How amazing is Mad Men

Just rewatched it on Netflix and loved it as much as the first time. It's just so bloody incredible I honestly feel a bit bereft. The last episode is so brilliant, no lame endings or feeling disappointed.

I genuinely think it's the best tv ever made. Not sure why I'm posting this as I realise I sound like a gushing mad woman.

It is/was so amazing. That, and the Sopranos. Sure, Big Little Lies was good, but not in the same league IMHO

AsAProfessionalFekko · 16/05/2018 19:41

Not sure what to watch now - it's a bugger when you've binged on a great box set!

AnyFucker · 16/05/2018 19:42

Breaking Bad for you now

prampushingdownthehighst · 16/05/2018 19:42

Oh it was fab, highlight of my week sitting down and watching that weeks recorded episode.....Netflix you say? I can feel a re watch coming onSmile

LittleTipple · 16/05/2018 19:53

Yep, I've just started re-watching! Love the era and it's wonderful escapism. Agree, one of the best series I've seen.

endoftether82 · 16/05/2018 20:02

I've done breaking bad which I loved too, but nowhere near as much as mad men. The depth of characters is insane.

I also loved the wire. Maybe that's worth a rewatch? Not sure if it'll stand up as well though.

I stopped watching it after a couple of seasons, maybe I need to retry.

ShackUp · 16/05/2018 20:04

My favourite programme ever. A series that had a proper ending.

Fave moment was when Don put a copy of Revolver on the turntable and took it off in disgust at hearing Tomorrow Never Knows. So much symbolism!!

mateysmum · 16/05/2018 20:10

You could lock me in a dark room for a week with the Mad Men box set and I wouldn't even try to escape.

It's just brilliant TV. Doesn't treat the audience like idiots, doesn't try and spell out every little plot twist in words of 1 syllable. Lots of periods when you think nothing much is happening then about 3 episodes later you think Ah Ha! now I get it! Little moments that made me get leaky eyes.

And of course.... the great unanswered question....Who is Don Draper?

AnyFucker · 16/05/2018 20:11

Another good rewatch is 6 Feet Under

It's years old but really stood the test of time if you like excellent characterisation

Or Weeds. That is brilliant.

endoftether82 · 16/05/2018 20:17

Oh yes 6 feet under! I forgot about that. It's great, maybe that will see me through this period of post mm malaise.

Watching it now on Netflix, am on series 2. Haven't gone beyond this series yet. Love the complexity of the characters, the writing and generally how well they portray that era, especially pre-feminism. How is it possible to love and hate Don Draper all in the space of one episode?

itstheyearzero · 17/05/2018 08:24

Try Halt and Catch Fire on Amazon Prime. Absolutely brilliant Grin

SorrelForbes · 17/05/2018 08:26

I still miss Mad Men. That and Six Feet Under and Boardwalk Empire are the best TV I've ever watched.

happytobemrsg · 17/05/2018 08:33

I really tried to get into it but couldn't Sad

GingerKitCat · 17/05/2018 17:17

I god I love it Smile Especially Peggy and (controversially) Betty's storylines. And Joan! I wish they'd made more although I'm happy how they ended it.

I've not watched The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, Halt and Catch Fire, The Wire (only S1 so far) so I have some treats in store! I watched Six Feet Under at the time but can't really remember it (rubbish memory) - glad to hear it's good for a rewatch!

I'm watching Weeds at the moment, it's great Grin

raisinsraisins · 17/05/2018 19:40

I also absolutely loved Halt and Catch Fire.

Never fancied Mad Men but maybe I should give it a try. Thought it might be a bit too sexist, but I need something to watch as I keep watching a couple of episodes of series and then giving up.

GingerKitCat · 17/05/2018 20:43

I'd try and watch at least three eps of Mad Men vlose together to get you hooked. I remember struggling with it at first Blush

Fizzywinegum · 17/05/2018 21:14

I love mad men! I’m rewatching it again (all the series) for about the fourth time. My DH thinks I’m mad.

Such complex characters and interesting storylines.

Right now I’m on series 6, episode 7.

ScoobyGangMember · 17/05/2018 21:18

I loved Mad Men. Second best TV ever, after Handmaid's Tale. Will try some of the recommendations on this thread.

Thirtyrock39 · 17/05/2018 21:20

I am watching it for the first time I am halfway through series 4 (1964)
Totally brilliant although I think series 3 will take some beating especially the jfk episode
I actually find roger sterling really attractive
Agree about loving and hating don draper in the same episode - also with Betty

mateysmum · 18/05/2018 08:31

Totally agree that if you are new to MM, you need to watch at least 3 episodes in quick succession. At first it seems like just another glossy American soap and then there is the scene on the train with Don's old army colleague and it's like ... OK ...something strange is happening in Don's life.

endoftether82 · 18/05/2018 18:57

I actually think it's one of the least sexist series I've seen. All the female protagonists are incredible and all March to the beat of their own drum, less so with Betty. Obviously it's within the confines of the period, but even so...Joan is an absolute force.

I really loved Mad Men. Although I haven't met any one in RL who shares my enthusiasm. I was very late to the party with it so maybe that's why.

I loved the characterisation in it, the period detail and just about everything about it.

I also really loved The Wire and Breaking Bad although both were quite traumatic to watch at times. The characterisation was excellent.

I'm so glad I found this post to share the love and get recommendations.

I also enjoyed 6 Feet Under although I don't think I saw all of it. I might try again.
