 26/05/2019 17:24

@Paradyning
the fireman’s wife, not sure how far along she is though.

Paradyning · 26/05/2019 17:39

I think she was a few months along

It is actually chilling me to the bone watching this.

Paradyning · 27/05/2019 08:26

The radioactive breast milk is chilling.

aprilviolets · 27/05/2019 09:52

with the late stage radiation poisoning, I'm horrified that they had to endure a long, slow death. It was clear that death was the only outcome for all of them, so why they weren't assisted on their way is beyond me.

IntoValhalla · 27/05/2019 12:14

aprilviolets I said that to DH too Sad although most “humane methods” ie morphine overdose etc wouldn’t have been possible at that stage because there is no way to get IV lines into the patient, and the massive internal bleeding means that ingesting anything is impossible too Sad If it was going to be done, it needed to be done in the early stages Sad
But in all honesty, I’d rather take a bullet to the head than die in such a hideous way. I think most people would.

iklboo · 27/05/2019 22:19

Thank you @Paradyning - I've downloaded the book. I was 17 when it happened and had grown up with all the When The Wind Blows / Threads stuff. We were all really worried we'd be poisoned by the radiation fallout.

NannaNoodleman · 28/05/2019 17:28

I googled about the fireman's wife. I was wondering what happened to her after the exposure. Awful! She was so brave - being with him throughout and holding his hand.

I’m just sitting down to watch episode 4 now.
Anyone watched it yet? How prepared should I be on a scale of 1 to fucking horrific?

Bravelurker · 28/05/2019 19:55

I cried for the first time in episode 4, then signed up to donate to battersea dogs home Sad.

cricketmum84 · 28/05/2019 19:57

Oh god. Episode 4 is going to break me isn't it? I was bad enough when they wouldn't let that woman take her dog with her.

NannaNoodleman · 28/05/2019 20:18

Going to watch it later. Need to wait until after dark so the tears are less visible.

OP posts:
Bravelurker · 28/05/2019 20:36

Brace yourself Cricket, currently sporting the foetal position Sad.

Miljah · 28/05/2019 21:06

Oh god. The cow.

IntoValhalla · 28/05/2019 21:12

Miljah I actually said to DH “I think I’m more upset about the cow than I would have been had it been grandma” Blush

Possibly need to give my moral compass a little recalibration Blush

Miljah · 28/05/2019 21:20

And there will be pets, too. Steel yourself.

Bravelurker · 28/05/2019 21:28

And then you realise that the animals are actually the lucky ones and the fact that they are so clueless and innocent and trusting and oh god Sad. Heartbreaking.
