A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

  • Something in the Rain
  • Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
  • Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

Confounding all expectations about such a niche preoccupation, we are nearing the end of this thread. In the tradition of the Westminsterenders, Trump and other seriously motivated groups of posters, shall we start a new one when this one is full? If so, what should we include in the header? My thoughts:

  • link to first thread;
  • list of best outlets for getting a steady supply;
  • a list of a few of our faves for newbies;
  • link to a good kdrama bingo card.

boatyardblues - all excellent suggestions, a sort of overall handy guide to lure newbies in! Probably best to stick to Netflix & Viki for sites as they are the best. My suggestions for faves would be Prison Playbook, Healer, Don't Dare to Dream, Black, Stranger, What's Up With Secretary Kim, Fight for My Way, Because this Is My First Life, I Hear Your Voice, Kill Me Heal Me

Bea I also hate it when they wrap up lickety split with just 5 or 10 minutes to show what happened next! I've watched 32 episodes of The Great Seducer (half hour format) only to have it all done & dusted in the last 10 minutes after a long slow burn, so although it was very engrossing I now feel slightly cheated & bereft!!
Fabricated City is in the movie section on drama bus so give that a go first as I don't know the answer to the amazon.com question.
With The K2 I did ff through the political bits cos they got a bit tedious, the rest is fine.

HeechulOppa have you seen Black? Might help the withdrawal symptoms. Kwang Soo is also in Live though that's a straight drama. I keep meaning to start Where Stars Land then sliding off on to something else as it doesn't seem very exciting.

What Bea said !!!

boatyardblues · 12/12/2018 18:21

Kwang Soo is great in Live.

AAAaaaarghhhh why did I start a new drama when there is so much to dooooo???

Cheese in the Trap on Viki with the guy from Man to Man playing an oddball obsessive type and can't tell if he's a goodie or a baddie, but he's the ML so he must be ok, right?

Must....go...do...work

boatyardblues · 13/12/2018 13:41

I’ll finish mine tonight. If I don’t have a temporary break, Christmas will not be happening in our place. I haven’t done any cards, made any food that needs advance prep or bought any presents yet. Nor is our house Christmas-ready for our imminent guests.

I have not started another one yet (will prob be The K2 ) for these very reasons... I, however, (smug face!) have bought all pressies... put up all deccies...and am ready to wrap... but.... I think I've been watching too much as I was in TK Maxx today, admiring all the fine mens knitwear and considering if ds would consider wearing a nice polo neck...and there were some lovely three quarter length tailored coats in Next... Arrrrgggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Ha Bea! You have given me an idea for DH’s xmas pressies.

Woo hoo! See! Watching all these dramas has its uses!!

bettys · 13/12/2018 19:33

Yep I am putting Korean sheet face masks (from Boots) in everyone's stockings. DS is hopefully giving me some random bowls & long spoons & metal chopsticks like seadays

bettys · 13/12/2018 19:33

ha ha!! ramyeon not random!!

Bea · 13/12/2018 20:31

... And add cotton buds in (paper stemmed of course! No plastic here!!)... in case someone has a cut and it needs dabbing at with a cotton bud!!

boatyardblues · 13/12/2018 21:24

I like the idea of random bowls. I want some lovely Japanese glazed stoneware noodle bowls.

Ooh pretty!
I was looking at these ramen bowls

boatyardblues · 14/12/2018 08:53

I tried watching English language telly last night - Pine Gap on Netflix - and was bored to tears. Soooo up its own arse, slow, ponderous, ooh there’s a spy in our midst (at ~58 mins), all dick- swingy man mooching. So I watched an episode of Sassy Go Go and cheered up immediately. Two words: Ji Soo 😍

Damn you all! I've fallen down a BTS rabbit hole!... This song just makes me want to cry!! It's so beautifully shot!... And the sentiment behind the song (about missing loved ones!) 😭😭 I know they're a bit plasticky... But... Look at the knitwear!.... And I can't even blame my love for this on the bone dislocating choreography!.. (which is jaw droppingly stunning!) Damn you!! KDRAMA!! grrrr! 😭😭😭😭😩😩😩😩
Bea · 14/12/2018 09:11

Boatyard!... Yes! Watched Masterchef the other day! Was not absorbed at all!!... Not one jumper in sight!... Just beards and tattoos! 😒😩

bettys · 14/12/2018 09:31

Couldn't agree more! Two of my previous favourites have just dropped new series on Netflix (Wanted and Travellers) and I can't be bothered.
However Hymn of Death has also just arrived & I can't wait! (Tragic doomed love story - true story so not a spoiler you see the end at the beginning - set in the Japanese occupation)

I am a convert to BTS Bea! Love their videos Blush

bettys · 14/12/2018 10:38

all dick-swingy man mooching - this and ‘fat-strong’ have put me off most American series.

Jisoo plays a prince in Scarlet Heart Ryeo there’s something very appealing about him 😍

Just when I think I have a final Oppa list another one comes along to take my eye (fickle). I’m looking at you Park Hae-Jin 😍

Bea · 14/12/2018 12:52

Re:BTS... I think they bring out the mother in me!... 😁I'm just worried about if they're being properly looked after!... Reading about the Kpop business just sounds like a treadmill and factory!... Are they getting enough sleep? Are they eating enough? Confused... Are they overworked?... 🤔🤔🤔🤔

boatyardblues · 14/12/2018 13:13

I agree about the Western fat-strong man mooching thing. The kdrama metrosexual, tailored, 7/8 length trousers & sockless brogues, coiffed look has really grown on me
