the RuPaul mantra of 'if you don't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else? Can I get an amen?'' is just as cliche as walking off into the sunset.

Agree.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 02/04/2019 19:52

I'm really happy for another show to explore the negative aspects of priests having sex and for everything to end badly

Thorn Birds?

RuffleCrow · 02/04/2019 20:04

I don't really get that mantra. Humans have evolved to live in small groups, not alone learning to love ourselves until we're released into society. Maybe it's the other way round? We learn to do right by other people and that gives us an insight into who we really are and the good we're capable of? I speak as someone who's alone more than she'd like to be and does a lot of yoga that doesn't really seem to be helping. Grin

howmanyleftfeet · 02/04/2019 20:12

I do think the Priest has something to tell her that he failed to get out before they shagged

Before they were interrupted by hot misogynist at the door, HP was saying "When I was a child..."

There's definitely something he wants to share.

RuffleCrow · 02/04/2019 20:28

Yes, ive been wondering how that sentence ends. I think it will be something that mirrors fbs own dysfunctional background in some way and put him off relationships completely.

ghostpop · 02/04/2019 20:46

Yeah I'm another one who doesn't feel it has to have a point or deeper meaning or message, it's an entertaining story which makes me laugh and brilliantly observed characters etc.

BeautifulName · 02/04/2019 20:48

Agree Ruffle his character comes over like his priestly life as an escape from normal life- all those references to doubting his faith, jokes it’s all about the outfits- rather than positively feeling the calling to be a priest.

Sisterself · 02/04/2019 21:12

'the priest manages to upstage the bride'.... I'm almost too nervous to watch the last episode!

dontloseyourhead · 02/04/2019 21:13

I thought there was more evidence he doubted is calling to be a priest rather than his faith.

merrymouse · 02/04/2019 21:16

Agree Beautiful. He's clearly neither fussy about the denomination of the services he attends nor bothered by FB's atheism, so while I think he is genuinely religious, his choice to specifically become a Catholic priest is about being given a set of rules.

Anyway, the main thing is that he is still in place to officiate at the TV wedding of the year.

BertrandRussell · 02/04/2019 21:18

I just think if tou’re Not going to carry the idea of him being a priest and the complications that entails through the end, why make him a priest in the first place.

Duoscoo · 02/04/2019 21:25

I’m thinking that HP turns out to be the paedophile brother... 🤔

dontloseyourhead · 02/04/2019 21:29

You think hp would confes that at a wedding? My money is on him being abused by the brother, and he and his parents all turning to drink to cope, and for him, perhaps earlier relationships with women where he used them.

It would be some twist otherwise!

merrymouse · 02/04/2019 21:33

"why make him a priest in the first place."

1). Humour & setting - all the Catholic Church/Sin/Eroticism tropes are acknowledged and broadcast very clearly throughout the show - when FB sees the counsellor, the music, the pictures of Jesus, "fuck you calling me father like it doesn't turn you on just to say it".

  1. To explore themes of free will, sin and redemption.

I'm not saying that there are no complications - just that I don't require the show to condemn their relationship because of the complications.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 02/04/2019 21:34

I thought that too @Duoscoo

But we are wrong, we have to be

LassOfFyvie · 02/04/2019 21:38

I really dislike series 2. The first episode was brilliant. It reminded me of the genius of Inside Number 9- compressing a 3 act play into 30 minutes.

The Kristin Scott-Thomas "women's pain" episode was tripe. The seducing the hot priest stuff is unoriginal guff.

And what is feminist about making her successful sister into a hysterical idiot who can't even remember what haircut she asked for it?

Each episode has been worse than the previous.

Pengrin · 02/04/2019 21:42

Agree

This makes no sense

RuffleCrow · 02/04/2019 22:03

Paedophiles don't tend to go batshit for a 33 year old woman (unless she has kids).

BagpussAteMyHomework · 02/04/2019 22:12

Just watched the most recent and am composing myself.

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 02/04/2019 22:21

He's so hot.
He's a priest because that is central to the twists and turns of the plot.
He is so fucking hot.

RuffleCrow · 02/04/2019 22:29

He is :-)

As a bisexual woman i can appreciate both hp and fb and also the two together. Win win win for me Smile

I actually had to go and lie down because of all the hotness earlier Blush. I couldn't get anything done. Way too invested in this.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 02/04/2019 22:51

The paedophile line was used as the beeb didn't want the priest character saying the word cunt.
A denouement whereby FB realizes she is happy on her own and doesn't need someone to validate her would be just as trite as marrying Hot Priest - not sure what you don't understand pengrin - both are used in romcom and chicklit, often following each other.

IamPickleRick · 02/04/2019 22:59

the TV wedding of the year

Grin
Superchill · 02/04/2019 23:40

How come HP wasn't allowed to say cunt, and said paedophile instead, in ep 1, but OC could shout CUNT in ep 5?

KittyWindbag · 02/04/2019 23:42

Why is it not feminist to make her sister hysterical over her haircut? Do feminists never feel trapped in miserable marriages. The whole point of that scene was in what Anthony said ‘if you want to change your life then change your life.’ Not all women, no matter if they consider themselves card-carrying feminists make correct, sensible decisions all the time. Clare’s a human being. Personally I think PWB is more interested in people getting things wrong than conveying messages of how to be perfect feminists.
