When she was on the ledge I was shouting at the tv - JUMP! JUMP!

Pleading with Marcella to save us from her - but she never does the right thing.

Please ITV - do not commission another series.

Interesting Marcella was written by Hans Rosenfeldt who also wrote The Bridge.

That also spends every episode but the last throwing red herrings across the decks before coming out with a solution from a previously unknown suspect.

It's a sign of really, really, poor writing in my view.

Like having a 400 page novel devote 390 pages to 3 keys suspects and then in the last 10 pages reveal the killer knew the victim at primary school so was unknown to police but had nursed a grievance over spilled milk for the last 35 years and on the spur of the moment had come down on the ferry-train from Orkney and committed the murder before emigrating to Japan the same evening. They then get caught by sending a confession letter to the police by mistake ... or some other garbage ending.

It really is the epitome of pointless, meaningless.

In fact, Roget should add Marcella to the Thesaurus as a synonym for pointless.

catweasel44 · 10/04/2018 14:50

You didn't like it then!

ScoobyGangMember · 10/04/2018 14:57

What a crock. She'll be the new Joker in the next series, relocated to Gotham.

futuristic1 · 10/04/2018 16:49

@catweasel44 - ha ha

The thing is I did kind of like it. It was a strange kind of pleasure - like holding onto a poo! Although, to be fair, it wasn't quite that good!

Perhaps that's what Marcella was doing too... with her wonky walk.

More like banging your head against a wall and when you stop realising that the alternative, NOT banging your head against the wall, is definitely better.

It had obsessive compulsive quality, mainly driven by Anna Firel's charisma.

I suspect that Hans Rosenfeldt saw the same qualities in here that made Saga / The Bridge a success .

A charismatic female lead distracts the viewer from the Emmental plotting.

I think I started feeling as though I was having my chained yanked by episode 2 and from that point on I increasingly felt I was going to be disappointed.

Like the joy of extended foreplay ruined when your partner gets a cramp just as you're about to get there.

It promised so much but in the end only delivered a truck load of frustration and disappointment.

scrabbler3 · 10/04/2018 19:22

I really like Anna Friel but I'm not sure I'd watch a third series. The storyline was absurd. Such a waste of a super cast.

Lovethebubbles · 10/04/2018 19:25

In the first episode the brother of the girl with the baby, went to a man’s house and said he was going to tell his wife what he did. The man said his wife already knew and he called a child to go and fetch the mother. Who came out and spoke to the brother. This chap was later seen, looking after the boy who was then kidnapped in the car, as his mother couldn’t collect him from school. What was that all about?! What was the brother going to tell his wife? And how was the relevant to anything else? So disappointing!

OnionKnight · 10/04/2018 20:45

Well that was complete shit.

I did notice when Marcella was in hospital with Edward that the fire was on TV in the background.

CuckingFunt1987 · 10/04/2018 21:09

Can someone explain why the police didn't use Marcellas hair and blood in the police station toilet sinks to identify her DNA ? Surely they would realise the DNA they had on file was wrong as the blood and hair was justvleft in toilet sink ? It just doesn't make sense

catweasel44 · 10/04/2018 21:27

Isn't that what they did though but then decided it would be more convenient if they pretended she was dead.

Homemenu1 · 10/04/2018 22:44

Didn’t the police put Marcella dna or the hair in the fire so they could say se was dead but have stilll working for them.

Also why was she being filmed? And who by?

TheSecretMole · 10/04/2018 23:12

From a HuffPost article on the final episode:

“While many will question why some of the loose ends relating to characters including the lesbian couple and the charity boss were not tied up, writer Hans Rosenfeldt explained why there was not a neat ending.

Speaking to HuffPost UK, he said: “People get a little bit like, ‘What happened to that? What happened to this?’ but there’s really no answer. They were in the show for a couple of episodes and once we had no use for them, we don’t really try to wrap it up for them. That’s like real life where you don’t really know what happened to them.

“The episode was very emotional, so hopefully that will take away any element of disappointment. We are very happy with it, and we think it is really, really good.”

What wanky bullshit is this?!? Angry

TheSecretMole · 10/04/2018 23:14

There’s not wrapping everything up and there’s the plot not really making much sense......

ScoobyGangMember · 10/04/2018 23:27

Totally wanky bullshit, I agree.

PrincessScarlett · 10/04/2018 23:34

But all the other characters weren't in it for just "a couple of episodes", they were in all the episodes. The only one that had a low profile was the actual killer. What bullshit!

RebeccaCloud9 · 10/04/2018 23:49

@lou1221 completely unrelated but I keep seeing this and noticed you'd done it twice so maybe you can shed some light - why did you write Samantha mum not Samantha's mum? Do you say it like that with no s? I seem to see it so much at the moment! Thanks Smile

TheSecretMole · 11/04/2018 00:31

PrincessScarlett Exactly. I’m unreasonably angry as I saved the final episode to watch tonight in peace and it wasn’t even bloody worth it!

CuckingFunt1987 · 11/04/2018 11:28

The end still has me baffled ? Iv so many questions and feel such anger towards the writers ! I'm not sure il watch series 3 as I feel we have all been duped from a good ending and we know nothing about what has happened to many of the main characters of series 2 ? Gail's brother and the baby were in every episode bar the finale and I would have loved to have known what happened to him and the baby and if Gail's body was recovered And she had a funeral ? I am so bloody angry and can't stop thinking about it ! I sound ridiculous, but I was hoping for a brilliant finale that made the last 8 weeks worthwhile ? Guess that didn't happen !!!

LassWiADelicateAir · 11/04/2018 13:52

It was set in London wasn't it? A city with a population of what 5/6 million?

*Yet Gail happened to be working in the care home where the murderer's brother lived.

*The father of Gail's baby was apparently the father of one of the kidnapped boys (see Lovethebubbles post 19.25 yesterday)This is (I think the boy found in the boot of the crashed car)

*Becky the girlfriend also happened to be working in the same care home

  • the paedophile just happened to have been seeing the older boy who was a friend of the boy in the boot and possibly the boy himself.

Oh and supercriminal midwife mum managed an arson attack on the garage who had sold the crashed car thus destroying all records.

ScoobyGangMember · 11/04/2018 15:31

God Lass you're right. It's even worse than I realised.

MissEliza · 11/04/2018 15:59

This really doesn't deserve a third series. ITV have cancelled so many promising dramas. I don't even know why it got a second series.

lou1221 · 11/04/2018 17:17

@Rebecca. Seriously? If you really need to know, I use either my phone or my Kindle, and I either don't see the corrections that are needed, or I can't be asked to scroll through basic punctuation choices, when they don't appear as an option. I know how to punctuate, but sometimes after a long day at school (as a teacher, not a student), I really can't be bothered.

LassWiADelicateAir · 11/04/2018 19:06

What about all the unanswered questions? What the hell was the point of padding out the series with numerous characters and storylines that are never explained?

There is a thread in Books just now about Bleak House and Our Mutual Friend. They both have a huge cast of characters some of whom connect with the main storyline - some of whom don't and some of whom never even meet the main characters. Dickens kept the plates spinning on all of them without any sense of padding or missing explanations.

RebeccaCloud9 · 11/04/2018 20:13

It's not the punctuation I'm curious about, it's the missing s

RebeccaCloud9 · 11/04/2018 20:15

It's just that I'm seeing it so often at the moment I wondered if it was a regional/accent thing that people actually say it without the s.

lou1221 · 11/04/2018 21:31

No, I don't say it without, I don't write it with out either, but typing on the phone I just sometimes cannot be asked, and feel lazy. I will try to type correctly in future.
