So, classic Eastenders starts airing on the UKTV Drama channel from tomorrow! Two episodes from noon, and they’ll also be on UKTV catchup.

Use this thread to talk about Den, Angie, Arthur, poodle perms, poor fashion choices and Ethel’s Willy.

Ive not caught up either as there are so many episodes on! Just watching Michelle’s pregnancy storyline. It’s shocking how they’re all agreeing that she should have an abortion, but also going on about how awful it is and how it’s murder. I guess it was a lot more taboo back then.

It’s SO sexist too. Pete Beale seems to be the worst offender. He and Kathy are such a weird couple.

Gillian Taylforth wasnt even old enough to play Kathy.

Really sad that a pregnant Michele is still sharing her parents bedroom while favourite oldest son bedroom who’s left home least 3m ago is empty!! No one battling the injustice. That is very typical of its day.

I don’t remember to much about next few years so given older Michele was a teacher we can assume she did stay at school and do well. Which out of all the teens then and now is somewhat of a miracle.

Also really shocking that seems no maternity pay at all for low paid jobs. So a few weeks after Martin is born she is back at work part time. With no tax credits and the like it was more of a trap it was work full time in job with no min wage and get no benfit top up or stay on benefits.

I had exactly the same pink seashell bulldog clip that Debbie was wearing in her hair.

gower4 · 04/10/2018 17:28

I had that clip as well! And Pauline's blue one 😂

HelenaDove · 04/10/2018 20:41

Wont be long before we see Fergie bows.

HelenaDove · 04/10/2018 20:41

And banana clips.

Now its approaching Christmas 1985. I remember getting up for school while it was still dark and the first thing i saw when i woke up was the poster for Santa Claus The Movie ( the one with Dudley Moore in it) which was on my bedroom wall on the left side of my bed.

#1980sChristmases,

HelenaDove · 05/10/2018 01:29

Also clearly heard a couple of them say that Christmas is two weeks away These were the days when decorations didnt go up until a fortnight before.

gower4 · 05/10/2018 12:57

I think it only really got going at the start of 86. Or maybe that's all I can properly remember

pinkchampagne1 · 05/10/2018 17:35

I'm loving it far more than modern Eastenders. It was less far fetched back then so seemed more believable. There were no rules against advertising then either. I saw Lou carrying a Boots and a Woolworths bag. Now it's all make believe brands and everything comes from the Minute Mart!

I love Lou Beale's character!

Those twisty bright paper chains. My dad was good at doing them. Dont really see this done much anymore.

The bright paper that people used to do them used to come in a roll.

tobee · 06/10/2018 00:52

Just remembered when Den was in a certain mood, he'd ask Ange if she'd like to go for "a little lie down". Boak 🤮

HelenaDove · 06/10/2018 01:01

Saeed ..............what a creep

tobee · 06/10/2018 01:15

Just wrote on the current Eastenders thread. There's Lofty in classic EE, the original Halfway.

I thought Den didn't fancy Ange and that was the whole problem. Did they have some happy times? Can't remember

tobee · 06/10/2018 21:25

Happy times? Not going that far. But they were still having sex.

pinkchampagne1 · 07/10/2018 14:50

pinkchampagne1 · 08/10/2018 16:20

I used to love Jim'll Fix it Confused I loved Charles In Charge too. I fancied Scott Baio at the time

Akire · 08/10/2018 19:42

I’ve just watched first Xmas and went from Xmas eve to Boxing Day. No great big thing just for show. Have really enjoyed most of it, agree about much more normal story lines. I always thought Sharon had half decent life in Vic but they really are nasty all timeto each other. Don’t think said anything pleasant yet.

HelenaDove · 09/10/2018 00:34

Mary was holding a red Tesco carrier bag I remember those I accidentally melted one on top of a hob in a school cookery lesson Grin
