Anyone watched it? Well acted and gripping, James Norton good as usual. Also nice change to see so many new faces. But I'm not sure about watching seven more episodes........

ooh clever ssd, yes I think that's possible - she's just too perfect at the moment!

buggerthebotox · 03/01/2018 15:51

I think she's dodgy too. Deliberately bland. She must also be aware to dodgy dealings in the business world in her line of work (What does she do, anyway?). She seems to waft about a lot, hobnobbing.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 03/01/2018 17:54

The dad has been a (barely) functioning alcoholic for years and the guilt over the loss of Boris has basically just completely broken him. He’s gone up to the roof lots of times before and only JN can talk him down. It’s a combination of not belonging in London/no longer having a successful purpose.

The mum still loves him very much but is basically at the end of her rope coping with the alcoholism/depression.

He’s out of the game entirely. Boris never stopped trying to get back in the game (without much success).

The final reason he wants to kill himself is because he thinks (probably correctly) that Vadim will leave his wife and children alone if he is dead.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 03/01/2018 17:55

I can’t predict if the dads ending will be death, or a happy rediscovery of his love of organised crime Grin

sothatdidntwork · 03/01/2018 18:12

possibly both holdme!

rewatching (I know!) and I think his co-worker is getting suspicious as well - strange look when JN returns from Prague to the dinner party. JN is very bad to drag her into money laundering - she'll end up in prison as well if she's unlucky!

I completely missed the reference to masha being jn's ex - this must mean she has a role to play at some point in the next 6 eps, otherwise what's the point of her?

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 03/01/2018 18:36

I think Masha and the sister will be providing lots of drama in future episodes. Masha could also be a potential Vadim mole.

I think the sister’s role is also to emphasise how British and Not Russian the two kids are. She is actually even more British than JN really because I don’t think JN’s “reserve” is British - I think it’s more of a defence mechanism after a childhood spent being bullied for being a Russian “Yid”.

sothatdidntwork · 03/01/2018 18:39

Ooh maybe the co-worker is a vadim spy as well. Everyone is under suspicion at the moment since obviously (at least) one of them must be.

Cocolepew · 03/01/2018 18:44

I liked it.
I also dont trust the girlfriend.
I'm very disappointed the dad didn't die . He's a PITA.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 03/01/2018 18:45

I think the coworker may play the role of Normal Person who distances herself from JN as soon as she realises what he’s becoming. Especially if Juliet Rylance sticks with him!

Cocolepew · 03/01/2018 18:50

Your username is brilliant 😂

ReelingLush18 · 03/01/2018 18:59

I'm very disappointed the dad didn't die . He's a PITA He's a PITA as a plot device though, surely? Alex wouldn't have had to step up to his role as gangster in training if the dad was ready, willing and able to step into the void/vacuum left by Uncle Boris.

Why are they portraying some of the gangsters/oligarchs as being Jewish? I thought the Jews continued to be marginalised in Russia (the ones remaining after the mass exodus in the wake of the pogroms and subsequent diasporas back to Israel).

Is Masha Kleiman's daughter? I picked up that they'd known each other as children but didn't 'clock' the ex-girlfriend comment.

Wonder whether Kleiman is going to turn out to be the 'good gangster' or worse than Vadim and his allies? And not entirely convinced his motives towards JN are honourable, if indeed there is ever truly honour amongst thieves (and scoundrels).

EllaHen · 03/01/2018 19:41

Cocolepew - I may have cheered when the Dad and the Czech guy died. Boy, did dh laugh when the Dad survived.

Girlfriend is sleekit.

I do find it hard to believe that Kleiman didn't have the brains to suggest to the ex-cop that he takes his boss's place. Are we to believe that he is an economist? And that JN is naturally gifted at Mafia strategising?

sothatdidntwork · 03/01/2018 19:43

Ah Reeling I think you may be thinking of Tanya not Masha? - Tanya is the woman in the nightclub who pretended to the girlfriend that she had known Alex as a child.

