What is Azor Ahai?

ElenadeClermont · 29/04/2019 12:12

Azor Ahai is a legendary figure in the faith of R'hllor, the Lord of Light. Thousands of years ago, he forged the sword Lightbringer which he used to defeat the darkness of the Great Other. This came at a price, however, as in order to unleash the sword's true powers he had to plunge it into the heart of his loving wife, Nissa Nissa. A prophecy foretells that he will be reborn as The Prince That Was Promised.

What is Azor Ahai?
The prince that was promised. The prophecy is that he will end the long night with his flaming sword. Milisandre thinks it's Stannis, then she thinks it's Jon. Not sure if he's called Azor Ahai in the show, might just be 'prince that's promised'.

TheLastNigel · 29/04/2019 12:17

It surely can't be the end of the whole NK story arc can it? There must be something else with that or else it a bit of an anticlimax really...

HandsOffMyRights · 29/04/2019 12:35

Ah 'root and stem' the GOT 'right to be interviewed by an officer at least one rank higher.'

Although I think "Winter is coming" had a better ring to it.

binkyblinky · 29/04/2019 12:37

I agree about the Azor Ahai theory being either Dondarrion or Arya. And I suppose it would be a fitting ending to the long night that the sun came up as Melisandre took off her choker and walked north (the sun was coming up in the distance I think!)

Robin2323 · 29/04/2019 12:40

Wasn't the knight king created by the children of the forest, in order to kill man, who was in fact destroying the forest ?

And then the children realised they couldn't control him and had created Frankenstein' monster ?

AussieGrrl · 29/04/2019 12:45

I'm starting to think Gendry and Arya will take the throne. She may not be the prince that was promised, but may have possibly already conceived him.

Arya has been my favourite character since season one so I may be biased

ArabellaDoreenFig · 29/04/2019 12:54

Just watched. That was the best piece of storytelling I have ever seen. Will regroup and catch up with the thread later!

itswinetime · 29/04/2019 12:54

I thought the Prince that was promised in prophecy had to come from house Targaryen? I also thought that the prophecy was the Prince would bring the dawn? After the long night. Arya ended the night so the promos related to what comes next I think?

Azor Ahai was the original so to speak the Prince that was promised is him reborn (I think that bit has always confused me slightly.

But ultimately it is a prophecy that I think has never been heard in full (by anyone we know) , is so old no one knows where it comes from and is so vague you could make it fit almost anyone I'm sure even the night king could fit it if you tried hard enough!

agirlhasnonameX · 29/04/2019 12:55

Yes he was.

I was surprised that killing NK also killed the white walkers. I figured since he created them rather than raised them from the dead like the wights, they would have to be killed separately.

agirlhasnonameX · 29/04/2019 12:58

I thought the Prince that was promised in prophecy had to come from house Targaryen?
I don't think he had to come from Targaryens? Prince Rhaegar thought he was the prince that was promised though, then he thought his children would be- which is why people thought it might be Jon.

RJnomore1 · 29/04/2019 12:59

Ah ok I stand corrected about fire proof targs! I don’t know where I picked that up from it wasn’t just dany...

When did Jon get burned though I have no recollection!

DeadWife · 29/04/2019 13:02

A Prince could be male or female until the 14th century when Princess as a Latin feminine description first arrived into English.

itswinetime · 29/04/2019 13:08

Prince Rhaegar thought he was the prince that was promised though, then he thought his children would be-

I might well be wrong but I thought he thought that because of prophecy? I thought there was s prophecy saying the prince would come from the line of the mad king? Be born under a bleeding star raise dragons and I can't remember anything else I might be wrong through or I may have added 2 different things together in my head!

DeadWife · 29/04/2019 13:10

My brain is also scrambled itswine, been up since 2 ya know Grin.

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 29/04/2019 13:13

I don't think Gilly survived. She wasn't in the crowd at the end when the walkers were dead.

Fucking fantastic. I've done the holy trinity of hand on mouth tv/film viewing this weekend with Endgame, Line of Duty and GoT.

Sam annoyed the shit out of me. Should have been in the crypt.

I called Theon dying when he appeared last week. Same with Jorah. I thought Brienne was a gonna after her arc with being knighted last week but SO PLEASED she survived. Same with Jaime.

Ayra is a bad ass. Didn't see that coming. Missed Tormund during it, would have liked to see a little more.

itswinetime · 29/04/2019 13:14

Mine too I'm very likely wrong or mixing up to different things 🤷🏻‍♀️

agirlhasnonameX · 29/04/2019 13:17

itswinetime I think he thought it was him because he was 'born in salt and smoke' as the prophecy said.

When did Jon get burned though I have no recollection!
When they bring dead men to the wall, Jon grabs a lantern with his bare hand and burns his hand doing so.

HandsOffMyRights · 29/04/2019 13:22

I thought the Prince that was promised in prophecy had to come from house Targaryen

If s/he is the lovechild of Arya and Gendry then don't the Baratheons have some Targ lineage?

agirlhasnonameX · 29/04/2019 13:23

Although it does also say he/she will be born when the red comet bleeds and wake dragons from stone.
I guess none of it really fits in with it being Dondarrion but I think they are more like riddles than anything.

CalmConfident · 29/04/2019 13:25

I bet that brave little girl in the crypt has somehow been instrumental in saving littlr Sam - think Gilly is a goner

SweetSummerchild · 29/04/2019 13:30

A few thoughts on reflection:

I wasn’t keen on the zombies int he crypts and the hiding in the ‘alcove of convenience’. I would really have liked to see Sansa show some leadership like she did in Blackwater to calm the people in the crypts rather than making more snarky remarks about the dragon queen. It was a missed opportunity.

Sam has some serious f*cking plot armour! How did so many hard-as-nails wildlings die and he survived?

I thought the first 30 minutes was better than the last 30 minutes. Considering how truly terrifying the zombie horde looked there were far too few main character deaths in the end.

SweetSummerchild · 29/04/2019 13:34

itswinetime Rhaegar was thought to be the PTWP by Maester Aemon as he was born ‘amongst smoke and salt’ (disaster at Summerhall) and from the line of Aerys. The Ghost of High Heart (a friend of Jenny of Oldstones) prophesied this which possibly (or not) led to Aegon V trying to hatch a dragon egg using wildfire at Summerhall.

ElenadeClermont · 29/04/2019 13:35

The Prince that was Promised prophecy was made by the Ghost of High Heart, who was a friend of Jenny of Oldstones. But the same stort exists in many cultures in the Song of Ice and Fire universe. We are all confusing Azor Ahai and TPTWP, because they are very similar. Not our fault.

Jon burnt his hand when the wights attacked Lord Commander Mormont and he fought them off with fire.
