A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

  • Something in the Rain
  • Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
  • Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

Bea where do you find this stuff? 😂 I just disappeared down a rabbit hole again!

Ep 7 of Beautiful Gong Shim and it’s ok but still preferring Kill Me Heal Me

Boatyardblues Try Secret GArden I started that a while back & it had potential but I got distracted by Pinocchio as I was working my way through Lee Jong Suk’s back catalogue.

boatyardblues · 07/12/2018 21:58

I tried Secret Garden but it was annoying me and I’m not remotely into Lee Jong Suk, so I’m giving Memories of Alhambra a spin. So far so good. Will keep you all posted.

Mr Baseball Player from Prison Playbook is in Alhambra. It’s pretty pacey and well done. The naarative twist (revealed in ep 1) was not the one I was expecting.

OK, the last 5 mins of episode 1 kick it up to a 9.8/10 potential-wise. 👌

I’m only sticking with Beautiful Gong Shim until crap sister gets her comeuppance then it’s skippitydoodah to the end. The male lead is great but the female lead is bland somehow.
Then it’s off to the Alhambra

Bea · 08/12/2018 06:58

Where do I find all these goodies? !... Just a little fan girl stalking on Tumblr... Instagram... Twitter....
Decades of various fangirling has taught me well!

Bea · 08/12/2018 07:34

Anyone seen this? Looks fun! Ji Chang Wook film... Might give me a break from the push / pull romance of Suspicious Partner (it's that point of the drama where the slow burn has been finally resolved (yay!) only to be thwarted within seconds! Arrrrgghh!!)
Its got lovely friend from Fight For My Way!

boatyardblues · 08/12/2018 07:57

Is it on Netflix Bea?

OP posts:
bettys · 08/12/2018 08:03

I’ve seen it, very fast moving, lots of action, no romance. The version I saw was badly subbed so I got confused!

boatyardblues · 08/12/2018 08:13

No romance? Shock What’s the point?

Ooops! Forgot to pop on where you can find it! 😳... Not had a really good look yet!!... I'll let you know... But if Bettys could only find a bad sub... Not sure my surfing will come up with anything better!... Looks good fun though!!

I don’t like Lee Jong Suk either but for the shallowest of reasons - his nose really annoys me Blush

Funnily enough I didn’t think much of Secret Garden or Korean Odyssey after their first episodes. In both cases there were months between me watching their first episodes and going back to give them another try. They are both the only two programmes I’ve done that with and both are now my absolute favourites. For me the first episode of Secret Garden was a bit dark, but then it turned wonderful! Hyun Bin is hilarious and the Oska character, as i’ve Said before, is one of my all time fave 2ML. Personally once it gets to the body swapping bits it’s laugh out loud funny.

My username - Heechul Oppa - is because Heechul is my oppa! Kim Heechul is in Super Junior (Siwon’s group) and he is also one of the hosts of Men on a Mission. He’s hilarious and very unpredictable by Korean celebrity standards. If you watch the Mr Simple MV he’s the third guy to sing solo - the one in shades with a ponytail.

My dh loves Kdrama and kpop as much as I do. He actually got me into it! Basically, there was a Japanese actress he likes (Haruka Ayase) and he’d heard she’d been in a funny Jdrama. We have a multi-region DVD player so he bought a copy of the drama (Hotaru no Hikari) and we adored it! So we bought the second series and loved it to. Then I found a streaming app that let us watch jdramas so we got totally hooked.

Then the app disappeared!!

We were genuinely gutted, then dh found Viki, which has a few JDramas on it (I really recommend Last Cinderella). But they don’t have many Jdramas. Dh was off work around that time so he watched the first few episodes of Secret Garden and Love Rain and really enjoyed them, so persuaded me to try them. As I mentioned I thought Secret Garden was too dark (JDramas tend to be even fluffier than kdramas and the themes tend to be more ‘slightly older lady left on the shelf, gives up hope of love, bags a younger boyfriend). Plus I really missed hearing Japanese and seeing the Japanese culture (which is very different to Korean culture. Korean attitudes are more similar to western attitudes I found, but that’s by the by). Anyway, I ended up being hooked by Love Rain, went onto Gong Shim and a few others, went back to Secret Garden and was absolutely irretrievably hooked!

