Hmm - but someone from India, the former British colony and now Commonwealth country is okay - was what I was thinking. I do wonder if they just think they can't have a French person win the GBBO.

3luckystars · 17/10/2018 17:11

I miss Mary.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 17/10/2018 17:14

I think Manon made a bad judgement when she decided to make "plain Danish pastries cos I like them plain"
Danish pastries are never plain, they are always filled or iced, that's what makes them Not-croissants!

Goingonandonandon · 17/10/2018 17:18

absolutely, but anyone can make that error of judgement (or overbake, or under bake etc) which ever nationality they are from. I think it's just because the French have fab baked goods and Pru wanted to feel pleasure in pointing mistakes whilst highlighting the person's nationality...

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 17/10/2018 18:04

I miss Mary

I’ll be honest, I don’t.

Love her work and all that, but I like Prue. I respect her knowledge and expertise, I think she’s an excellent judge. I like her style too, didn’t care for the false eyelashes, nails and backcombing that we saw on Mary (who was quite pretty enough without them imho).

I like the reboot, although I could do without some of the scripted nonsense between Sandi and Noel. They are both funny, witty people. They could probably cope without it.

Nice piece here about Briony. I will admit to liking her from Week 1 but she's really come into her own the last couple of weeks.

www.pretty52.com/entertaining/tv-and-film-great-british-bake-offs-briony-reveals-what-happened-to-her-hand-20181017.amp.html

Rahul should've gone home and I'm cross he didn't!

Volant · 17/10/2018 18:54

I was thinking that the technical challenge was unfair to Briony, given that bit where they had to faff around turning the little dough things 90 degrees with little sticks, which looks difficult enough to do with two hands. But then she won it anyway, so all the more kudos to her.

wowfudge · 17/10/2018 19:34

I think like lots of people who have never known anything different, she finds a way. She was certainly very dextrous turning those pancakes with two skewers.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/10/2018 19:34

I didn't like Bryony at first SanFran, but the past 3-4 weeks she has really grown on me and now I love her!

I've always liked Kim-Joy, and have always thought that Rahul was a pain in the arse.

Piggywaspushed · 17/10/2018 19:41

I am rewatching as DS is on catch up. Just got to the bit where Paul tells Manon off for not using French butter! Confused

StripySocksAndDocs · 17/10/2018 20:05

Paul was in a right grump wasn't he.So much so Manon had to try beinv notable flirty with him at one point. That didn't even work!! Right mardy arse.

iklboo · 17/10/2018 20:54

Paul had a face like a slapped arse and a tan like Ross from Friends last night.

PrincessOnTheInternet · 17/10/2018 20:57

Rahul is really irritating me - I enjoy his bakes, initially thought he’d win (he was my favourite; I definitely think they’re planning on having him win) and I still believe he’s talented enough to win but it’s the ‘woe is me’ act that’s starting to wear very thin Confused so if he did win I’d feel a bit irritated!

That episode really was brutal - so many tears! I really feel as though ch4 have sensationalised GBBO. Even if it isn’t markedly different to what it was on BBC1 there’s a definite slant to the drama I think?

Don’t feel Manon should have gone but that’s just because I would have rather said goodbye to Rahul. Blush Also agree with whoever who said ruby was acting as if she was on her own tv show - yes. I’ve warmed up to her now, think she’s a bit less moody, but what was the but at the end all about? Bit theatrical. It’s like they’re setting her up for a spin off tv show or something too

3luckystars · 17/10/2018 21:01

Well I love Briony now, what a difference a Dane makes.

(See what I did there)

I saw ECLAIRS in the background for next week. Woooooooooooo! My absolute, number one favourite thing ever and I can't wait!! Real backing, back to business.

Woohoo!

CrispbuttyNo1 · 17/10/2018 21:14

Up until last night, I honestly hadn’t even noticed brionys hand.

ppeatfruit · 18/10/2018 08:20

I just watched the strange little apple filled doughnuts and pastry people! I finally like Rahul Shock he swore!!!!!!! he seemed human after that!!!!

What is strange is that if the contestants KNEW they were going to make Danish pastry type cakes why didn't they all practice at home? Poor Kim Joy didn't seem to know HOW to make bake them neither did Rahul.' They ain't easy and with all that butter I'm not going to eat them again Grin Though I love marzipan Grin

I like Briony a lot.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/10/2018 09:46

I spent ages watching the apple doughnuts on YouTube.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 18/10/2018 13:20

Crisp - I hadn't noticed either until last week, I think it was, when I read a post referring to it, and then checked the recording.

Jitters22 · 18/10/2018 13:39

Rahul had an absolute disaster and it all seemed to be about him being unable to control the temperature. Everything was burned to a crisp, oven too high, and when he was making those apple pancake ball things he kept putting the batter in even though they were clearly burning. He just kept whinging and poking and prodding them around and carried on.

Instead of taking the pan off the heat and letting it cool down, then turning down the burner and starting again, which was the obvious thing to do. It was most odd, that he seemed incapable of dealing with any of it. It was like he was a completely different person?!

Every round was an absolute disaster for him and if I'm honest, I thought he should have gone based on those three tasks, and not Manon. Clearly they took into account all his previous brilliance.

choccyp1g · 18/10/2018 13:47

I was sure Rahul was leaving after the first two rounds.

He then was at best second worst in the last round.
I think they didn't want it to be all women in the semis.
I was so shocked that I watched the whole thing again, with sub-titles, to see if there was something I'd missed.

PollyFlinderz · 18/10/2018 15:10

Anyone else thought that Pru’s comment at the end that ‘Manon was a really good French baker but she is just not a very good Danish one’ with a smug smile was all a bit bitter, and a bit I have a chip on my shoulder? I bet she’d been practicing that line thinking it was very clever but it came out as so patronising. Hate the woman. Pru that is, not Manon.

I think your hatred of Pru perhaps clouded your vision a bit with regards to that comment.

PollyFlinderz · 18/10/2018 15:11

.It was like he was a completely different person?!

I think it was a terrible round for all of them and a clear indication they’re quite good at what they know but nothing else really.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 18/10/2018 17:09

I had to rewind and double take Pru’s line to Briony during the judging of the open sandwich round. I thought she said “You’ve ruined another challenge” Shock. It took two replays to get that she said, “You’re IN another challenge”.

ppeatfruit · 18/10/2018 20:11

Jitters Some of them seem unable to turn their ovens down! Maybe it's nerves or the heat is affecting their brains!

I think that the reason that Manon went and not Rahul was that the judges MUST have looked at the previous bakes. Manon's have not been very good whereas Rahul's have sometimes been outstanding.

As I said they could have practiced and it does seem strange to cook French style when it's meant to be Danish!!

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 18/10/2018 20:32

I agree. He had an absolute mare of a week but if you look at their performances over the competition as a whole he's clearly the better baker. Plus Manon probably annoyed the judges by basically ignoring the brief they were given, this does seem to be something that really winds Paul going by past series.
