Just rewatched it on Netflix and loved it as much as the first time. It's just so bloody incredible I honestly feel a bit bereft. The last episode is so brilliant, no lame endings or feeling disappointed.

I genuinely think it's the best tv ever made. Not sure why I'm posting this as I realise I sound like a gushing mad woman.

Mad Men is everything I want in a television series. I loved the story, the Don mystery, the clothes, the sets. The scripts were so brilliant. It's a massive miss for me.

endoftether82 · 20/05/2018 23:14

Yeah Shackup, 2nd season of The Wire was the dicks. So dull!

I loved mad men. My favourite character is Betty. Such a horrible person in some ways but as the series goes on you see why, and how things have played out to make her so. (I also like her clothes :) ). Great acting.

Mad Men is without question one of the best tv shows I have EVER seen. And I’ve seen them all. It’s ok, gush away. The attention to period detail; the characterisation; the authenticity of the storylines. The humour!

It’s fucking brilliant.

hackmum · 21/05/2018 08:30

Another fan here. It was absolutely brilliant.

mtpicasso · 21/05/2018 09:13

I loved it. My favourite programme ever. I fell totally in love with Don Draper.

@MsGameandWatching that blog is so good!

I used to read this blog after every episode and then I would rematch the episode.

I've just got up to The Suitcase in series 4. Perfect TV slightly spoiled by dh constantly wittering about used cars in the background ! I'm having to ration the episodes to one per night now I'm half way through
I really enjoyed that tomandlorenzo blog - also the guardian 'notes from the break room' has reviews of each episode from when originally aired with key quotes and cultural references

fuckadoodledandy · 22/05/2018 15:51

"@ShackUp" re The Wire...Series 3 focuses on politics season 4 is schooling (and arguably the best season) and season 5 is media (and pretty bad but I had to see it through!).

Even when it's bad it's still better than most other shows (but I liked season 2 so what do I know!)

MarshaBradyo · 22/05/2018 15:53

It’s brilliant
I’ve watched it all twice
Used to work in creative industry and some of it is so close
Love Don D’s pitches

deadringer · 23/05/2018 16:39

I am half through the first season and dare I say it I find it a bit dull. I loved 6 foot under and the handmaid's tale is my favorite ever series but so far I just can't get into mad men. I will keep trying though.

Fizzywinegum · 23/05/2018 19:45

I am also a big 6 feet under fan - another brilliant programme with complex characters.

The actress who plays the school teacher in mad men that don has a bit of a dalliance with was at the royal wedding - she’s in suits now.

Rewatching it has made me realise what a complex character Don Draper is - he can be very judgemental eg about Betty and Megan particularly when she had to do a sex scene in her show when his behaviour is very questionable.

Don can also show kindness eg with Peggy and Joan, interestingly two women that he doesn’t try it on with.

Pete Campbell’s character is also very interesting - fascinatingly horrible.

Will check out the blogs and podcasts to further fuel my mad men obsession Grin

WishTheGroundWouldSwallowMeUp · 25/05/2018 18:30

oh I've only just seen this thread.

god, I love Mad Men.

I was late to it, so didn't have anyone to chat to about it, apart from DH but he didn't see all the episodes.

It's the detail, the references, the jaw dropping different social etiquette of the time.

The characters are so well thought out, with great depth. But I really didn't like them at one time or another. Apart from Peggy I liked her all the way through.

I'm going to read through the blogs posted on here, binge watch it again Smile

DarlingNikita · 25/05/2018 18:37

It is astounding telly. I finished watching it recently (I know, a bit late to the party Grin) and by the end I felt just like I would if they were real people and I'd known them for ten years.

The depth and complexity of character is unsurpassed, and the fact that they all do nice things, funny things, silly things, downright unpleasant and reprehensible things; and you don't just like them or love them or hate them. I have complex feelings about ALL of them, just like I do about real people.

It also looks beautiful and the clothes, interiors, cars etc are spot on. And I love how the dialogue doesn't spell things out; it's elliptical and partial, just like real conversation.

It might be the best TV series ever. It's between that and Six Feet Under IMO.

Slartybartfast · 25/05/2018 19:22

the Guardian had a great blog which i read, a bit

dingdongdigeridoo · 26/05/2018 09:26

You’re right Marsha. I also worked in creative and Mad Men is quite accurate! Although most copywriters seem to be women nowadays, there’s still quite a bit of sexism and terrible behaviour. Creative industries definitely attract quite cynical types.

GingerKitCat · 26/05/2018 23:59

I just remembered about the episode with the lawnmower! Shock

There was an interesting blind item from earlier this month regarding #metoo and MW (showrunner). He purportedly sexually harrassed JJ and cut her from entire episodes/ removed storylines/ made her character fat (!) as revenge for turning him down. An exceptional female writer for MM tried to whistleblow and lost her job and her industry standing.

I wondered why Betty seemed to disappear. It coincided with Don moving on (Megan) but I would've loved to have seen more of Betty and her various interactions, particularly with Sally. I heard the role of Megan was meant to be much smaller originally.

WhatMakesYouHappy · 27/05/2018 00:17

So glad to see a thread about this!

I tried to watch it first time round but didn't get into it, and have just finished the whole thing on Netflix.

I get it now! (Yes DP, you were right!)

Agree with everything said above, the characterisation is just spectacular. I felt the last series felt like it was winding down, but I did watch it in quick succession.

Roger is my absolute favourite. Love him.

MsGameandWatching · 27/05/2018 00:46

Pete was my favourite "Christ on a cracker!" and "Hells Bells Trudy!" Grin. I just loved him. Vincent Kartheiser is a stunningly good actor.

MsGameandWatching · 27/05/2018 00:50

One of the most memorable episodes for me was when Don's elderly secretary died. That episode was just perfect. Dons reaction was so well done.

TheDowagerCuntess · 27/05/2018 02:22

Re-watching Mad Men now - and it is even better second time around.

Pete and Trudy's dance scene - epic.

AcrossthePond55 · 27/05/2018 04:23

I just finished re-watching Call the Midwife and was 'adrift' looking for something to (re-)watch from that era. Mad Men it is!

I was a child during the early '60s (a wee bit younger than Sally) and I can remember my mum and her friends in the same styles that Betty & Co wear. And more than once I've seen something in one of the houses and thought "OMG, we had that!". MM is a combination of excellent storytelling AND a trip down memory lane!

Thanks for reminding me!

Fizzywinegum · 27/05/2018 11:54

I also loved the Pete and Trudy dance scene Dowager. It still had me howling with laughter the last time I watched it and I must have already seen it about 4 times!

Thirtyrock39 · 27/05/2018 14:41

Gah at the Megan spoiler!!!! I'm not there yet though was wondering if that would happen