Masha, on the other hand, was the briefly glimpsed friend of the sister (Katya?) on the roof terrace - on second viewing Katya was saying 'it was ages ago that you went out with Alex you've got to get over it', or words to that effect.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 03/01/2018 21:58

Masha was also wearing a slinky dress at the shiva.

SavageBeauty73 · 03/01/2018 22:03

I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next episode

ssd · 03/01/2018 22:45

I think it may all turn around and Vadim is actually out to save JN, whilst Klieman is the one who is evil....he's behind the girl trafficking isn't he. And JN's girlfriend isn't on JN's side either. When he realises this he turns to the Russian girl who was trafficked and shown all dressed up at the end, JN and her will be the ones to overturn Kleiman and his evil girlfriend.

I think!!

MsGameandWatching · 04/01/2018 01:21

I certainly hope the trafficked young woman gains some power along the way. I found those scenes very upsetting.

ReelingLush18 · 04/01/2018 07:24

Gosh I think I'm going to have to rewatch both episodes as I have no recollection of even seeing Masha talking to Katya...ssd Although I do recall the comment about the dress at the shiva.

Kleiman, I think, is super clever and gets others to do his dirty work so an arch manipulator (so most likely a helluva lot more dangerous than the brutish thug gangsters). He is most likely 'playing' everyone. Thinking that getting Alex (JN) to plead with Vadim to keep away from his family, is possibly Kleiman buying time to ensure he can get what he wants from him. He's being portrayed as cerebral and cultured, a cut above the others, but surely trafficking innocent people has to be the lowest 'gangster' activity of all???

EllaHen · 04/01/2018 09:03

Ah, so Kleiman played JN? Got him to work out for himself how easy being a gangster was - appealed to JN's ego?

buggerthebotox · 04/01/2018 09:13

Does trafficked woman have a name yet? I think she'll have a bigger part to play, maybe as some sort of spy/mole. Wasn't she picked because she was Russian?

Incidentally, who is swishy-haired woman involved in the trafficking? Is she Kleiman's assistant or something? (I mean Tel Aviv Jewish guy with specs).

And I've completely missed who Masha is.

I think Alrex's colleague is onto him, or involved in some rival activity.

I'm.struggling to fill the holes Sad.

sothatdidntwork · 04/01/2018 09:32

Yes, Masha was definitely blink (or be on mn at the same time!) and you'll miss her and in particular you'll miss what sister said to her. On the roof terrace smoking with sister.

MsGameandWatching · 04/01/2018 09:45

I think you’re right about them wanting to use trafficked woman as a spy botox. He told her he just wanted her to meet some men and listen to what they had to say and she wouldn’t need to do anything else, which is obviously “yeah, whatever!” but the emphasis on listening to them and the fact that his assistant was only interested in Russian women makes me think that’s why.

ReelingLush18 · 04/01/2018 10:07

Does trafficked woman have a name yet? We did see her passport being looked at (from an over the shoulder angle) going into Egypt, so again (in the blink of an eye) could have theoretically clocked her name but I certainly didn't!

buggerthebotox · 04/01/2018 10:35

Yes-she had good English too. I'm trying to work out the trafficking strand-there seemed to be a group of Russians and others. The Russians were the only group chosen by swishy-hair. What happened to the others, I wonder?

I think Tel Aviv Specs man is behind this bit of the trafficking - he's trying to recruit Russian spy girls for some purpose, chosen for their ability to charm men. I think Masha may be a trafficked spy-girl.

Where does Prague Man fit?

When Alex was called to Boris' s to meet Caviar Men, whose voice was it on the message?

MsGameandWatching · 04/01/2018 10:40

Was Alex called to Boris’s? I thought he went there with the hump, to confront him because he found out Boris was the one spreading the rumours about his company. I thought him being there was purely accidental.
