I likeTFC, but I lie Snow and Ashes as well.mi found Echo and more hard going, probably because of all the Brianna and Roger stuff and all the war bits. I wish J and C could just have a bit of peace in their lives.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/03/2018 19:11

I see Tobias Menzies has been cast as Prince Philip in series 3 of The Crown

SenecaFalls · 29/03/2018 19:18

I just saw that, too. I'm an avid fan of The Crown, and I think that Tobias is an excellent choice for Philip.

snozzlemaid · 29/03/2018 20:53

Yes, I think he'll be brilliant as Phillip.

JenMumsnet · 30/03/2018 10:07

He is a good choice for the crown. The last I heard it was that guy in the Avengers. I think he would be much better.

I do miss Black Jack Randall.

gamerwidow · 01/04/2018 09:15

TFC is slow but I think it's a nice change of pace for J and C to be able to stop and settle for a bit and just have a normal life without rape and war and the threat of prison for a bit,

blibblibs · 02/04/2018 14:40

I really enjoyed TFC and went straight into ABOSAA which was also slow paced and more of the same. I think if they do do a season 5 they could probably combine those two books and leave lots out.
Just started An Echo in the Bone and not really enjoying the Willie chapters but I'm sure they're there for a reason.
And I wasn't going to bother after DOA a few weeks ago!

mateysmum · 02/04/2018 20:57

Plenty more rape and war to come!

Spoiler alert!

I think that we see Willie and Jamie almost circling one another before they finally meet. In books 7 & 8, Jamie and those around him keep drifting apart and coming back together again in a new orbit around Himself. I imagine now that Willie knows who is real father is, we shall see more of him in book 9

gamerwidow · 02/04/2018 21:43

Oh I know mateysmum, still it wouldn't be Outlander without a bit of casual rape thrown in.
I think DG's still got a couple of characters who haven't been a victim of sexual assault yet so I'm sure she'll throw something in for book 9.

blibblibs · 05/04/2018 20:50

I've just finished An Echo and quite enjoyed that one too.
I seem to have enjoyed the books that haven't been on TV yet more than the first 3 but I would normally read before watching anything.
Going to miss them once this last one is done, but it should take me a bit longer since tge holidays are coming to an end.

gamerwidow · 06/04/2018 06:37

I think DG has definitely matured as a writer and her later books are better than her first. Book 1 in particular is poorly written and I don't think I'd have continued with it if I hadn't have seen the show first.

MarsaliOL · 06/04/2018 21:19

Oh I disagree. I really think she runs out of ideas in the later books, hence the ridiculous plots.... the stupid plot with LJG for example. She also loses track of all characters and gets things like Jamie's mum dying wrong (in some books he's 6, in others he's 8). Pernickety but there you go.

I like her style of writing but she could have greatly benefitted from an editor.

blibblibs · 06/04/2018 22:30

I agree, reading the last one now and Jamie says he's been in Scotland for a few weeks but Claire was running information for 3 months while he was gone.
There are spelling mistakes and printing errors as well which really annoyed me in the beginning but I've kinda given up caring now.
I don't think I would recommend them to anyone, they're more like a dirty little secret!

gamerwidow · 06/04/2018 22:54

Oh yes she's definitely inconsistent with facts and she's very obviously winging it in terms of plot but her prose is so much more elegant now.

Lessstressedhemum · 06/04/2018 23:59

She famously doesn't plot her novels and openly admits to not remembering her timelineConfused She relies on fans to keep her right, apparently. I think that she is a wee bit like George Martin in that she has lost control of her cannon. Her prose has definitely improved, though. I freely admit that the books are rubbish but I'm not ashamed to own my sad addictionGrin

I've just finished rewatching season 3. It was so good. Sam is a fine specimen of manhood, I could watch him all day and I bet he smells glorious and manly.

mateysmum · 07/04/2018 08:42

Yes, I don't understand why DG's editors have not been better at sorting out the inconsistencies and well.... editing cutting out the odd 1000 pages .
Perhaps like us they are just so swept up in the saga or awed by DG that they are effectively not doing their job fully. The flaws have somehow become part of the whole Outlander cult.
I just pray that she does plan the ending of the series properly and that J & C get the finale we deserve - whatever that is!

MarsaliOL · 07/04/2018 08:56

I want a properly cheesy, romantic ending with Jamie and Claire and no-one else.

OL is definitely my guilty pleasure. I've even been reading fanfic Blush

Lessstressedhemum · 07/04/2018 10:45

Apparently, she does know how it all ends. Or at least sometimes she does. Other times, she claims she doesn't because she has no control over what the characters "decide" to do. I really think she needs taken in hand by her editors, but they are probably terrified she takes the pet because it would lose them so much money.

I hope we get a lovely, peaceful happy ever after ending. I couldn't stand it if one of them died and then the other had to carry on alone. I don't much care what happens to anyone else, but I want j and C to be happy.

blibblibs · 10/04/2018 16:14

This is going to have SPOILERS in it for anyone that hasn't been reading the books, but there is something I really need to ask about Written in my Own Hearts Blood so please don't read any further if you don't want to know or haven't got that far

SPOILER COMING

So, when Roger meets Gellis why doesn't she recognise him? They met back in 1968 before she went through the stones so surely she would have.
Is this just DG not keeping up with herself or am I confusing books and TV, although I'm sure they met in both. It's proper bugging me and I don't want it spoiling my last 300 pages Grin

snozzlemaid · 10/04/2018 16:46

I'm not sure they did meet before in the books. But I'm not 100% about that.

blibblibs · 10/04/2018 16:48

I might have to go and check, it would be Voyager I suppose?

gamerwidow · 10/04/2018 18:06

I don't think they actually met in 1968 he just saw her disappear into the stones with Bree and Claire,

gamerwidow · 10/04/2018 18:07

It would be dragonfly in amber if he did meet her.

Lessstressedhemum · 10/04/2018 18:09

He didn't meet her in the books, only her husband.

blibblibs · 10/04/2018 18:18

Yeah I think you're right gamer. I was remembering her meeting them both in the pub, but that would've been the TV. I remember Bree liking/not liking whiskey too but can't remember which way round. I think I may have read the books to quickly!
