Bloody hell! We've just watched episode 1. That was intense.

I'm a bit shocked.

Brave I had to keep telling myself over and over, “they are radioactive puppies. They are going to die a horrible death anyway eventually...”

Didn’t really make it any better though Sad

HerondaleDucks · 28/05/2019 21:34

I had to cuddle my dog for most of that episode. Horrific

AnyFucker · 28/05/2019 21:43

.

Bravelurker · 28/05/2019 21:46

I know and I loved the guy in charge, who had fought in a war so would be hardened by the experience warning the young lad not to let them suffer. I cried at that the most - a tiny bit of compassion in a monstrous ocean pure awfulness.

It's incredible to watch, the way the radiation poison worked, I've read so much since watching this

As an aside, did anyone else think that the (silent) third soldier killing the pets was remarkably like Johnny Depp???

iklboo · 28/05/2019 21:54

Chocolate - yes he did, didn't he?

That was a brutal episode. I'm enjoying this so much (if enjoy is the right word).

Miljah · 28/05/2019 21:55

I might be about to be v ignorant, but, don't we now know some areas weren't nearly as badly irradiated as we all thought?

ElenadeClermont · 28/05/2019 22:21

I was way more worried about the soldiers. The USSR was on the verge of bankruptcy, still in the grip of the war in Afghanistan.
The US bombed Tripoli just before the Chernobyl explosion, and the whole world held their breath. Scary times.

frugalkitty · 28/05/2019 22:23

Just watched episode 4. Such good tv! It's so harrowing but compelling at the same time. Those poor animals, and the soldier insisting they mustn't let them suffer. Heartbreaking. It really shows the bravery of the ordinary men and women though.

bluetongue · 28/05/2019 22:51

I’d stumbled across an online article a couple of weeks agree which mentioned the puppies so I had mentally myself for the puppies. Managed to keep it together until the scene where they dump the bodies into the pit and then the tears came Sad

imamearcat · 28/05/2019 23:03

Did anyone notice that the military guy who was sending the guys up on the roof is they same guy who does the narrative voiceover for salvage hunters??

Other than that little distraction.. gets more haunting every episode.

iklboo · 29/05/2019 11:03

The military guy is Finchy from the office and does the Dacia adverts as well.

Jared Harris (the expert) is Richard Harris' son.

bruffin · 29/05/2019 11:56

HelenaDove

It was Silkwood i learned about radiation poisoning, although I saw China Syndrome at the cinema when it came out.

We had a group locally to us who would take children from Chernobyl for a month ie think and make sure they had medical care etc

The programme is excellent but very heavy going and intense

IntoValhalla · 29/05/2019 12:24

imamearcat he was in an earlier season of Game Of Thrones too!

BigcatLittlecat · 29/05/2019 12:32

It's the most horrifying thing I have ever watched! Absolutely fantastic! The puppies last night got to me though, they were in my dreams last night! Some amazing bravery went on but some of the decisions the Russians made....
Emily Watson is playing a blinder. Fair play to all involved it's excellent television.

iklboo · 29/05/2019 14:00

The Woolly Hugs group on here do blankets for children of Chernobyl.

Silvercatowner · 29/05/2019 21:25

Oh that was so hard to watch. The acting is amazing. The young man shooting the animals had such an expressive face.

NannaNoodleman · 29/05/2019 21:25

That old woman and the cow, the firefighter's wife, the human chain to clear the roof, the older soldier's compassion... it's heartbreaking.

Brought a lump to the throat when she lost the baby, as my DD was born Jan1987, conceived around the incident. I did however have a miscarriage at 15 weeks when she was 18 month, so I will never know if Mother Nature was at play.

Paradyning · 30/05/2019 02:01

I thought I'd read somewhere that the fireman's wife miscarried directly. After the funeral irl.
Anyone know if this is true or not?

StarStruckStarGazer · 30/05/2019 06:33

Is it a new thing on Sky Atlantic?

cricketmum84 · 30/05/2019 06:47

I saw a discussion on the programme on a local fb group last week. The number of people who thought it was fictional was astounding!

Pootle40 · 30/05/2019 06:58

It's an excellent portrayal of what happened. Think only one episode left.

Did anyone else spot that the guy in charge of the miners was Little Mo's 'Trevor' from Eastenders?

StarStruckStarGazer · 30/05/2019 06:59

Oh crikey, I'd like to say you're joking me, I can well believe it though. I can't remember if it was on TV / YouTube or both, but they showed the evacuation, then they showed how nature reclaimed quite a bit, urban explorers (my dream hobby) went in with a Geiger counter, looking round places that were ok.

IIRC many animals exist there, quite wild ones too.

Will have to see if I can access it on Sky.
