Telly addicts

I need an amazing, epic TV drama series I haven’t seen...

We are officially telly addicts and I think we’ve seen most things at this point. I’m worried there are no amazing, undiscovered things left and I’m really in need of something brilliant, multiple series etc.

Favourite series are The Shield, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Better Call Saul

We’ve seen most of the well known things I can think of (Mad Men, Sons Of Anarachy, ER, Halt and Catch Fire, Handmaids Tale all watched quite recently) and we’ve seen so much over the years I think we’ve bled TV dramas dry.

We have Netflix and prime but happy to get hold of other stuff too.

What’s amazing that you’ve seen and is maybe not quite as well known? I’ve heard Justified is good, anyone seen it?

The two big series I can think of that we haven’t watched fully are The Sopranos and West Wing - is West Wing a bit dated now? We did watch the first season or so of the Sopranos when Sky Atlantic started but then we stopped having Sky so it fell off the radar.

Deadwood. It's brilliant - Ian McShane as a greasy, shifty, yet hugely sympathetic saloon owner* in a gold rush mining town, presiding over a nascent community of miners, drinkers, bar girls, dealers, law men. All hell breaks loose at least once an episode and the swearing is magnificent.

  • autocorrected to 'salon owner' which would have made for a very different sort of series

Another huge fan of Friday Night Lights here, although I think it might have been taken off Netflix unfortunately. Kyle Chandler was superb in this, and also in Bloodline.

I notice there’s very little fluff amongst these suggestions so may I also offer
Ugly Betty
Desperate Housewives
Nashville
Brothers and Sisters

Babylon 5. Seriously epic and sadly underrated sci-fi series. Highly intelligent and deeply thoughtful.

Carnivale. Disturbing, mysterious supernatural series about a travelling carnival in the American dustbowl of the 1930s - and it looks absolutely sensational.

BagelGoesWalking · 25/08/2018 01:35

Netflix - The Last Kingdom - set at the time of Dane invasions to Britain, when King Alfred was trying to make what we now know as England. Hot Danes, great characters, men and women, awesome fight scenes. You're lucky, you have time to catch up before S3 comes in the autumn.

Orphan Black - amazing! You won't have seen anything like it.

MozzieMagnet · 25/08/2018 01:57

Netflix.
Money Heist. they should have called it Paper House or House of paper, can only assume House of cards led to the shite title
It is dubbed in English if you prefer - I saw it that way.
It is absolutely fantastic. Epic does not begin to cover it.
De nada! Wink

I agree with Line of Duty and the same writer, Jed Mercurio, has a new series starting on the Beeb this Sunday, called the Bodyguard.

MrsJamin · 25/08/2018 06:25

Band of brothers, outstanding TV, more like a series of movies. Produced by Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Follows the parachute regiment from D day until the end of the war.

Iamblossom · 25/08/2018 12:30

Why oh why has no-one mentioned Ray Donovan yet? Brilliant.

Another vote for The Affair, and I also loved Outlander, and Big Little Lies.

ElleyBear13 · 26/08/2018 19:32

Life on mars & ashes to ashes - happy valley and poldark are firm favourites here!

HollowTalk · 26/08/2018 19:35

Have you seen the Scandi dramas, OP? If you haven't seen The Bridge I am so jealous of you. There are four series. Also The Killing is fantastic - particularly series 1. Those two programmes are the best I've seen on television.

redsummershoes · 26/08/2018 19:35

bosch?

PeridotCricket · 26/08/2018 19:42

Narcos

halfwaytosomewhere · 26/08/2018 19:45

Has anyone watched Hap and Leonard ? One of the best things on prime, really well done.

FurryDice · 26/08/2018 19:54

Orphan Black
Deadwood
Friday night lights

And I was recently recommending this to my friend, a series called Rescue Me about firefighters in NYC after 9/11. That makes it sound dry and perhaps worthy but it was created and co-written by Denis Leary (who also stars) and it was one of the funniest, sexy, brilliant tv shows I’ve watched. If you can find it, do give it a go.

babooshkamybush · 26/08/2018 20:00

Definitely go back to the Sopranos...but before you do...watch Oz. Without Oz, the Sopranos, the Wire etc wouldn't have existed.

Also Game of Thrones...everyone watches it for a reason...fits the epic description.

Also the Leftovers...a few people have mentioned it. I had to bribe my husband to watch it with me...he got hooked and said it's basically the best thing he's watched in years. It's a sucker punch emotionally - there's little light in the darkness but it's utterly compelling and all the cast are so good.

Envious as I'm writing that you'd get to watch those shows from scratch!

Jb291 · 26/08/2018 20:04

Outlander
The West Wing
Supernatural

Highly recommend all three. The West Wing was amazing and so good for binge watching

NicoAndTheNiners · 26/08/2018 20:11

Definetely West Wing, I only watched it for the first time last year and was obsessed with it.

Also Greys anatomy.

AdelesBeard · 26/08/2018 20:15

Succession?

ktjb39 · 26/08/2018 20:19

Just came on to recommend Succession and I see the poster above got there before me. LOVED it!

afrikat · 26/08/2018 20:26

I know the thread has moved on a bit but you mentioned Justified in your OP - I absolutely love that show. Another one of my faves is Banshee, ultra violent and quite far fetched but brilliant

The Leftovers was utterly amazing. As someone else mentioned it's not exactly light and fun but it's mesmerising. I wasn't sure after the first episode but stuck with it and so glad I did

Sense8 was fab. Quite odd but I loved it

DwangelaForever · 26/08/2018 20:28

Netflix:

Unabomber
Designated survivor
Currently working our way through shooter at the moment and it's great

FurryDice · 26/08/2018 20:46

Oh yes, I discovered Oz completely by chance when they used to show it at stupid o’clock on channel 4, many, many years ago. It’s brilliant.

BagelGoesWalking · 26/08/2018 20:59

Afrikat- I tried the Leftovers about 6mths ago. Got through a season, I think, but it's so weird and depressing. I don't usually mind those two things but this was weirdness on the next level.

LadyFlumpalot · 26/08/2018 21:10

Black Sails, Lucifer, Westworld.

Iamblossom · 27/08/2018 17:42

Loved leftovers.

Have watched every single episode of grey's.
