Did anyone catch this this morning? Same old format and a bit boring. It is long overdue a makeover.

However, I love it Blush

Agreed she wants it regardless even though it is his wage that will be paying for it. And he will have to start his qualifications again so how would that work? Getting a home depends on his salary but no salary until he has completed his qualifications which I assume he will need to be in Australia to do

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 09/01/2018 11:50

I was confused by that, he has the skills but no recognisable qualifications so would they even be able to move?

NancyDonahue · 09/01/2018 12:19

It all looks rather lovely in oz, especially sitting here on a gloomy day, however I would miss the UK lots. I miss it when I go abroad on holiday for two weeks! I love the history here. Love that I can drive a few hours from my home town and be somewhere completely different, different accents, food and culture and even weather! Love that the whole of Europe with even more diverse culture is within easy reach. I think I'd feel a bit trapped in Australia and be hankering after castles, stone walls and ancient stately homes, surviving freezing winters huddling around the open fire and looking forward to spring.

I wish they would go into more detail as to the costs of living.
As a PP mentioned what is the cost of uni education - for an immigrant and a local.
What about medical care, insurance, sports clubs, school fees, clothes, pension considerations etc.
I think there is a lot of interest in living in a foreign country and a different format would be great.
Channel 5 (I think) did a programme where they followed families for a year in other countries - can't remember if any were in NZ or Oz though.

witchofzog · 09/01/2018 15:05

Agreed Cloud . I feel they skirt over many of these really important factors to make good television. They make it look so easy to emigrate when in reality I suspect it isn't

dolfinne · 09/01/2018 15:06

i know its usually a direct contrast with bills but surely things like heating price will differ, you might need air con over there and more water for the swimming pools etc, besides focusing on the cost on the houses and food what about things like car running costs, education, healthcare costs even phone contracts which vary from country to country

NancyDonahue · 09/01/2018 15:59

cloud The channel 5 programme was A New Life in Oz. It was much better as it followed families actually emigrating and a year or so after they got there. I remember one family opened a gym. Really interesting. I hope there will be more.

Watching today's and the cost of living, especially childcare, is much higher but somehow they're going to be better off because there's the potential to earn more. I'm really not sure. Lots of family back home too.

Butterymuffin · 10/01/2018 11:42

Oh and Nicki Chapman is clearly being filmed with green screen and a fake beach background. Can't believe I hadn't seen it before but now I'm looking for it. They must use some wind machine thing to make her hair move as if she's outdoors but she's not there.

NancyDonahue · 10/01/2018 11:47

It certainly seems a no brainer financially today. She's oz born too so should be easier in regards to visa issues the previous families have had.

Butterymuffin · 10/01/2018 11:58

The update for today says they haven't gone though. Boys now in school so less need for childcare and husband has changed job so spends more time with the kids. That sounds like it's off the table.

Pinkpeppermintteaforme · 11/01/2018 11:29

Anyone watching today ?
Seems like she needs to just ditch him!

LIZS · 11/01/2018 11:47

Another family who haven't made the move according to fb. Surely things like uni fees are part of any basic research?

NancyDonahue · 11/01/2018 11:47

Up to the 'Family day out (at a maze) that we can't do in the UK' bit Hmm

He is definitely in charge. I like her. With her great job prospects she could do it on her own!

He kept saying he was open to it but didn’t really seem to mean it to me.

Ok, his wages weren’t as big as he was hoping for but he seemed to totally overlook the much better (reduced) working hours which surely overall would have been as good as a pay rise?

witchofzog · 12/01/2018 11:03

Anyone watching today? I keep looking at Nikki and wondering if she is actually there or superimposed

BrownBiscuitBarrel · 12/01/2018 11:25

I'm watching but delayed by 10 mins.
This series seems to have a longer section at the start with their 'tales of woe' about their shit lives in the UK. Grin
I've been to Wellington - nice place. Nicky has mispronounced Kapiti!

NancyDonahue · 12/01/2018 11:39

The shots with Nikki Chapman are superfluous. A voice over would be quite adequate. I do like some of her dresses though Grin

When Nadia Sawalha presented it she met the families beforehand. I seem to remember they were shown videos of jobs and communities and had a choice where to go.

BrownBiscuitBarrel · 12/01/2018 11:43

It's a bit wet!

BrownBiscuitBarrel · 12/01/2018 11:49

They are showing scenes from Auckland! Mustn't have had enough background shots of Wellington.

Freyanna · 12/01/2018 17:30

I would love a free holiday to New Zealand, in their summer though. I could see them going to NZ as they have no family ties to the UK.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 12/01/2018 18:19

Anyone else think the Australian houses have odd shaped gardens? All weird angles, triangular lawns and oddly claustrophobic?
I went to Australia years ago and would have happily stayed but my visa ran out. But things were cheaper back then, now it seems the housing market is a ridiculous as here. There's a population crisis in Japan, maybe Brits could emigrate there?!

KungFuEric · 12/01/2018 18:24

Caught the end of today's show. I'm not sure if Nikki is superimosed on to that background or notbut by heck she needs some spf and aftersun on her chest!

Freyanna · 12/01/2018 18:44

Sinister - Yes the gardens always seem to small to me, or they have huge front lawns and little gardens at the back.

I imagine they cram in as many houses as possible as most people want to be as near the coast as they can.

tumblrpigeon · 12/01/2018 19:08

Friends of mine went on the show and DID make the move.

Two years of Facebook posts of happy family /happy new life followed.

They are now in the process of a very bitter divorce.

It’s all very sad
