K-Drama recommendations

A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

• Something in the Rain
• Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
• Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

Really enjoyed Kill Me Heal Me though the backstory is quite dark.

Now what next?? I think I've watched everything with PSJ in. Suppose I ought to do some jobs before starting another one.

Oooh look it's nearly lunchtime

I normally have netflix on in the background whilst cooking... But it's completely impossible to do that with kdrama! Kdrama needs full attention!... I have to save all my watching for evening!!
Sigh! PSJ was in London during August!! (stalking him on Instagram!)... Can you imagine bumping into the vice president whilst out and about!? ❤️❤️❤️😂😂😂

I follow PSJ on instagram but only started recently so missed he was in London, feel slightly thwarted I didn't know would totally have been up for a bit of stalking

It's the cinema post... I thought just random cinema in Korea... But once I figured out he was in London in August... Went back to Instagram and inspected... And lo and behold... Cinema post.. There's a red phone box... And it's an empire cinema!...

Ep 7 of suspicious partner... Awwwww! It's soooo sweet! Loving the mix of romance... Angst... Thriller... Who dunnit... Office banter!

Suspicious Partner is great, and Ji Chang Wook is very easy on the eye 😂

Trying out a few before choosing one for the weekend binge. So many kdramas now on Netflix but hardly any on Amazon Prime, they need to up their game!

Beautiful Gong Shim on Netflix, Betty. Heechul was right on this one. It has everything. I had to go to bed last night part way through the final episode, but I can’t for the finale.

Boatyard... Oooo! Just did a quick read up on Gong Shim... Looks good!!... It's on my list!.. Need to finish suspicious. Then possibly Gong Shim or Healer!!.... Not enough hours in the day to watch all these goodies! 😭❤️

I tried Beautiful Gong Shim before but dropped it after a couple of episodes. I'll have another go .

I personally think An Dan Tae is one of the best ML characters I’ve seen. He’s really charismatic, very funny and relatable. Namgoong Min is really cool - he was fabulous in Chief Kim (although I thought The Undateables was a let down). I love the rapport he has with Gong Shim, like when he tries on her wig. Me and my DH have adopted the word ‘perverny’ because of this (she has him listed on her phone as a mashup of pervert and attorney, which is subtitled as ‘perverny’).

Siwon’s dog... went to live on a farm. Essentially that was the official story.

I only have 30 mins of Korean Odyssey left and I am bereft!!! It is so my favourite. I understand the not fancying ML bit - i’d Only ever seen him in ‘My Girlfriend is a gumiho/ 9-tailed fox’ and although he was good in that he wasn’t my type and I found it hard to see him as a sexy male lead (shallow). But he is really really good in this and is now on my official list of oppa’s. Plus he was on an episode of Men on a Mission and he came across as really lovely and sweet, and genuinely likeable. The guy who is dressed a bit Johnny Depp at the start, who asks the little girl to help him, becomes one of the most brilliant 2ML of all time - he is absolutely hilarious, hams it up and is a funny and cool character (Ma Wang - Devil King). You get used to the cgi quite quickly (although the cgi in the penultimate episode is pretty bad) and honestly it just becomes a fab romance with supernatural elements. Loads of great supporting characters too - PK the idol (bleached blonde hair), Miss Ma (Ma Wang’s Secretary), Han Ju (FL’s colleague - the coach in Fight My Way). There is also a character who appears from the second or third episode who is amazing. I won’t spoil it by saying who but they turn out to be not as expected.

Not sure what we’re going to watch next - I want to start Memory of the Alahambra (Hyun Bin is brilliant - the ML in Secret Garden), my dh wants to watch that airport one that’s just finished although i’m Not so keen. But I chose the last one so it’s his turn.

Heechul - Your other half is also into kdrama? I am so envious. It would be more likely that my DH would cite it in divorce proceedings.

By the way, what does heechul oppa mean?

Heechuloppa I am impressed you watch with your DH, mine just casts his eyes to the heavens, though is pleased I no longer complain about the football on TV.

I have read good reviews of Memories of the Alhambra so will start that soon. Beautiful Gong Shim is improving on its 2nd view but not tugging at my heartstrings or making me stay up late though I agree the ML is very good.

So pleased Siwon's dog went to a farm (is that a euphemism though?).

I like the sound of your Oppa's list, I think I will have to adopt that name for my favourite ML list too.
