So, classic Eastenders starts airing on the UKTV Drama channel from tomorrow! Two episodes from noon, and they’ll also be on UKTV catchup.

Use this thread to talk about Den, Angie, Arthur, poodle perms, poor fashion choices and Ethel’s Willy.

Frank and Pat after Den and Ange I think?

HelenaDove · 18/10/2018 22:54

I definately prefer Eastenders pre Mitchell

gower4 · 18/10/2018 23:00

Same here

tobee · 18/10/2018 23:07

I thought he had more than issues with Nick Cotton?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/10/2018 23:12

Yes , he had more than issues but I don;t want to do a Spoiler Grin
Some posters weren't even born when Classic EE aired

MrsTommyBanks · 18/10/2018 23:17

Anyone else really excited to see Dr Legg in tonights real time EastEnders?

tobee · 18/10/2018 23:50

Ooh ooh I haven't caught up yet, MrsTommy. It's been amusing seeing him and the social worker flirting!

tobee · 19/10/2018 00:26

Hot drinks 25p!!!!!!! 😛

tobee · 19/10/2018 00:33

Naima not the best actress.
Dot didn't really get into her stride for a bit did she. She was a bit too comedy.

HelenaDove · 19/10/2018 00:57

I LOVE the drag queen bloke (didnt catch his name)

tobee · 19/10/2018 01:09

Touch of the Tim Curry about him! He's just the right amount of believable as a turn who does rough pubs in the east end.

I love it when, on soaps, people have their breakfast they rush off in the middle of it, usually running back to grab a bit of toast on the go! That plate of breakfast Wicksy was having seemed to available to anyone who sat in front of it!

dingdongdigeridoo · 19/10/2018 09:32

I had to look up Eddie Royal as I don’t remember him. I sort of remember watching Pat and Frank as a kid. Pat Butcher is my favourite so I can’t wait for her arrival.

I also look at the prices on the boards in this show! 75p for a glass of wine in the Vic. Bargain. You can get a meal in the caff for about a quid too. Although looking at the board it’s often something that’s a bit grim, like flan.

What would the average wage been in 1985 /86 i was 12/13 inn1986 so no idea and 8 dont rhink my parents would have discussed thar with me,

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/10/2018 10:54

Eddie Royal was Ex Police and had a face that would suggest he'd been punched a few times.
Nick was doing his drug withdrawel ( Dot made this happen) so it's a while yet.

I didn't realise Pat'n'Frank would be in so soon.

Does that mean we'll get Riiiiiiiiiiiccccccckkkkkkkaaaaaaaaaaaayyy soon. Grin

AamdC · 19/10/2018 11:05

And maybe a very young and youthful Daniella Westbrook ......

tobee · 19/10/2018 12:00

Pat came back first, I think, with quite harsh make up. I remember Pete not being impressed and calling her a "fat dollop". Which was nice.

Wicksy's hair in the second after midnight episode was a sight to behold!

tobee · 19/10/2018 12:03

Talking of Daniella W, Eastenders was a pretty difficult place to work with regards to certain substances. I was reading up about Sandy "Sue Osman" Ratcliff, who in the early seventies had been a model in the wraith like style, was apparently a heroin addict.

dingdongdigeridoo · 19/10/2018 12:10

A quick google suggests the average wage was £8,890. Although most of the characters are probably on less than that as it’s a poor area. Mary was offered the job in the laundrette and it paid something like £1.25 an hour.

I thought Frank’s disappearance was a classic 80s EE story. But apparently that wasn’t til 1994? Let’s hope we see the bow tie scene early on. Something for the ladies to look forward to. Grin

I bet Pauline has a complete Cat's Bum Face on and calls her That Pat Wicks Grin in kinder moments

tobee · 20/10/2018 01:14

God that brought a tear to my eye! What a mess those two are. I remember it really well, the walking Ange around the kitchen and the reference to Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine !

The nurse's cap with broderie anglaise on it! None of those fripperies these days.

tobee · 20/10/2018 01:21

Ethel and Dot's bad case of myxomatosis! 🤣

AamdC · 20/10/2018 09:11

He was such an unpleasant charachter Den wasent he , far more so watching it as an adult he has a wife and a girlfriend and doesnt seem to care much about eithet of them and tjen gets his 16 yr old daughters best friend pregnant!

tobee · 20/10/2018 11:37

I looked on wiki last night about the character of Angie. It quotes Julia Smith's early notes on Pearl/Angie's originally backstory. Quite interesting in the light of how it turned out in the actual show.

dingdongdigeridoo · 21/10/2018 11:06

Pauline is so nice in these early episodes. A world away from how her character was just before she died. She was more miserable and mean than Lou!

I was surprised how many things Anita Dobson has been in. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her in a show and recognised her. It seems most of the original and early cast didn’t exactly go on to great acting roles. I think many of them got typecast.
