Love Boo, lovely blue eyes, such a great face

Dontloseyourhead · 28/03/2019 08:17

I agree there are very few romances where the heroine falls madly in love with a thoroughly nice, safe guy who always acts rationally and does his share of the wife work!

The average age of European catholic priests is about 60 isn’t it? Just like Tory party membership.

rufflecrow interesting theory - must when I thought this couldn’t get more complex!

CurlsandCurves · 28/03/2019 08:51

Is anyone else hoping PWB has found this thread?

I want her to see all the amazing ideas and debate her show is creating, it’s the best thread I’ve participated in on MN in a long time!

Hi PWB if you’re secretly, silently watching us!

RuffleCrow · 28/03/2019 09:11

Bertrand - i get where you're coming from it's just that dependable and safe only feels that way if that's the kind of upbringing you've had. For us FBs of the world, danger and conflict feel familiar and 'safe'. Until we have a LOT of therapy!

RuffleCrow · 28/03/2019 09:27

Dontlose- just a theory but in my view Boo has almost taken on the quality of Sainthood (another catholic theme) in FB's mind and i think there might be more to it than she's letting on. In season 1 i was completely convinced it had been the best kind of platonic female friendship (until FB fucked it up completely), but season 2 has continually planted tiny seeds of doubt in my mind. When is life (or the show) ever that black and white?

Connieston · 28/03/2019 09:40

I do think Boo has taken on a new role. When she shook her head at FB in the cafe it seemed to be in the present, not a flashback. I don't think that has happened before.

SoHotADragonRetired · 28/03/2019 09:45

I'm late to the party but how good is S2!? Just caught up.

God but Kristen Scott-Thomas was insanely good. I loved her grabbing Fleabag's face and telling her with such wisdom and intensity that people are all we have, I loved her description of being postmenopausal and telling FB she wasn't interested in sleeping with her even more. And Carolyn Martens as the therapist, I thought PWB did a brilliant job of milking some comedy from the therapist-and-client stock scenario while still making Carolyn a good therapist who had some uncomfortably true comments for FB. And the first episode engagement dinner was positively brilliantly pitched - FB's 'I had a little... miscarriage' move was so very her - on some level attention-seeking and wildly inappropriate, yet helpful and genuinely stemming from her love and concern for Claire.

I'm concerned about the priest development. I know PWB is much too smart to have this turn out well and I suppose they had to go there at least once, inevitably, but I really hope this is going to be handled well.

RuffleCrow · 28/03/2019 10:10

I completely agree about the KST scene, redhot. It's such a bittersweet realisation - that the sources of intense pain and joy in life are basically the same = the people we love. SadSmile

SoHotADragonRetired · 28/03/2019 10:14

KST's scene felt so authentic to the experience of an older woman as well. I wondered if PWB had some writing support from someone else there. Did it ring true for those of you watching who are in that age bracket?

Connieston · 28/03/2019 10:24

Good writers can put themselves into other people's heads, it's what makes them good writers!

SoHotADragonRetired · 28/03/2019 10:27

Well, yes, Connieston, I know, but that felt very specific to the experience of being a postmenopausal woman and well beyond being preoccupied with your fuckability in the way FB is, and as PWB is, you know, the same age as FB I was just interested to know how well she had done there and how directly she had tapped into other women's experiences.

Sitdownstandup · 28/03/2019 10:54

Fleabag talks about having used sex to fill the gaping chasm, or something like that, for all her adult life. I guess that doesnt necessarily mean the sex is all dysfunctional in itself, but the general overarching reason for it usually is. She says to the therapist she never wants sex with the right person.

Tootrousers · 28/03/2019 11:02

Sitdown yes she does say that. I thought that there was something in this series and last which indicates this is not a new thing since her mother died and that’s it

RosaWaiting · 28/03/2019 11:11

mizu that's what I thought - I was massively relieved when it turned out not to be that!

as for finding the priest hot, it's not because of his behaviour, it's because Andrew Scott, surely?!