Re Siwon’s dog... er, I suspect his ‘rehoming’ might have been a euphemism, yes.

Ah Bea, it’s really sweet you think you won’t go down the kpop rabbit hole! I was once like you too. What you don’t realise is that you already are! Most dramas have kpop soundtracks, that’s how it gets you. And basically all kdramas have at least one kpop star as a lead / 2nd lead. Gong Shim herself, Siwon, I think the FL in Secret Garden, V (from BTS) in Hwarang, The annoying try-hard guy in Secretary Kim - list goes on.

Embrace it!

bettys · 08/12/2018 12:31

What's wrong with his nose???

HeechulOppa · 08/12/2018 12:50

It looks a bit unnatural - I find it a bit distracting. He’s a good actor but he looked too shiny for me to concentrate. I appreciate I am in the minority here!

bettys · 08/12/2018 19:32

Oh oh oh!! Memories of the Alhambra bloody good so far if it keeps this up it'll be amazing!

boatyardblues · 08/12/2018 20:01

I don’t like Lee Jong Suk either but for the shallowest of reasons - his nose really annoys me

Its the ears for me, with the nose a close second. Also, as I said before, he looks like one of the default animé boy children my son draws.

I have watched all 3 Alhambra episodes that are available, but it doesn’t say when more will drop. 🤷‍♂️ If you’ve got to Emma yet, do you think she might be the real game developer? I have my suspicions that things are not as straightforwards as they first appear.

OP posts:
bettys · 08/12/2018 20:17

On episode 2 so far, haven’t got to Emma yet. It’s making me want to visit Granada.

Re Lee Jong Suk I am fascinated by his face for those reasons. In W: Two Worlds he plays a comic book character that crosses into the real world, his looks are ideal for that. I like him as an actor also, or maybe it’s the dramas that he’s done (except for Dr Stranger )

boatyardblues · 08/12/2018 20:27

It’s making me want to visit Granada.

Oh yes, definitely. Me too. I keep trying to work out which bits are filmed on location and which bits in Korea. One of the hotel rooms is definitely not in Spain. See if you can spot the giveaway. Wink

I had to let DH watch the Strictly semi-final earlier on catch-up, but I’m now giving His Master’s Sun on Netflix a go. The FL is the woman from DDTD. I’m only 20 min in but she’s so watchable I’m already sold. Plus it has a good vibe.

Yay! Healer’s handler too - as the chaebol ML’s mother, I think. Still getting to grips with the relationships. She scrubs up very nicely when she hasn’t got to wear a fright wig and live in a gloomy IT bunker scarfing gimbap.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 08/12/2018 23:20

Double yay! 2nd ML is very handsome.

OP posts:
bettys · 08/12/2018 23:47

Oh yes 2nd ML v dishy! I think Healer’s handler is his aunt with a toy boy husband, if I remember rightly. I love ghost seeing lady when she’s drunk!

Bea · 09/12/2018 00:18

Half way through Last ep of Suspicious Partner... It's been a hoot!... Now I'm going to watch Healer next!... Then The K2... Ji Chang Wook...❤️❤️

You were right Bettys... He'll fill the void until PHS and PSJ come out with anything new!... 😁... Forgive me.... I'm equally shallow! 😔

Bea · 09/12/2018 00:54

Suspicious Partner.. Finished!... It was lovely! And gripping!! Loved all the office staff!... Loved all the angst!... It was a big thumbs up!! ❤️❤️❤️

NEXT.....!

bettys · 09/12/2018 01:03

I loved the scene in the last ep with all the girls drunk & giving finger hearts!

Healer is great, and has Secretary Kim in as the FL. She had good chemistry with JCW too (she knows how to pick ‘em)
