Last thread is nearly full.

I remember why I stopped watching around this time originally. The stories aren't that great, foxes, too much bettabuys etc. The Weatherfield Puma! Wasn't that mentioned recently in Corrie, Kirk very briefly went looking for it.

clowdyweewee · 12/12/2018 06:44

I'd forgotten this Joss character but remember being really irrirated by the whole Vera/ royal family shite the first time round.

jessstan2 · 12/12/2018 06:50

I'm watching it now. Percy's waistcoat has gone AWOL in the hospital charity shop, Jenny is in love with a dentist in late thirties who says he's going to leave his wife for her. Silly fool, she's only 20.

Alec is opening a club with Deidre's bloke, Phil Jennings. I can't remember clearly but think he was married and she didn't know.

Vera's mum has died, sad, her dad is now in the picture. I don't remember him, he doesn't look much older than her.

No Sally and Kevin today, I like them, young, with Rosie, and Gail and Martin with little David.

Mrscaindingle · 12/12/2018 12:49

The actor who plays Jenny's dentist turns up again years later as a car salesman who has an affair with Sally.

HelenaDove · 13/12/2018 16:21

i see Racquel has got the simpering voice now.

TheEfficientBaxter · 13/12/2018 17:15

I never thought I would say this, but I'm getting heartily sick of seeing those meerkats.

clowdyweewee · 13/12/2018 20:37

I never tired of Oleg.

HelloGabriel · 15/12/2018 12:33

I love this thread but find it hard to read as it contains spoilers 😂

Ridiculous I know but I've genuinely never seen these episodes before and I'm so invested in the storylines.

TheEfficientBaxter · 15/12/2018 13:57

It was Sarah Lancashire's idea to develop Raquel's character as the vulnerable, idealist airhead we all know and love.

Originally, she was supposed to become the Street's resident nasty bitch!

Imagine that Shock

Kannet · 16/12/2018 14:18

Have to say, des is being a dick

SecretaryBird · 17/12/2018 09:30

Hated Steph and Des the first time around, nothing has changed! Xmas Hmm

Kannet · 17/12/2018 12:41

To be fair to her, she only wanted him to pull his weight. She's an annoying character though

Just catching up. I've been disappointed with the lack of Steve but he seems to be back now so that's good.

One thing I really like about Bet is the way she slaps on her happy face for the customers instantly from looking brokenhearted. I think it shows the reality of a customer facing job and that someone can look fine but be feeling awful.

Vivaldi1678 · 18/12/2018 12:12

I had forgotten just how good Bet is - a wonderful character of depth, compassion, maturity and humour. One of the best, if not the best.

I am also enjoying Ken Barlow's performances - he has such an expressive face, particularly when he disapproves of something - it could turn the milk at a 100 yards.

Des is absolutely vile, you can see that Steph would be on the relationships page if MN were around then, that everyone would be saying, red flags, controlling, LTB, and they would be right.

It is quite interesting to watch the casual misogyny, the way the women are always doing household tasks whilst the men expect to be waited on -they are generally the breadwinners etc and some of the scenes are cringeworthy, especially the Miss Bettabuys beauty contest. But there are also strong women who hold things together and Bet is definitely my favourite. A survivor who isn't bitter, who accepts her lot in life with grace and humour.

clowdyweewee · 18/12/2018 16:21

I know Steve and Andy are supposed to be unidentical (?) twins, but there's not a scrap of similarity between them. Steve was so pretty!!

Kannet · 20/12/2018 16:49

Can't help but wonder how little sally was planning on paying Martin to mind the baby, if it was still going to pay to work for three hours

OP posts:
Mrscaindingle · 21/12/2018 09:14

Vivaldi I am also loving Bet a lot more this time round but can't agree with you about Ken, imo he only has 2 expressions .. exasperation and his "fierce" angry look.

SuperSuperSuper · 26/12/2018 13:16

I'm also loving Bet. I completely underestimated Julie Goodyear at the time.

I'm unusual on this thread in that I like the Steph character. I find her nuanced, and think she's realistic - a bright if self-centred young woman in a society that's still v patriarchal. I understand why Des is attracted to her and frustrated by her.

I'm surprised that Kev was ok with Martin minding Rosie. He strikes me as the type to whinge about that.

One of the things that stuck in my mind from classic CS, oddly, was Phyllis' horror at Des microwaving tea - possibly because I concurred with her at the time lol. That scene was shown a few days ago.

I don't remember Joss first time round. I'm sensing that this blood group thing is going to lead to his departure.

Simon Gregson was ridiculously good looking as a young man. I remember fancying him. Nigel Pivaro too (he must be due back soon).

Overall, it really shows up how badly the show has declined. I don't care if I miss an ep of current CS but I record and watch classic CS religiously.

Iwantacampervan · 02/01/2019 15:28

It is back today - my afternoons or early mornings are sorted now!

Kannet · 05/01/2019 21:09

Hopefully they go right back to the eighties

OP posts:
Kannet · 05/01/2019 21:11

My guess is they will go with the Tates arrival which was early nineties I think

Absentwomen · 08/01/2019 18:48

Was that a young Antonio Banderas as the photographer with the journalist?

I could not catch the credits at the end.

x2boys · 08/01/2019 18:53

I wouldn't have thought so Absent ,when was Philadelphia ?must google

ShortTelomeres · 10/01/2019 12:58

No, it wasn't Antonio Banderas, I had a close look when I watched it yesterday, (for research purposes) the photographer was not in the credits, prob as he didn't have a speaking part. He did have a look of Antonio Banderas though Grin
