Fucking marvelous ( literally)

RedForShort · 02/04/2019 08:42

Loved it. Evil husband deleted the recording after we watched. (Not in uk so no iplayer. ) He's away the next few days so I could have re-watched.

My favourite line is either 'I look like a pencil.' Or ' FUCK YOU. I KNOW!''.

Mind you I'm still getting the occasional giggle out of Henry's trousers last week.

Why did evil husband delete them!! (I'll change the locks.) Would love to watch series 1 again too.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 02/04/2019 08:45

The hair reveal of what she had asked for originally was just perfect.
The number of times I have done that.
A boy at school once called me Madame Mussollini for a week following a rather radical hair botch.
Not forgetting the farrah fawcett perm.
And trying to emulate the blonde quiffed l'oreal woman
Aw Claire. We've all been there.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 02/04/2019 08:52

Hi red
Amazon prime gives you series 1 and they get series 2 in May (in Europe anyway)
Alternatively if you join Film On today for a month (15 euros standard per month and you can cancel it anytime) then you can go to LIVE TV- bbc one tv guide - and click on record show. They will still have yesterday's and today's stuff on there now to record but it won't be there very much later than that as today becomes yesterday iyswim. It is then found on your menu My Recordings for the next 30 days. I might have watched it twice already

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 02/04/2019 08:55

Unless of course you recorded it from filmon in the first place. In which case you can still rerecord it retroactively.
I discovered this last week when a show I love (Speechless) had been and gone. But it still let me record and watch it straight away - no idea how it works, they must have everything backed up somehow for 48 hours at a time.

RuffleCrow · 02/04/2019 09:01

I feel a bit sorry for Jake actually. When Clare goes off to Finland with Klare (and I hope she does) he's going to be left all alone with his awful dad. I know Jake already has creepiness in spades but he's at a point in his life where the right support and guidance could still redeem him. Maybe that's what PWB was going for? It's one of those shows that just packs so much subtext into every scene which, in that great British tradition, is what makes up for there only being 12 episodes.

Goatrider · 02/04/2019 09:12

I think I must be the only one who is disappointed that they had sex. I wanted them to be friends.

My favourite bits were Olivia Coleman swearing at the priest after he left and the moment when Clare's emergency was revealed. The whole Clare thing was utterly brilliant.

BertrandRussell · 02/04/2019 09:12

“I know Jake already has creepiness in spades”

Really? Isn’t he just a sad teenager caught in awful cross currents?’

RuffleCrow · 02/04/2019 09:16

Well, most children of his age wouldn't be watching their stepmother take a bath!

And then there's the inappropiate hugging. I'm sure he is sad and he's had a rough time but i think his dad's influence is already there.

redpickle · 02/04/2019 09:17

I'm concerned that the nasty bastard Martin is going to fuck it all up for her somehow!

I was also thinking about the scene when he asks her if she's nostalgic and the stuff about Piglet last week - I found that really endearing but it was seemingly random and we all know that nothing is really random in FB.

It's brilliant - just brilliant. So much packed in to those 25 mins.

By the way, for those wondering hamsters and guinea pigs can't really live together no matter how sweet it is for them to share the cucumber! The guinea pig would most likely come off worse. So probably not a happy ending in store for Hilary and Stephanie Smile

Hyacintharehighersincelasttime · 02/04/2019 09:20

i wonder if the guinea pig hamster analogy is relevant

Tootrousers · 02/04/2019 09:21

Agh I hope Hilary and Stephanie aren’t supposed to echo FB and HP then!

BertrandRussell · 02/04/2019 09:21

“I think I must be the only one who is disappointed that they had sex. I wanted them to be friends”

Me too. I thought las night was a massive, massive disappointment. And a cop out. And the sex has got boring- fuck off with your chemistry and super-soft porn and get back to proper writing and subtly.

And the hair thing was practically Miranda-ish in its “ Isn:it funny when women are made to look grotesque” vibe.

BeautifulName · 02/04/2019 09:25

Would be great if Martin will leave and Jake gets brought up by the two Cklares.

I really enjoyed in ep 5 the bonding of the sisters. Clare’s character is moving beyond uptight and ridiculous and FB also moving beyond the self centred, self destructive cool girl. it’s FB who righteously marches in and goes nuts at the hairdressers on her sisters’ behalf.

I loved it when the stepmum has her rage and runs off to paint and dad gets rid of the daughters (as he’s been instructed) and then stands there forlornly with the ludicrous wedding flowers.

Argh..The comedy is so good it’s painful!

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 02/04/2019 09:32

I didn't take that from that at all. It was the juxtaposition of you thinking from the call Major Crisis and it being Bad Hair Cut. Which for me, as I have had several, is a First World Problem but the hair monologue speaks to those for whom it would be a big deal...to cap that off with her having chosen the goddamn style (which looked good on the original model) was a decent reveal/well-timed. Because it is relatable. Because many of us at some point have brandished that small bit of paper, hoping the hairdresser is a miracle worker who will make us look like Sheena Easton I was young, what can I say
I still love the first episode of Miranda - why are you dressed like a transvestite - she did the clowning and pratfalls and silly humour well, wrote the material herself and had a strong female friendship in it. There was too much mooning over Gary, sure, and Tom Ellis is so much better in Lucifer but it had its charm and I don't begrudge any female writer doing well.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 02/04/2019 09:34

Sorry, above post was wrt to the ''Isn't it funny when women are made to look grotesque” vibe.

RosemaryTelephoneOperator · 02/04/2019 09:37

So funny when Claire was on the phone and said "no don't bring Hillary! Who's Stephanie?.."

RuffleCrow · 02/04/2019 09:40

I think FB has been subverting Miranda-isms since episode 1. That's what the 4th wall is all about.

ThanksItHasPockets · 02/04/2019 09:43

No, I don’t think it was. It was lovely use of bathos to evoke humour and empathy and provide the means for a reconciliation between the sisters.

GottaGetUp · 02/04/2019 09:43

I thought the hair stuff was worth it for ‘if you want to change your life, change your life. It can’t happen in here.’ Though her speech about how hair is everything didn’t really resonate with me.

GottaGetUp · 02/04/2019 09:46

Yes, it was good to see FB say the right thing (it’s French! 😄) to cheer Claire up.

ThanksItHasPockets · 02/04/2019 09:47

Agreed. Claire couldn’t talk to FB about her miscarriage, or the breakdown of her marriage, but she could talk about her hair and that was their way in. I think it is very common to project all sorts of serious anxieties onto something seemingly superficial and I found that very truthful.

cheezy · 02/04/2019 09:51

I was disappointed that they had sex. Yes yes it was hot, but predictable. I thought PWB would take it in a more unexpected direction.

makingtime · 02/04/2019 10:02

I think we shouldn't underestimate her - if last night's episode had been the final episode I'd say the same. But it wasn't and I suspect next week will have everything turned on its head and we'll all be looking like this: Shock

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 02/04/2019 10:04

I felt the same cheezy.
