It's good to see that the scrptwiter's aren't afraid (of DG!) to change from the books.

I admit that I can't be arsed to read the later books but have spent way too much time on the Outlander fandom wikia site which saves me having to bother.
This way I can follow what happens later.

FRankly, DG should have been a writer on Eastenders. It's all angst and pain and quite soap opera-ish

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 14/12/2017 12:36

Sorry - the above makes me sound like a right miseryguts.
I guess I can't get over how much I enjoy the program considering how really irritating the books were.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 14/12/2017 12:47

I know what you mean breakfast I feel the same. I love, LOVE this show but there are also some things about it that I can't stand.

I do think the show runners are in a no-win situation though. They have to follow the general plot lines of the book, yet book readers are still complaining that they leave loads out. And non book readers are 'wtf?!' some of the silliness and that's with the worst of DG's excesses toned
down.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 14/12/2017 13:28

I just think how much useful work has been denied to unemployed editors by DG (and George R Martin!), and much better their books could have been!

mateysmum · 14/12/2017 14:51

I agree that the end of Voyager is way too long and convoluted and a bit bonkers. I confess I skimmed it when I read it. Pity as the first half of the book is great. If you think the drums/voodoo/Mr Willoughby bits on TV were bad - stay away from the book.

Marsali · 14/12/2017 18:46

The storyline is just mad to begin with.

Jamie and Claire going off to seek their fortune in the New World would have been quite plausible and would have provided a very enjoyable storyline with Jamie being seasick, recovering, sex, some pirates, Claire being a doctor, sex, getting to America... it could all have been so simple instead of the madness it descends into.

quirkychick · 14/12/2017 20:43

Omg mateysmum so true, the drums/voodoo/Mr Willoughby plot line in the books is waaay more convoluted and implausible. The show tied it all together much more neatly.

AKAmyself · 14/12/2017 20:49

sorry if my post sounded so whiney. im having a terrible time with work and i think anything would have disappointed me last night.

I am planning a rewatch of season 3 in its entirety... i think I am going to love it a lot more

AKAmyself · 14/12/2017 20:50

but in the meantime it just dawned on me that droughtlander has started :( what to do with myself now?!?

MoNigheanDonn · 14/12/2017 21:13

Sophie Skelton/Brianna is on set in Scotland. She posted on her Instagram story a video of the crew in the Christmas gear today.

oooo didn't know there was an outlander thread. hello all.

Yes this season has been a bit stupid so far.

Dead Geillis is very obviously a wax work. A very very bad one. Like a chinese Madam Tussauds attempt.

DryWhiteagainW · 14/12/2017 21:45

Well, I’ve enjoyed S3 more than S2. Actually that’s not quite right. France in S2 and New World in S3 are bonkers. We’ve said it before on here, but it’s all much better when they’re in Scotland. Fraser ridge is more or less Scotland so it does settle down later on.

What do we do now? Leaky Blinders/Vikings and the promise of Poldark are keeping me busy .

madamefraser · 14/12/2017 22:31

Ilotuouooououot

MoNigheanDonn · 15/12/2017 05:53

You alright there madamefraser 🤣

Oh, DryWhite I've finished Black Sails and am now on Vikings. I need to catch up on Peaky Blinders too. I think there may be a theme going on here...

JuneFromBethesda · 15/12/2017 11:13

Was it Courtney who suggested that we all go back to the beginning and watch right from the start, with commentary here? I like that idea Smile

I'm in denial that we have another nine months to wait. Again. I'm a Poldark fan too but was disappointed by the last season so even the promise of more Aidan Turner isn't particularly consolatory. Grump.

AKAmyself · 15/12/2017 12:24

I started last night! With season one episode one.

Stray thoughts:

Caitriona Balfe really couldn’t act! She was SO bad it was almost funny. Amazing improvement through the series.

Sam was so effing hot it almost hurt my eyes. I think he was slighter, with less muscle, and looked so much younger. Also - great great hair.

I just realised that Claire wandering through to the jungle in “Heaven and Earth” was a clear throwbCk to the opening epi where she runs through the forest to escape the redcoats.

Scotland was so beautiful and magical. There’s no replacing that.

The show was funnier and lighter. I actually laughed out loud (for the millionth time) at the “I’m a nurse” and everyone looking at her boobs moment.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/12/2017 12:36

Yes, I think I'm going to start from the beginning again. Do you think we'll be able to ration ourselves to one a week though? 😬

Agree about CB not being able to act in S1. She was friggin' awful and nearly put me off, but I love her now. In fact, she's so awesome and elegant I think I have a bit of a girl crush on her.

The show was funnier and lighter

Do you think that was because the first season was longer epsiode wise but shorter content-wise, IYSWIM? Subsequent seasons have been less episodes but they are having to pack more storylines into less time due to DG's bonkers plotting and character development is perhaps suffering.

quirkychick · 15/12/2017 12:58

The books themselves are really quite funny, as I recall. Putting more plot in does take some of the chance for witty dialogue away.

AKAmyself · 15/12/2017 13:01

Ps totally different genre but have you all watched Being Human? I got into it after Poldark and It really, really made me love Aidan turner to the point of never being able to enjoy Poldark again

quirkychick · 15/12/2017 13:26

Oh, yes. I watched Being Human before Poldark. Aidan Turner does good vampire Wink.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/12/2017 13:30

I loved the first series of Poldark. Then I watched Outlander and Poldark pales in comparison.

I think the casting on Poldark is good, but the scripts are quite bad. I don't know whether it's money constraints or what, but the decision to cram two books into 6 (?) episodes was just a ridiculous idea. I'm dreading what that production team are going to do to Pride & Prejudice if that ever comes about.

quirkychick · 15/12/2017 14:33

Aidan Turner was also Dante Gabriel Rosetti in a bbc series about the Pre-Raphelites too.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/12/2017 14:42

I loved Desperate Romantics. Shame there wasn't a second series.

quirkychick · 15/12/2017 15:58

That's what it was called! Yes, it had Amy Manson in as well.
