Fizzy that doesn't surprise me. Until he lost in the French open, they really believed Sascha was going to win it. I think the media pin their hopes on a a certain player, and don't like it when it doesn't go to plan.

Then they wanted it to be to Thiem..

anyone but Rafa, eh

I think Tsitsipas, so far at least, seems to be showing real talent. And has done so on clay, grass, and hard courts. So, not bad at his age.

Pisses me off the 'loses the match' thing .Tsitsipas won the match. If Stefanos was not up to the job, he would have have fallen apart after he lost the the first set.

Yes I agree Raah they are now talking about Zverev instead of the brilliant win by a nineteen year old.

Interestingly they’re also talking about Zverev needing a coach like lendl which I think has been mentioned before.

Which they’d concentrate a bit more on tsitsipas’s win though.

PrivateParkin · 10/08/2018 21:58

Yes I think commentators go on a bit about Zverev - the expectations are so high. I watched a match of his where he lost recently - maybe at Wimbledon - and the commentator was saying "of course, he will win multiple slams in the future" Confused but I mean, there's no guarantee of that is there??

PrivateParkin · 10/08/2018 21:59

Oops posted too soon - obviously he is super talented but there are so many unknowns!!

Raahh · 10/08/2018 22:05

I like Zverev, I do , But really- credit where it is due- Stefanos has just had some great wins. And I really like him. (might have mentioned that).

Last year, the media couldn't wait to crow over the fact Shaggy beat Rafa.

Zverev is great- and (by recent standards) has achieved a few things ,at an early age .But I think he has competition.

Private it's not that long ago that Dimitrov and Nishikori were being touted as the next grand slam winners.

And I really think that ship has sailed. (Might be wrong).

I really wanted Raonic to do well too...

Fizzywinegum · 10/08/2018 22:14

Yes Zverev is definitely not the only potential Grand Slam winner but you wouldn’t know that from recent commentary.

PrivateParkin · 10/08/2018 22:39

Raahh you might be interested to know they were saying that the last 19 year old to beat 3 top 10 players in the same tournament was: Rafa in 2006. So that bodes well!...

The night session doesn't start for another hour. Nadal-Cilic should be good but I think it will be highlights for me...

PrivateParkin · 10/08/2018 23:31

Zverev in his press conference said the match was "pathetic on all levels" and the Tsitsipas didn't play well.
Confused

magimedi · 11/08/2018 07:44

Zverev seems to me to have something of the air of a spoilt brat.

PrivateParkin · 11/08/2018 09:00

Yes, he's had so much expectation heaped on him hasn't he?

With Zverev out and not defending his points from last year, Delpo is now no.3 in the world - his highest ever ranking. Yay! Still waiting to hear if he's confirmed for Cincinnati.

Also: Richard Gasquet has got a new Paire-style peroxide hair/dark beard look Grin

Raahh · 11/08/2018 09:18

private the hair /beard thing must be big in France this season or something!
I agree about Sascha- he has become more arrogant I feel as he has produced results (and he's done well), but you have to learn to take the losses too. The media haven't helped - certainly during RG in the first week, all the talk was about Zverev winning it. You could sense the disappointment when he lost- so they pinned their hopes on Thiem.

Rafa will have been the last to win slams as a teenager too.

Reading about Rafa's match, it doesn't sound like he started too well, probably not his best match- but a win is a win!

I watched the highlights of Rafa's match earlier - Cilic was amazing in the first set, hitting heaps of winners - and then Rafa came back brilliantly. Looked a good match. I would love to see a Rafa-Tsitsipas final but I think Anderson will probably be too strong for Stefanos today - he must be knackered.

JaneJeffer · 11/08/2018 11:11

I'm so happy Rafa won. I stayed up until it was 1-1. I was afraid to check the score!

Raahh · 11/08/2018 13:24

The draw for Cincy is out- and Del po is on that- but that's no real guarantee that he will be there, I suppose.

I hope his wrist is not too bad, and just needed rest.

I need to get a clock, and set it to 'tournament time'.

I have lost count of how many times I have googled 'time in Toronto'.

memory like a sieve

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 11/08/2018 17:42

That's so funny Raahh because I have a world clock on my IPad and I realised the other day that all my locations are tennis tournaments Blush

Raahh · 11/08/2018 17:56

Jane that is what I need. Grin

Before they 'improved' the ATP site (a couple of years ago, but I'mstill not over it), they used to have other clocks on there- as well as just the rolex showing our time.

They don't seem to now, unless I just can't see it Grin

They're chatting about Zverev's press conference. Annabel has some good insight. She thinks Tsitsipas has got under his skin!

Raahh · 11/08/2018 20:16

Annabel is probably right. Sascha wants to be the bright young star, the next big thing- and Stefanos is stealing his thunder this week.

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 11/08/2018 20:22

They also said, which I agree with, that it's refreshing to have someone not just saying the right thing and seeing a bit of rivalry.

JaneJeffer · 11/08/2018 20:23

It's so nice to have Peter Fleming on commentary.

Raahh · 11/08/2018 20:25

It is a good rivalry- there are a few around the same age, Zverev, Shaggy, Tsitsipas, Chung, Tiafoe.

If they all get better, and stay fit- it's an exciting time.

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 11/08/2018 20:28

They've showed an overhead shot of the court. Very vertigo inducing.