GarthFunkel · 28/03/2019 11:16

I thought in the scene in the bedroom after the funeral that Fleabag's dad was telling her that he didn't like her very much, that he didn't like that side of her mother either. He's certainly not shown any affection towards her, just exasperation.

Sitdownstandup · 28/03/2019 11:22

Yeah I think Andrew Scott playing anyone is going to be attractive unless he's got a bag on his head, because Andrew Scott is extremely physically attractive.

That's an interesting point about her dad. I wonder if the godmother is supposed to have sort of taken advantage of him in his grief too. He doesnt like her at the funeral and never seems to show her much real affection.

SoHotADragonRetired · 28/03/2019 11:26

I think the relationship between the dad and his daughters is interesting and real because he does seem to love them and isn't in any stereotypical way a 'bad' man, but he's a bad father because he's weak, poor at emotional stuff and can't be alone.

Connieston · 28/03/2019 12:13

I saw on twitter someone said that Andrew Scott looks like Ant and Dec at the same time Grin He is a dish though.

The characters are so realistic - with the exception of the godmother who's pure malevolence, they have both good and bad sides. I love spiky Clare - so insanely touchy with FB (you get the feeling she's always been the ignored sister) but coquettish and almost playful with the lawyer and Klare from Finland - which suggested flings left right and centre.

The dad is crap, but the instant replacement of his wife shows his panic and loneliness, but the stuttering worsening since hes been with the Godmother shows he's losing his confidence, slow wearing down...

I so hope we get a flashback of FB's mum. It will make lots of things make sense I expect.

RuffleCrow · 28/03/2019 12:37

I agree - FB's mum is like the missing piece of the jigsaw.

The godmother is evil in a very subtle way - she's all smiles and butter wouldn't melt on the surface - never loses her cool.

I can imagine how someone like her in rl would be constantly excused as 'eccentric' or misunderstood because look how helpful she was with the sausage rolls! And how she's "always there" for those poor bereaved girls Hmm

Tootrousers · 28/03/2019 12:57

Yes it’s interesting that there’s never been a flash back of the mum. I predict there will be one

SoHotADragonRetired · 28/03/2019 13:08

I think hints have been dropped that FB and Claire's mum was no picnic herself, and that the family issues go back to long before her death. A sibling relationship that's as fucked as theirs goes all the way back to the beginning.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 28/03/2019 13:44

Just joining the conversation. LOVE Fleabag.

It's mesmerising to watch FB and the Priest inexorably drawn to each other. He dropped so many hints that he's tempted but he can't quite tell her to stay away and she can't quite leave him alone.

I don't think he planned to kiss her. I think he wanted her to submit to God, which worked for him when he was in despair. But he was drunk and, well.... the result was kind of inevitable (and hot!).

I think they both bear the burden of their family's fucked up relationships. I also wonder if there are more revelations to come re. Boo.

GottaGetUp · 28/03/2019 13:49

Bertrand I think in the same way you (I think) said you’re not supposed to like FB, I think you’re not supposed to think something happening between her and the priest would be a good thing, he is clearly way more fucked up than she is, and she should definitely run a mile. But it can still be hot to watch the attraction build between them.

RedForShort · 28/03/2019 15:11

I don't find Andrew Scott attractive in the slightest. Starting to wonder if that means I'm missing some hormone everyone else has!!

RosaWaiting · 28/03/2019 15:21

I predict no flashback of mum.

Red I met him while with a friend. She had no idea what I was on about either till she saw him on stage, and now she's fully understanding of it! I didn't want to do the backstage selfie thing Blush but she was all "oh we HAVE to do it, the man is a FORCE".

She only went to Hamlet because it was Hamlet. I only went because I wanted to see him onstage again after seeing Birdland and The Dazzle. I almost didn't go because I wasn't keen on Hamlet but the whole production was fab, not just him.

okay I've waffled on enough about him haven't I!
