And with Andrew Scott,
he is great
as is Olivia Colman

*stage door, not backstage

not that lucky!

mazylou · 28/03/2019 15:24

Hypothetically, who would play Fleabag's mother if that role existed?

diddl · 28/03/2019 15:27

"I don't find Andrew Scott attractive in the slightest. "

Me neither-also find him irritating in this-as in Sherlock.
(In fact I can't see much difference!)

RhymingRabbit · 28/03/2019 15:38

Oooh good question @mazylou.
Emma Thompson? Helena Bonham Carter?

Connieston · 28/03/2019 15:46

Ohhh Fantasy casting! Helena Bonham Carter defo! Emma Thompson would be too sensible. Claire is probably uptight and touchy because of a critical mother and HBC can be waspish and it was said Fleabag and her share the same sense of humour aka "the fun gene", and they seem similarly louche and irreverant. It would explain why the dad had mixed feelings about his wife.

They both loved their mum but it doesn't mean it was an easy relationship - I agree that given the spiky dynamics it was probably far from easy.

fruitbastille · 28/03/2019 15:51

Bertrand I think in the same way you (I think) said you’re not supposed to like FB, I think you’re not supposed to think something happening between her and the priest would be a good thing, he is clearly way more fucked up than she is, and she should definitely run a mile. But it can still be hot to watch the attraction build between them.

Yes this! It's sexy! They're both attractive charismatic people.

mazylou · 28/03/2019 16:00

Good call on HBC.

The80sweregreat · 28/03/2019 16:01

Fleabag ( how i hate this name though, it doesnt suit her) and Helena Bonham carter do look a bit alike , so i could see that pairing.
I thought that mum died when they were young children, so the flashback did throw me. Her dad said that future step mum was ' annoying' so its goes to show how easily men's heads are turned by a smile and some attention. in real life as well. He seems so sensible as well!
I do like Fleabag's stripey black and white top - but i would need the big size.

RhymingRabbit · 28/03/2019 16:02

Plus the step mum is a bit of a HBC wannabe without the wit so it would make sense that she was Dad's easy replacement.

merrymouse · 28/03/2019 16:03

I think you’re not supposed to think something happening between her and the priest would be a good thing

Yes - I don't think FB is supposed to be a role model, and regardless of whether she needs to come to terms with the death of her mother/best friend/childhood, I don't want her to have a complete personality transplant and suddenly start behaving sensibly. It's not as though acting like a grown up has been good for her sister and it is after all a comedy.

itssquidstella · 28/03/2019 16:12

For what it's worth, I thought the ending of episode 4 ("kneel" and what followed) was possibly the most erotic thing I've ever seen.

The80sweregreat · 28/03/2019 16:14

She had her life together in episode one ( series two) though - personal trainers. eating healthily, not having sex with unsuitable men, the cafe is doing okay etc etc. Then he comes along..
her ex was funny with the baby though - he always plays characters like that.

merrymouse · 28/03/2019 16:22

But also, define 'good thing'. KST advises FB to go out and enjoy people. If HP and FB have sex but don't ultimately settle down together, is that a bad thing? (Leaving aside whether he can remain a priest if he breaks one of his vows).

GottaGetUp · 28/03/2019 17:02

I think a ‘good thing’ would be, at the minimum, angst free, which this relationship definitely is not.

I noticed that the dad calls the step-mum annoying shortly after FB has called the priest annoying for questioning her...

SoHotADragonRetired · 28/03/2019 17:04

KST advises FB to go out and enjoy people.

Was that good advice for Fleabag, though? Belinda's advice was generally wise and kind, and Belinda herself is clearly quite sorted, but if we know anything about Fleabag it's that she has no trouble flirting and fucking people, she has trouble building healthy connections, and HotPriest is basically more hot-mess stuff for her. I hope Belinda recurs so we can see some more, just as Hugh did.

RuffleCrow · 28/03/2019 17:39

itssquidstella agreed!

Just goes to show this whole thing about actors only portraying their own sexualities is pomo rubbish.

Also backs up the Joey Tribbiani theory about onscreen/ offscreen chemistry.

Then again AS has said in interviews that he and PWB do have chemistry in rl - although presumably platonic. Just thinking back to some of the male gay friends i've had 'chemistry' with over the years.. i guess that spark is sometimes hard to explain and not always sexual

merrymouse · 28/03/2019 18:04

Just goes to show this whole thing about actors only portraying their own sexualities is pomo rubbish.

To be fair I think the point is more that gay actors (e.g. Rupert Everett) get stuck in niche gay best friend roles while heterosexual actors get Oscars for playing gay people.

However, Andrew Scott has definitely blown those stereotypes out of the water by demonstrating that actors...act.

RuffleCrow · 28/03/2019 18:15

I get that but as so few actors are out anyway it becomes a bit academic. I.e is Bradley Cooper breaking the mould by playing the straight lead in such a financially lucrative role, or is he just another straight actor playing a straight role? Who knows, other than psychic people?!

CountFosco · 28/03/2019 18:22

Another one here who doesn't fancy Andrew Scott. Too much forehead and big hair.

Agree no flashback to the Mum likely (HBC is too young I think, although so is Olivia Colman, I'm between OC and HBC and Bill Paterson is my Mum's age) although I do think the constant Boo flashbacks and the lack of a flashback to her Mum is telling us something. What I don't know yet.

And Carolyn Martens as the therapist

The therapist was Fiona Shaw. PWB really has got a stellar cast hasn't she!

SoHotADragonRetired · 28/03/2019 18:28

I was using the actress's character name in PWB's other show Killing Eve, count, since I didn't know her name off the top of my head (and also it's amusing to imagine a superspy with a sideline as a therapist).

Connieston · 28/03/2019 18:32

Ohhhh yes maybe the lack of mum flashbacks are relevant. Although in fairness it's only ever Boo she's seeing in the flashbacks so plenty of other people are omitted.

I've never known a TV show in such a short space of time throw up so many theories!

CountFosco · 28/03/2019 18:34

Ah, I've not watched it Blush. Argree, like the idea of a therapist secret spy. Common skills to be sure!

mizu · 28/03/2019 18:45

Another one who hopes PWB is reading this thread and grinning GrinGrinGrin

CountFosco · 28/03/2019 19:11

Maybe we should ask MNHQ to invite her for a web chat. I bet PWB could say what a woman was Grin

merrymouse · 28/03/2019 19:16

I think a ‘good thing’ would be, at the minimum, angst free

I agree in real life, but it would be boring to watch.
