I bet sales of chick peas go up next week. I have eaten meringue made from aquafaba and they are very good.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 03/10/2018 08:16

Ruby has started to grow on me this week.

ppeatfruit · 03/10/2018 09:04

Hello all Grin I LUFFS Noel telling Rahul he's his English mummy and he couldn't disappoint her.!!!!

Satisfactory looser\leaver and satisfactory star baker this week!

Coulibiac a Russian salmon dish with hard boiled eggs and rice , it's fantastic!!!! But Dan's pastry looked weird man. I hope the spray he used on it is edible Grin Not surprised that Prue said she didn't want to eat it!

New thread m’dears, when you’re ready 🙂

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/10/2018 09:22

I had a recipe for a wild mushroom coulibiac in an old Christmas edition of BBC Vegetarian Good Food. I think it was Louise Pickford. Now I come to think of it, the same magazine had a very nice Sophie Grigson pine nut roast recipe. Wish I’d kept it now.

@lonicera gosh, not being sneery 🙁 just expressing a personal viewing and eating preference in solidarity with my cats just as I prefer pastry recipes to cake. Did not suggest it was not a suitable theme. Working with a substantially reduced palette of ingredients some of which are quite fundamental in traditional baking is an interesting challenge. like a round of Strictly without dancing

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 03/10/2018 09:47

Having a son who is allergic to milk and egg I just need them to have a gluten free vegan week and we will be super happy!

Love Dan. Never though he was smug. Love Ruby, she already confident and like a TV presenter which I imagine is where she will go. Rahul drives me mad with his terrified wetness. Bless him he needs some serious help with his anxiety before he explodes.

whatashower · 03/10/2018 10:07

Gbbo is first and foremost light entertainment.......it shouldnt make you uncomfortable. A baking programme should not have you worrying about mental health, the possible need for cbt and the consequences of potential fame. Rahul's vulnerability is getting very uncomfortable for me. Its all a bit Susan Boyle. Would hate to think this was a deliberate editorial strategy by C4 but I keep asking myself why he would enter this if it was so outwith his comfort zone (unless his Mum made him enter 🙄).

ppeatfruit · 03/10/2018 10:22

I got the feeling that Dan thought it was a no brainer that he would win, that didn't endear me to him. I'm glad he's gone.

BTW there's new thread peeps !!!!!!

whatashower · 03/10/2018 10:35

Ah thanks ppeatfruit

LoniceraJaponica · 03/10/2018 10:46

whatashower I used to think like you until DD started doing veganuary. It was quite a revelation. I have done some fantastic vegan baking and tried all sorts of things I would never have tried otherwise. The range of vegan alternatives to traditional foods is growing all the time.

DD and I have been to a few vegan food festivals and tried many foods that we would never have thought would work. The meringues are a really good example. The idea of using chick pea water from a tin of chick peas doesn't sound very appetising I agree, but it really does make very good meringues.

DD and I are really looking forward to vegan week.

BTW I am not vegan or even vegetarian. I just like everything (except parsnips Grin)

ChicagoLil · 03/10/2018 12:13

I don't think Rahul has MH problems. He has an expressive face. And is very polite. So his automatic response to Paul saying that his pastry has a soggy bottom is to apologise. Also, if you put your heart and soul into creating something quite hard then you (well, I would) also be bracing yourself against any negative criticism made by the judges.

whatashower · 03/10/2018 12:40

lonicera I make strictly vegan dishes, like you I eat everything, love good food from any food group. Including parsnips 😀. I am prepared to be inspired by vegan baking. I would be impressed with good gluten-free baking also as shop-bought gluten-free bread can be pretty inedible disappointing as coeliac sufferers know.

chicago I dont think Rahul has mental health problems either, it was a generalisation about focusing on vulnerabilities in contestant type programming in general. It feels like they are dialling up on Rahul in the editing that is all. I like to imagine him guffawing and being confident off camera, that is all.
As you were.
finishes old thread for completeness

Skyejuly · 03/10/2018 12:47

So glad Dan has gone. I really like Ruby, Manon amd Rahul. Briony has really grown on me this week.

wowfudge · 03/10/2018 12:52

I reckon it's bye bye Manon next week. Did anyone else see how Prue upset Jon when she said his pie looked like a giant sausage roll. He looked stung!
