Big question is......who would you want to get shitfaced with? Apart from Noel

Sandi too. Jon. Terry would be a giggle, I think. Briony is up for a laugh.

That's it really. And I still think Dan was being a bitch!

PollyFlinderz · 20/09/2018 11:36

*I spotted her hand in the first episode, but DH hadn't noticed at all until I mentioned it to him

I hadn't noticed either.

PollyFlinderz · 20/09/2018 11:37

And I still think Dan was being a bitch!

I think it all comes very naturally to him. He's not a nice person.

I'm on holiday in Croatia. There is blancmange every day at the dinner buffet - I love it.

grumiosmum · 20/09/2018 13:37

I thought the chocolate spheres were wankery of the highest order.

I liked GBBO much better when they made things you had half a chance of replicating at home.

And can someone explain to me the difference between a blancmange and a mousse? Because I'd have called that a mousse.

glamorousgrandmother · 20/09/2018 13:50

Blancmange is, basically, a solid custard. I haven't seen this episode yet so I can't comment on what they made.

steppemum · 20/09/2018 14:01

blancmange has a setting agent in this case gelatine.
mousse relies on fluffy egg whites I think?

(which, as I have never made either form scratch is pure guess work)

love love love a good blancmange.
Can't bear Angel Delight, tastes of fluffy chemicals.

Ruby and Briony should both have gone. Karen saved herself at the last minute.
Can't bear Kim-Joy, but her turtles were awesome, we all gasped as the shell collapsed. Brilliant

Taffeta · 20/09/2018 14:40

I liked GBBO much better when they made things you had half a chance of replicating at home.

Totally agree. The showstopper was ridiculous - just like Bake Off Professionals with jaconde sponges and opera cakes inside complex chocolate work.

Pfft

I want historical pies, loaf cakes and tarts. [folds arms]

wowfudge · 20/09/2018 15:07

Mousse has whipped cream in it and a setting agent. Blancmange is a set custard - often cornflour is the setting agent - and is usually denser. There are lots of similar puddings.

ppeatfruit · 20/09/2018 16:25

Well Taffeta We could've made the blancmange, it was only the show stopper which was unrealistic for the average person in the street to make (that was the case when it was with the Beeb.) I can even make a roulade!

Though I might not be the norm nowadays I suppose. I only bake at holiday time.

ppeatfruit · 20/09/2018 16:26

The bit I miss is the proper 'history' bit.

grumiosmum · 20/09/2018 16:30

Ah yes, I remember now, mousse has raw eggs in which I guess is a no-no now.

We always had mousse when I was a kid (posh). It often went wrong.

grumiosmum · 20/09/2018 16:30

The showstoppers are getting very silly though.

ppeatfruit · 20/09/2018 16:37

Well the eggs are cooked in a custard. BTW you do know that raw eggs have always been ok?

The stupid M.P. Edwina Currie woman forgot to mention that the salmonella was\is on the OUTSIDE of the eggs, on the shells ffs. easily washed off!!!!!

ppeatfruit · 20/09/2018 16:40

Well Ruby said she'd had a dessert in meltable chocolate ball!!! So not so unusual, I've never seen them though. I loved Pru saying she'd never want to eat choc. again!

grumiosmum · 20/09/2018 16:46

When my Mum made mousse the egg whites were used raw and whisked to peaks to make the mousse light & fluffy.

Is raw egg no longer verboten for pregnant women then?

grumiosmum · 20/09/2018 16:51

Mary Berry's raspberry mousse recipe (how my Mum made it): thehappyfoodie.co.uk/recipes/light-raspberry-mousse

Revolting recipe for blancmange - no eggs:

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/09/2018 18:03

I agree Countess - on an American show this would have been milked until the udders squeaked! (I hadn't noticed her hand either until it was mentioned on this thread and I went back to have a look)

Welcome KittyKlaws. As a latecomer, it's your turn to get a round in. I'll have a Cherry B (blancmange has made me feel all nostalgic).

Bird's Instant Whip . . . . now that's a hideous blast from the past. Like something from Quatermass and the Pit, as I recall.

ppeatfruit · 21/09/2018 09:06

Yes grumio's Blush silly me of course there's whipped raw egg white in mousse!! I suppose it's how you feel about it , I don't reckon a bit of mousse would hurt anyone , pregnant or not.!

raisedbyguineapigs · 21/09/2018 12:06

I thought raw eggs were fine for pregnant women now as long as they were lion marked. There was a pregnant chef of Great British Menu this week who was scoffing goats cheese, liver, raw eggs, you name it!

shumway · 21/09/2018 15:11

I'm going to see Prue at a book signing next friday.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 21/09/2018 19:13

@shumway please tell us you will be wearing a mahoosive jazzy necklace made from old spanners?

ppeatfruit · 22/09/2018 14:35

I thought SOME of Extra Slice was funny and some was silly. I like the way Jo takes the piss out of the producers byy suggesting they had to 'pad out' the programme which of course they do.

I Like Stephen Mangan ( his face was a picture looking at Tom Allen) and the other guy. Sandi was ok too. Nice to see Liam again.

yawning801 · 22/09/2018 14:41

Ooh I never realised that there was a GBBO thread!

I have no idea why I don't like Kim-Joy, she seems like a lovely person, but there's just something about her... I can't put my finger on it!

ppeatfruit · 22/09/2018 14:49

yawning It's only one of the best threads on MN (in my opinion). Welcome Grin See, we're nice!
