New thread lassies for all things Jamie and Claire (and all things in between).

Only two episodes left! Hope everyone enjoyed episode 11.

Creeps on to thread... Hello Lassies - I read the first book in September and then started watching series 1 on More 4 (twice) and then went full on Outlander obsessed and got Amazon Prime. I have rationed myself to one episode a night (DH working away!). I've also read all the threads as I've gone along and you've all added so much to my enjoyment.

But I didn't love series 3, i felt it lacked a sparring partner for J&C (like BJR) and a proper sense of peril. Also whilst the cinematography is still beautiful I missed Scotland. Maybe it just needed 16 episodes I don't know. I suspect a lot of my disatisfaction stems from a lack of Murtagh. I'm not a massive Jamie fan, I like men to be monosyllabic and hirsute so M is made for me. Why on earth did Claire not ask about Murtagh or at the very least reference him? Did I miss something?

Can you tell me - will Series 4 have a decent bad 'un and lots of Murtagh action?

Marsali · 15/12/2017 17:30

There's a bad bad un in S4. Murtagh is an unknown! He died at Culloden in the books, which was why Claire never speaks about him. Jamie didn't speak about it to anyone.

However TV Murtagh was shown going to America, but very ill. So he may or may not survive!

CB was apparently given the job two weeks before she started. I think she was trying so hard to keep the accent up, and then once she had that she could really act. She's vvv beautiful Envy

That's fascinating, I didn't know that. I agree about the accent - it still irritates me a bit now but in season 1 it sounds so overworked. Her acting definitely improves (whereas Sam is perfection right from the off).

Right, I will sit down and watch S1 E1 over the weekend and not just skip through to my favourite bits, hello Sam on a horse

Notonthestairs · 15/12/2017 17:41

Ah, thanks Marsali - that explains the lack of talking about Murtagh. Am going to have to hope the scriptwriters bring him back next year

I might start reading Drums of Autumn to fill the void.

VeganIan · 15/12/2017 19:23

There's one scene in S1 E1 where CB sounds very Irish - in the guest house when she's checking in with Frank.

LonelyOversharer · 15/12/2017 19:48

CB wasn't really an actress either was she? Catwalk model iirc. She is beautiful indeed, but if I watch any of the endless interviews on you tube she always seems very normal looking. Whereas Sam is very classically trained I think, so was an actor straight off the bat.

I love the earlier s1 episodes. Especially in rent where she wakes up with freshly permed hair one morning! The continuity has got a lot better. The thing that has always annoyed me is Claires voice-overs. I know it is what happens in the book, but most of this stuff we really can work out for ourselves. And why does she still have the clipped queens English accent? You live in America for 20 years, you pick up a bit.

I fancy that Sam sometimes sounds welsh s1 at Leoch when he's talking about Alec seeing his back. I might have watched them a few too many times!

Murtagh must be taking Innes' role, and can marry Jocasta - then we can bin some batshit unnecessary book 5 plot lines.

LonelyOversharer · 15/12/2017 19:51

Oh I watched Being Human first time round on bbc3. Aiden is immensely beautiful in it! I sadly gave up on Poldark after finding Outlander. It's like wood in comparison, very pretty Cornish wood, but rubbish (beautiful lead actors aside).

ToniMumsnet · 15/12/2017 20:23

I just binged season 2 of 'The Crown' in an attempt to placate the droughtlander. Now it's on to Godless. Which is different.

I still have 2 seasons of Black Sails to go, but I am trying to ration that a bit.

I just don't know if Steven Bonnet can match BJR. I mean he was just so good and so evil. It was quite something. But Bonnet, I just never felt the peril and excitement when he appeared that you got with BJR.

Hopefully it will be better when adapted for tv.

breadwidow · 15/12/2017 21:05

Agree with everything people are saying on this thread so v interested in your recommendations for droughtlander viewing

I discovered outlander this summer after bing watching poldark and looking for something similar and of course it ruined poldark for me. I'll check out being human tho, I do like aiden t

I'm currently rather enjoying godless

I think I may ban myself from watching any outlander til at least the end of Jan and then watch my fave season 1 again

quirkychick · 15/12/2017 21:18

I've seen season 1 of the Crown, not got round to 2, I'm still on Season 3 of Vikings.

I'm not going to reread the books, I binge read them over the summer Grin. I might reread the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles, as Less said, they are similarly addictive, bonkers plot and dodgy violence/sensuality (not sure what that says about me...).

Hello, Notonthestairs I started with Season 1 on More4 too, then Amazon Prime. Slippery slope.

Marsali · 15/12/2017 22:35

I may get lynched for it but I think SH has improved too, at times he was a bit Joey Tribbiani as someone else said!

The accents/ idioms used by the Scots make me cringe/ laugh at times too. The first season could go verra Brigadoon at times ye ken! Wink

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 15/12/2017 23:04

The thing is, SH is best at the deep emotional stuff, the really heartfelt scenes.
He's OK at the lighter stuff.
It's the inconsequential reaction stuff that he goes Joey on! Normally when someone says something important and Jamie has to show "so that means....." on his face.
Pure Tribbiani

MoNigheanDonn · 16/12/2017 07:04

I'm now going to be watching outlander and thinking of Joey! Grin

I watched Godless and I loved it! Brilliant mini series, highly recommended.

Agree with everyone re Poldark. Season one was OMG but after watching outlander it looks like too soapy. I still maintain that Eleanor Tomlinson would have made a PERFECT Brianna

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 16/12/2017 10:00

"Clairrrrre Rrrrandallll.... How a ye doin'?"

MummaMinnie · 16/12/2017 11:50

Hi lassies of Lallybroch - hope this is OK to post here, if not then maybe admin can remove. Some developer wants to build right next to Culloden Moor but there is a petition against it. If you feel this is wrong then please sign it.

Hi MummaMinnie, totally cool by me to post here. I will sign.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/12/2017 13:37

Yes, I've seen that before. I'll sign too.

Signed!

GrimDamnFanjo · 16/12/2017 16:05

I've visited Culloden and it made a huge impression on me. The centre is well done but the battlefield is awe inspiring.

GrimDamnFanjo · 16/12/2017 16:12

Just looked at the protestors website. How could anyone think building homes there is appropriate?

quirkychick · 16/12/2017 17:33

Signed.

LittleDorritt · 16/12/2017 18:47

Nothing will ever beat season one and no baddie will ever match BJR but I have high hopes for Stephen Bonnet, and I can't wait to see Frasers Ridge. I can't believe we have to wait nine months Sad I have just ordered Echo from the library to try and plug the gap for a month at any rate.

Lessstressedhemum · 16/12/2017 19:51

I signed the petition before, when I saw it on Facebook. I cannot believe that anyone thinks that is an appropriate place to build Sad.

Cait has improved beyond all recognition, but her accent still rips my knitting. It's the way she says "Jam-eee" that does it. No one in real life says it like that, it's Jam-ay, without much emphasis on the second syllable. Sam has improved as well, in fact I think that they all have, but he was already a trained actor with loads of theatre experience. The difference is glaring in season 1. He is sooo hot in season one. He just IS Jamie Fraser. He became him for me in the first episode when he cornered Claire in the woods. It was like he'd stepped out of the pages of the book and taken flesh. That piece of casting was incredible. I think with Cait, one of the main reasons that she got the role was her chemistry with Sam, which was obvious from the very beginning apparently.
