So, classic Eastenders starts airing on the UKTV Drama channel from tomorrow! Two episodes from noon, and they’ll also be on UKTV catchup.

Use this thread to talk about Den, Angie, Arthur, poodle perms, poor fashion choices and Ethel’s Willy.

I loved it when Ali was talking in cafe about bank wanting give them £20k mortgage oh how times have changed.

gower4 · 09/10/2018 10:08

The Christmas episodes were great. Really captured Christmases as I remember them.
Den and Angie seemed quite loved up under the mistletoe! I don't remember any of that.

HelenaDove · 09/10/2018 14:53

YY gower It made me feel a bit nostalgic but also a bit sad.

Akire · 09/10/2018 15:11

It was really sad about Michelle bedroom, finally said she can have Grans old one but been months. Would they really expect her and baby to sleep in living room I’d Mark showed up and wanted to give him a bedroom because he’s “a boy”.

Noticed how small the mini mark is not sure what they knocked into to make it bigger as laundrette is next door

HelenaDove · 10/10/2018 01:16

Serious stuff being played down and minimized

Saeeds obscene phone calls.

Cassie being physically assaulted by her mums boyfriend.

Reminding us that the 80s wasnt all great.

Akire · 10/10/2018 08:54

Yes you are right, nurses girl friendgot mugged yesterday and he said something like “Well I did offer go with you!” It was broad day light in market. But it’s womens fault being available to be mugged.

For some reason I thought Mark was gay. I was only 10 first time round I know later he’s get HIV and must have made that connection but now I remember he had got from woman he married but she then died?

I have been more and more impressed by Micheele acting compared to Sharon. How she is still in it I don’t know. She bit like Danny dyer in that she has 3 expressions.

dingdongdigeridoo · 13/10/2018 15:58

I think Mark got HIV from a girlfriend who he later married. But then she died very soon afterwards. I’m amazed that the Fowlers don’t seem that bothered that he’s still missing.

I’ve now seen the episode where Den is revealed as the father. He was such a dick to poor Michelle. Agree that Sharon is a terrible actor. I’ve never seen her in anything but EE, so I guess she’s lucky to have the work!

Sexist stuff really does get minimised in this show. Like Ali being a creep to every woman or Wicksy boasting about his conquests. Yuck.

I was watching last weeks (my goodness , Christmas was grim back then in Albert Square Xmas Grin )

I did a Wiki Search to find out when Andy leaves (not a spolier we all know) Debbie is a whingey pain in the bum but Andy must be a nightmare to live with, smug git.
Does she end up with 'Nice Policeman' ?
Who has their house/flat now ? The position of the staircase isn't one I recgnise. I think the flats were made back into a house though.

When does Todd Cartey roll up on his bike ? The original Mark actor David Scarboro died in April '88 .

Marks wife was Jill, there was a huge storyline with Arthur and Mark and the intolerances behind the HIV story,

tobee · 15/10/2018 12:16

Always puzzled, still puzzled about Debbie and Andy's relationship. They never had a nice word for each other. Always in conflict

Akire · 15/10/2018 18:00

I’m confused as Dot lives in high rise block. Not sure if same one as Kathy. Trying move to flat on square but ends up in big council house. Not sure how that worked as I can only remember her having house presume would had when Nik was small.

Also confused as Dens lady friend turned up pub and everyone knows about. But all I remember is him giving angie divorce papers one Christmas in shock. Yet he’s be at it with prove for years.

HelenaDove · 16/10/2018 01:10

We should hit the infamous Christmas 86 episodes at Christmas because EE was only on twice a week back then so we are getting through five weeks worth in a week.

Loved the scenes with Pete and the drag queen

HelenaDove · 16/10/2018 01:22

Poor Michelle.

HelenaDove · 16/10/2018 01:35

Anita Dobson is an amazing actress.

HelenaDove · 16/10/2018 02:24

Found this on Twitter Someone has put up a link to an episode that Drama couldnt show. The reason why is explained in the thread. Its the episode from 21 Jan 1986.

Letisha dean ( Sharon) did a series called the 'hello girls' when she left EE the first time in the 80s.
It only lasted one season and was set in the 1950s I think.

AamdC · 16/10/2018 18:31

Michelle looks so old and frumpy compared to modern day teenagers , its like shes 40 at 16 i was a teenager in the 80,s .

Akire · 16/10/2018 18:41

Part of it is no central heating. They all come down in -5 tog neck to floor dressing gowns. It’s odd that Gran qualifies for home help as Pauline has so much to do yet same time she out working and Gran becomes perfectly capable of minding baby Martin all day.

Talking about Dr Leg losing wife in war bomb that was sad and didn’t know that. But guess would been common for man his age.

Considering how all main ones that work in shops like cafe and mini mart work all day and seem broke yet Pauline and Arthur on really low paid jobs seem have much better standard of living. While pete and Kathy are very wel off.

AamdC · 16/10/2018 19:25

Pauline and Arthur live with Lou though, i thought it was her house.

gower4 · 16/10/2018 23:02

Can't believe the way Den was basically allowed openly to cheat, with lots of people making comments like "well, you can understand what he sees in her" !!!
Anita Dobson is fantastic.

HelenaDove · 16/10/2018 23:44

And we also see the attitudes towards crimes being commited against working class people.

How many times did Naima phone the police. The attitudes are blatant in the episode missing from Dramas repeat run which ive linked in an above post.

gower4 · 17/10/2018 16:20

In some ways it's a shame to go through it so quickly. Den and Angie will have left quite soon!! The gradual build up of the drama was the best bit of it.

gower4 · 17/10/2018 16:21

I remember really disliking Jan back in the day - she's still bloody annoying! Grin

dingdongdigeridoo · 18/10/2018 01:13

I just watched Martin’s christening. Baby Martin is so cute! I loved Pauline’s ‘glamorous’ makeover which involved a brown suit, tie and fascinator. Why don’t women wear ties anymore? It’s so fetching. Grin

It’s funny that Pete throws his cash around, despite only running a fruit and veg stall. I think Kathy is a barmaid. We’ve seen her do about 2 shifts. Of course, if you really wanted to have a high-flying career you worked in a bank like Debbie. I remember at school people were always being told to become bank managers.

Who has the Vic when Den and Angie leave?

OP posts:
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/10/2018 12:17

Isn't it Eddie Royle who takes over?
I remember him walking Roly and having issues with Nick Cotton.
