Can you believe we are on thread 50! This is for all discussions on the BBC series Our Girl and any possible future series. Reference to Captain James is particularly welcome.

On Youtube . I remember watching on maternity ward night son was born. He’s 15 now Confused

Magi84 · 25/01/2019 21:18

Great thanks. Never thought of You Tube duh ...

Rhubarb01 · 25/01/2019 23:18

I watched Red Caps on You Tube a few years ago Bonnie. It was good. It starred Tamzin Outhwaite. Shame it only ran to two series. It was a bit different to Nancy's version of MP's though. I liked the way the officer was really quite junior to all the NCOs in terms of his experience. As they were effectively detectives it was a very different take on a cop drama.

Evening all. I've been away for a couple of days and need to catch up with what's been happening on here.

eejit - sorry you can't join the IloveRhu watchalong on Thursday. I did wonder whether to suggest postponing it but in all honesty, it's not a great episode and you won't be missing much.

Came home tonight to find my series 3 DVD has arrived and have now watched the first two episodes. It's addictive! They're in New Zealand this time. Some very interesting scenarios so far, including women on the front line and career progression for women.

I had totally forgotten about Tamzin Outhwaite and Red Cap. She was pretty good in most things she was in (can't comment on East Enders though as I never watch it). I certainly enjoyed it at the time.

I'm going to bed shortly and finishing off Miss Piony's Christmas fanfic. It's been lovely - gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling!

I have just finished series 3 of Soldier Soldier. I never thought it would be quite so addictive. In fact, I think it's the best series so far. Magi where are you up to? I think I have a way to go to catch you up.

You are so right ILove it is very addictive. I have to confess I have now seen all 7 series. I did find that with latter series things gradually changed. I don't just mean the actors, because of course they changed repeatedly over the six or seven years of the series, but the style of the stories. Never got to the stage of being such major character assassinations as we suffered with CJ in OG though!! Just now and again I felt things were a wee bit unbelievable. Really enjoyed it all though. Lots of proper army input too.

I took the trouble to count up how many episodes it meant I had watched - 82😡

Really can't believe it. Can't say a word to my grandson now about how much time he spends on his IPad! I do feel a little lost now it is finished. They did tie up the ends nicely and none of this leaving you in limbo wondering what was happening to them all.

Ilovelblue · 30/01/2019 23:17

I think I am going to have to buy series 4 on DVD. I clearly have some way to go to catch you up.

The last episode of series 3 was quite moving - when the regiment was preparing to go out to Bosnia on UN duties. There was so little thought given to the wives and girlfriends left behind and when one of the wives asked for an officer (who was returning from UN duty and was talking to the soldiers to tell them what to expect) to talk to the women too, it was at first met with an almost refusal. I was near to tears by the end.

Yes ILove I did find that they stuck pretty true to how the army conducted itself at that time. Then you gradually see changes in all sorts of ways. That's why I felt it had real army input as it showed how regulations were strictly adhered to, and then a somewhat softer approach began, especially towards the women. It also gave an insight into how different officers took longer to come to terms with such changes. The end series was around 1998 and you could by that time glean an impression of how things were progressing for the female soldiers.

Now of course there have been more and more changes and only last year they decided women can be in combat situations alongside their colleagues, although
still not at the stage where a corporal medic runs the outfit!!

eejittwo · 31/01/2019 18:26

Although I won't be joining you at 9 pm, I'll catch up with your comments later - and let you know if I disagree Smile

Rhubarb01 · 31/01/2019 20:55

Evening. I will be on parade at 9pm.

ilove and Magi, I have to agree with all your comments on Soldier Soldier. I watched most of the series a year or two back and I do really like series 2 and 3, probably more than the first one, but everything has to start somewhere. Just catching the last few minutes of EastEnders (I don't usually watch it) and I see that Tamzin Outhwaite is on it - thinking back to 'Red Caps'.

Did anyone see the BBC article about the top ten requested series on iPlayer last year? It seems Our Girl came in at number 8 on the list, so you can see that, despite our issues with it, it's definitely been one of their success stories of last year. I suppose, in that light, it's not that surprising it was given another series.

Rhubarb01 · 31/01/2019 21:00

So here we are for the ilove Rhubarb watchalong of 'Fighting Spirit'. I shall try not to yawn through all the copious boxing bits!

Starting....now!

Ilovelblue · 31/01/2019 21:00

OK, here goes.

Rhubarb01 · 31/01/2019 21:01

Boxing alert and skipping!

Ilovelblue · 31/01/2019 21:01

I have to say that of the numerous episodes I have now binge watched, this is most definitely my least favourite.

OP posts:
Rhubarb01 · 31/01/2019 21:01

Does the army still go in for boxing?

Rhubarb01 · 31/01/2019 21:03

I see the sergeant major is a man of many talents.

This supermarket looks a bit dated. I hope Joy has got a large freezer, I can never find more than a small postage stamp area free in mine when I bring the shopping home.

Rhubarb01 · 31/01/2019 21:04

Look at those flowery shorts? REALLY?

Ilovelblue · 31/01/2019 21:04

I imagine so Rhu. They are pretty much into sports I think.

OP posts:
Ilovelblue · 31/01/2019 21:05

Oh, I had forgotten about the delightful Lt Pascoe. He doesn't appear in any other series after this one.

Rhubarb01 · 31/01/2019 21:06

If I remember rightly, from our googling of army uniform a few years back, the army now uses different shades of green camo from that in use in the early 1990's.

Look, there are some more powerfully built men!

Ilovelblue · 31/01/2019 21:06

Not sure of the guy in the bright blue underpants!

Wow - suggesting Sgt Wilton abandons his wife and son just so that he can train more for the boxing.

Meanwhile, back at the officer's home. Nick doesn't look impressed with Juliet's sniggering.

Laura sounds a bit sarcastic again. I reckon Juliet and Laura could have a big hair fight.

Ilovelblue · 31/01/2019 21:07

Yes, I think it's a slightly paler green now isn't it?

Mrs Cadman and Juliet are sporting great hairstyles again.
