We all know people that change their hair either after or before a big breakup. I did it more than once when I was younger. And although I change my hair quite a lot these days the last big haircut change was just before I had DD1 so another major life change. So, as PP say the hair is a signal that Claire wants change.

RuffleCrow · 03/04/2019 18:30

On the contrary, Merrymouse, i think exploring the idea of power within relationships is a big part of what she's asking us to consider. I guess we're both entitled to our views.

merrymouse · 03/04/2019 18:42

I'd say it's more about exploring power over ones own actions. However, even accepting that the show explores power in relationships, I don't think that PWB is intending the priest to be seen as abusive at the end of episode 5. FB is very much in control of all the sex in the scene, from the moment you see her standing at the door and including getting rid of the lawyer.

practicalmagick · 03/04/2019 18:43

He didn't come to her flat to explain why they couldn't have sex, he came to tell her that he was going to officiate the wedding after all. He didn't want to just show up the next day without warning her.

Then they got onto talking about sex because it was such an elephant in the room.

Great comment, ThanksItHasPockets, and I agree. It has been a running gag that Fleabag can read Claire's emotional state by what she has done with her appearance. Her drastic haircut indicates that she is reaching crisis point and, as Anthony said, she really needs to change her life.
Also, I don't think she looked ridiculous or was meant to - the humour lay in the reveal after her anguished phonecall to Fleabag, and in her mortified face. As other posters have commented, as soon as Klare complimented her new look, she shone. The whole haircut thing was there to signpost the direction Claire needs to take to be happy.
I just want to add that Sian Clifford is AMAZING in this. I know some real life Claires, and she really nails the personality of someone for whom no amount of achievement, competence and control can ever compensate for feeling like the also-ran sibling. I so want her character to have a happy ending...

Late to the thread but enjoying both the thread and the programme hugely.

Claire’s hair - I think this was portrayed so well. She was totally uncertain about what she’d done, and it didn’t really suit her as she’s got a thin angular (lovely) face. So when she was rear stained and anxious it looked awkward and wrong. But when Klair turned up her face lit up and she felt happier and it looked ok really because she was being validated by someone she likes and who likes her (but doesn’t know her and her inner self like FB as her sister does).

Re the dad and godmother, I thought he was on the verge of saying they could cancel the wedding - just before she slams off into a rage and he’s cut off.

Perhaps the reality behind how fucked up the family is is to do with their mum. We don’t see her, no photos, no flashbacks. Perhaps she was awful, one of those people who everybody else thinks is magnificent and spectacular and the fun one but she could have been a narcissist or an alcoholic or just totally immersed in her art (and better at it than godmother? Or outraged because the godmother clearly is very good and was her student).

Has @HoraceCope been back at all.... What is the etiquette for starting a new thread as this one's about to be full?

RhymingRabbit · 03/04/2019 18:50

I would love Fleabag 3 to look at FB and Claire's mum.

merrymouse · 03/04/2019 18:54

Wouldn't FB have been a bit more familiar with what happens in confession if she had been raised Catholic?

RuffleCrow · 03/04/2019 19:04

That's a good pojnt about the mother Hello. Dad is a classic enabler and is on the verge of marrying a narcissist in the true sense of the word. Maybe the reason he jumped inti bed with her so quickly is that he missed having someone to "tell him what to do" ? Maybe fb and claire had a golden child/ scapegoat thing going on?

foxessocks · 03/04/2019 19:19

Sorry if it has already been suggested but with regards to the c word could it have something to do with the watershed as the priest would have said it right at the start so too close to 9pm? Or is it on later than that anyway?! I only ever watch on catch up.

BeautifulName · 03/04/2019 19:36

Rhyming I had to look up ACEs. Thank you - very interesting. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adverse_Childhood_Experiences_Study

I've only been to confession once, and don't remember/know how it works when you're not on the altar making your first confession, so not necessarily.

Last night was brilliant!
When Olivia Colman was screeching "what a c*nt" after the priest left, new heights of passive aggression
