Bloody hell! We've just watched episode 1. That was intense.

I'm a bit shocked.

There are still around 2,500 people living in Chernobyl (not Prypyat. Working on decommissioning I am guessing. They are allowed to spend 2 walks in the zone, then go home for 2 weeks.

diddl · 14/06/2019 17:57

I think that it's well done & am "enjoying" it.

I wonder how much has been added for drama & have assumed that some characters are amalgamations to get across events that happened.

With the cow/old woman-I thought that she would be shot as well!

I did wonder about the pets-I would have thought it quite labour intensive & had thought that they might have just put poison down.

Also the lead lined coffins-I also wondered about civilians being there & whether it might have been more covered up.

Although some might not have got the implications or if they had, had no means of passing the info to the "outside world"

Paradyning · 14/06/2019 18:42

If you listen to the podcasts you'll see it is extremely close to what happened. Verbatim sometimes. One or two characters are amalgamations (the female scientist) and some characters were not at the trial but pretty much close to life.

The coffins were zinc lined too not lead.

Ontheboardwalk · 16/06/2019 21:11

It’s what happened to all the people after I can’t stop thinking about. What would have happened if the firemen, miners and all the others didn’t step up to stop it turning into so much more.

It’s ok because, as per Soviet Russia, the death toll was only 31!!

HerondaleDucks · 16/06/2019 21:17

There was a really interesting programme on BBC Four today about the Chernobyl sarcophagus and the new one they replaced it with in 2017. Was really interesting.

lotusbell · 16/06/2019 22:02

@HerondaleDucks, thanks for posting that. I read it earlier, planned to watch it or at least record, went out if my head as soon as I had got home! I'll look for it on catch up

Fraxion · 17/06/2019 16:42

Absolutely brilliant. Desperately sad but brilliantly done. Finished it last night and thought about it repeatedly today.

Agree, it was a hard watch, very haunting.

MissB83 · 20/06/2019 09:16

The BBC 4 documentary was fascinating for anyone who hasn't seen it (I think it was a repeat). So much amazing engineering!

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/06/2019 09:18

I downloaded that last night Miss, will hopefully watch it over the weekend.

MissB83 · 20/06/2019 09:21

I think it's quite nice after this amazing catastrophe to see experts from different countries working together to create something.

diddl · 23/06/2019 18:45

The podcasts were interesting weren't they?

Thanks for that, Paradyning

Also saw the programme about replacing the sarcophagus-amazing!

ShhhSecretSquirrel · 25/06/2019 06:35

Oh gosh, Legasov's final speech about truth and lies - LOVE it! Strangely fancied Boris too 😂

I couldn't do the grim scenes, I had to look away. I was very annoying going ooh that's Paul Ritter, ooh that's him, ooh and him. DH wanted to me to quit it lol.

I thought it was fantastic, DH said it would propaganda to make Russia look bad, SS had no idea how bad the Eastern Bloc was after the war, even in the 80's. Seeing as he's such a smartie pants, I said I'd like a 4000 word essay on living conditions in Ukraine in the 1980's. He had no idea why people would be watching what was essentially a nuclear fall out.

Anyone who hasn't seen it or we're put off by graphic scenes it does get better. Plus HBO give us naked men 😆

MissB83 · 25/06/2019 10:52

shhsecretsquirrel agree about Boris. He was very manly and assertive Grin

ShhhSecretSquirrel · 25/06/2019 12:14

I'm so glad it's not just me, then my dreams were dashed when I saw him in real life. As DH said oh it's propaganda, I thought well YouTube will have something to say on it. We watched a few videos about it.

I just felt such empathy for the poor souls who suffered in anyway. Obviously we were aware of it happening but not the impact on life, or maybe we'd rather not think about it.

Crayolaaa · 27/06/2019 12:51

Has the link to the Amazon list for Children of Chernobyl been posted? Please could you share it with me.

fussychica · 30/06/2019 17:16

Fantastic series. Really well done.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 05/07/2019 14:27

Oh God .

Just watched it . I don't know where to start really . I will come back when I have the words .

Zog14 · 07/07/2019 15:20

It gives you 30 days free if you sign up as a newbie too .
Long as you cancel before the free trial is up you will pay nothing .

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 07/07/2019 17:45

Sorry , Not Netflix . I have been watching that a lot too so got confused.
As PPs said SKY Atalantic

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 07/07/2019 17:58

Well I finished it . Harrowing from start to end .

I , like other PPs, did not really know the ins and outs but do remember the news of it (the official version anyway) and was a little concerned about acid rain I think we thought it was . I was 21 in 1986.

So much of it will remain with me
The Firemen
The Animals shot because they had to be really :(
The old lady milking the cow and what happened to it , milk still coming out its teats.

The thin thin man (who was already thin) who looked almost like a manequain of pain
The lady who was pregnant and they said she would never have children after losing her fire fighter husband and (unborn) child. However, as we were told, she fought the odds.

PriestessModwena · 08/07/2019 11:10

I'm a bit miffed it's gone onto CatchUp which we don't have, but I would love!

Even though it annoys DH, I like to watch things a few times, as some bits I just didn't / couldn't watch. Also I think if you see a programme like this 2/3 times, you'll pick up stuff you didn't catch the first time.

It's a bit like GoT, as when it deviates from the books, subtle hints are dropped, you have to pay more attention.

Is it still on Now TV?

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 08/07/2019 11:41

I have Sky so not sure but as its very popular I imagine it is still on NOW TV.
Bit of a heads up to folks without Now or SKY who want to see it .
When I got sky I also got a password to log into SKY TV online . If you have a friend who has that you could watch it via that .

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 08/07/2019 11:42

Just had a look on NOW TV for you .

Its streaming until ,lol, truly says this .31st December 2025
