And with Andrew Scott,
he is great
as is Olivia Colman

Is he hot? Aside from the Ant and Dec look alikeness, a man of god is a bit of a turn off.

I thought the priest storyline in a Thorn Birds was hot because he was obviously fighting against his feeling and losing This one is way too easily led.

I love bits of it and bits of it I find a bit trite. I’m not sure if FB wasn’t tall thin and a bit posh the whole series would fail.

BertrandRussell · 02/04/2019 23:58

“Is he hot?”

For some reason this storyline seems to have reduced a lot of sensible women on here and elsewhere to 5th form common room level. Very odd.

enjoyingscience · 03/04/2019 00:06

@superchill - it’s because OC has reached official National Treasure status, so she can say what she likes now. She could call someone a cunt on bbc breakfast and it would probably be fine. If she called me a cunt to my face I’d probably say thank you.

ByeClaire · 03/04/2019 00:16

I loved episode 4, not episode 5 so much although I adore anything with Claire in it (and think the actor is phenomenal, much better than PWB).

What particularly grated about Ep 5 is Martin's line of "lucky priest". Why can't he just be a sleaze and an arsehole, why does he have to be actually infatuated with FB as well? Hmm That line undercut the genuine vulnerability he was showing about not wanting Claire to leave him. But that's the recurring theme and a huge part of ep 5 - that FB is so hot and kooky that she has all these men lusting after her and falling for her.

I do think a lot of it is brilliant, but practically all of what makes it especially brilliant for me is not FB or PWB as a performer as I think the FB character is too one-dimensional. It's very much a posh girl playing at being allegedly cool and naughty when essentially it's all rather tiresome, affected and cliched, like the shagging a priest.

Where PWB totally nailed it for me though acting-wise is Ep4. And yes the ByeClaire/Klare/Clare line in Ep 5 Grin

And I do think Andrew Scott is totally hot in this. It's got nothing to do with him being a priest for me - I'm an atheist so it's more of a turn-off - and everything to do with his acting and accent.

Duoscoo · 03/04/2019 00:34

@PaulHollywoodsSexGut

What if HP has a split personality and is both paedophile brother AND hot priest? 😱

ByeClaire · 03/04/2019 00:39

Grin @Duoscoo

As sick as this sounds, I do really hope there's some pay-off for the paedophile comment - it would be v disappointing if it was just a lazy word thrown in rather than a plot point.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 03/04/2019 00:49

Well it works just as a self contained joke. That could be enough.

Duoscoo · 03/04/2019 01:27

Who else thinks that some of the scenes are unscripted?

Such as between FB and Claire when FB tells Claire about HP:

C: I haven’t even asked how you are! How are you?

FB: um, I met someone

C: what? Really?

FB: yeah

Claire: OMG that’s amazing! What does he do?

FB: he’s a priest

Claire:

OMG. You are joking < starts laughing hysterically > you’re a genius. You’re my fucking hero!

If you look at this scene carefully, there’s an element of genuine surprise and spontaneity when Claire laughs and says “you’re my fucking hero” that doesn’t necessarily tie in with the script and is incongruous to the narrative...

Ok. I admit I’m over invested GrinGrinGrin

Oh I didn't see it like that, I thought he said it in disdain but then realised it was actually a compliment, just one of those silly meaningless things that tend to come out in a heated argument. The pause afterwards was funny because they were both like "we er that doesn't make sense". I don't think he's infatuated or we're meant to think that.

ghostpop · 03/04/2019 05:27

And yes I'm pretty sure you can be a successful intelligent feminist and still get upset about a bad haircut,

GertrudeCB · 03/04/2019 06:38

@enjoyingscience if she called me a cunt to my face I’d probably say thank you. has just made me snort my morning coffee up my nose. Grin

Hyacintharehighersincelasttime · 03/04/2019 06:40

Managed to convince DH to watch this, have to start again from series 1.
lucky me. and noticing more stuff, his thought was miranda Shock
well, in that she does looks to camera as well.

i hope pwb doesnt get a massive fall from grace after this, but this tends to happen

Bagpuss5 · 03/04/2019 06:46

Brilliant series. I watched last episode twice it was so good. OC was hilarious and poor Dad.

RuffleCrow · 03/04/2019 06:48

ghostpop I agree. He was trying to sound sarcastic but it came out wrong. So far, so human.

PWB is gorgeous, has great comic timing and is a joy to watch. As is AS. And Sian Clifford who plays Claire. I don't really give a fuck who's posh and who's not - to quote Caitlyn Moran on porn "I just want to see people having a good time!" and they're certainly managing that. (Hopefully by now Claire & Klare have also dtd).

It's a sharp, well-observed, slightly edgy and very sexy tv programme. If i wanted The Female Eunach or The Communist Manifesto I'd go and re-read those instead.

Fazackerley · 03/04/2019 06:56

why does he have to be actually infatuated with FB as well? because that's why he hates her so much

Hyacintharehighersincelasttime · 03/04/2019 07:02

lucky lawyer I think you mean

VicSynix · 03/04/2019 08:28

Everyone may already know this, but Sian Clifford (Claire) is on Twitter and has said - no spoilers - that 'Episode 6 is a beautiful, perfect ending'. She then qualified it with 'didn't say it was happy, just perfect'.

AAAAAARGGGHHH.

Fazackerley · 03/04/2019 08:30

Hopefully we won't see Claire again, she'll stay in Scandiwegia.

Do we know fleabags name? If not I expect the priest will say it

RedForShort · 03/04/2019 08:39

Not sure Martin's infatuated with FB. Isn't he more obsessed with the fact he can't have sex with her, because she doesn't want to. He thinks because she isn't chaste, and has had sex with a variety of men she should have sex with him too.

That attitude of 'she'll have sex with anyone', if a woman is known to have had sex with a few men outside of a long term relationships.

QueenOfTheAndals · 03/04/2019 08:49

Yes, and that old phrase "a slut is a woman who'll sleep with everyone except you" comes to mind.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 03/04/2019 08:54

Scandiwegia

Sounds like Helsinki crossed with Glasgow

groundcontroltomontydon · 03/04/2019 09:10

Why can't he just be a sleaze and an arsehole, why does he have to be actually infatuated with FB as well?
Isn't it a recurring thing between FB and Martin that their attempts to deliver eloquent put downs are always thwarted by crap punchlines (see 'weak-y')?

LassOfFyvie · 03/04/2019 09:12

And yes I'm pretty sure you can be a successful intelligent feminist and still get upset about a bad haircut,

And also so stupid she forgets it is exactly the same as in the magazine she brought in to show the hairdresser?

RuffleCrow · 03/04/2019 09:21

I'm not sure she's meant to be stupid, just distracted by her own existential crisis. How many of us have requested a haircut that looked great in the magazine and completely different/ crap on us? I know I have Blush

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 03/04/2019 09:40

I don't think Martin's infatuated with FB at all. I interpreted the "lucky priest" comment as sarcasm. Sure, he'd happily fuck her if she let him but that's not the same thing as infatuation.
