Alan seems reasonable most of the time but he does have a short temper so assume it grows from that? Haven't watched today's yet but assume that Hilda will be leaving next week at some point?

Littlepleasures · 23/02/2018 21:18

Alec’s reaction to seeing Hilda’s ‘muriel’ and ducks for the first time was hilarious. Superb acting and comic timing. What a treat these old episodes are!

Carol1 · 24/02/2018 02:10

Yeah there much better than the current ones which I have fast forwarded for about 2 years now, Bet talks down to everyone and thinks she's God's gift

Carol1 · 24/02/2018 02:19

@HelloGabriel

Alan is only after Rita's money it's all an act..can't believe the actor is 90 now!

Kikashi · 24/02/2018 09:43

Littlepleasure I agree. I loved that last episode of the week with Alec seeing the "muriel" and Vera's mother causing mayhem, I'm really warming to Vera (she used to terrify me) and the Mavis and Derek situation irritated me back in the day but I think it is very funny now. Really cheered me up watching it this morning with my breakfast.

southeastdweller · 24/02/2018 09:54

Hilda's last episode is next Wednesday.

HelloGabriel · 24/02/2018 11:37

Just found out he's married to Audrey in real life! No way Grin

Carol1 · 24/02/2018 20:59

Yeah they been married for years apparently

BelovedMutant · 25/02/2018 11:11

I don't think that Audrey looks much different now from when she did then! Same hairstyle probably. Grin

Mavis and Derek really annoy me, everything is a major drama! Calm down.

Kannet · 26/02/2018 16:17

Well I'm trying to catch up. Pc Bellamy robbed the lothers, ruined heartbeat forever lol

He ended up homeless in Emmerdale so I guess that was his punishment

Kannet · 26/02/2018 16:46

That's all right then. Was worried he got away with it then lol

Dr Lowther was one crap actor.

ChevalierTialys · 26/02/2018 18:26

Alan mentions money really often, I've noticed, but it's so low key that you really wouldn't realise he was after Rita's money. I've only really noted it because of already knowing about the storyline. They played it so well back then.

BelovedMutant · 27/02/2018 16:35

Love Amy, she keeps saying that Percy is undressing her with his eyes! Grin

Kikashi · 27/02/2018 17:06

Love Hilda and Amy's zip front ankle boots. My granny had a pair - they were so comfy - they were lined in sheeps wool.

What do you all think of Hilda's exit?
I never liked that she went to be Dr Lowther's servant/housekeeper - better to have gone with Sally's Uncle Tom. I also disliked the "sainthood" of Stan in Hilda's recollections who I remembered as a horrid bully and being really nasty to Hilda.Although, I have known several elderly people whose spouses are elevated to saintliness after they die.

scrabbler3 · 27/02/2018 19:01

Stan was a layabout and Hilda had a difficult life. I too wish that she had married the kind and hardworking Tom and enjoyed a comfortable retirement, rather than skivvying for some bloke who's too grand to make his own toast.

CoolCarrie · 27/02/2018 21:00

Hilda definitely should have married Sally’s uncle, it would have been lovely for the character have security and a good man, as Stan was a lazy sod and a chancer.

southeastdweller · 27/02/2018 21:14

I was reading in Jean Alexander’s book that she disliked the Tom story. The only post-Stan story she liked was when Sally and Kevin lived with her.

Tara336 · 27/02/2018 21:17

I’ve been watching this and Dynasty and I’m shocked at casual sexism and homophobia in them. I wasn’t that old when they were on so it’s a bit of an eye opener

scrabbler3 · 27/02/2018 22:21

I didn't know she'd written a book. I must read it! Jean Alexander was big friends with the actor who played Stan. Maybe she found it odd to have a new onscreen relationship.

Can't believe tomorrow's her last ep. I was a kid in the 1980s and didn't appreciate how talented she was. Likewise, Thelma Barlow.

BelovedMutant · 28/02/2018 19:02

Mavis's reaction when Derek asked her to 'give herself to him'! Grin

These episodes are so much funnier than the modern ones. Wonder if they will show classic emmerdale farm?

Kikashi · 28/02/2018 19:30

Had a tear in my eye at Hilda's leaving party. A lot of warmth. In current Corrie Hilda's exit would probably involve Pat Phelan strangling her to death for being "a nosy old bat".

Loved Hilda's final bit of gossip - telling Alec that Mike had lived with Bet at No3!

cloudyweewee · 28/02/2018 19:55

I'm also loving Derek and Mavis. I'd forgotten just how popular trench coats were in the 80s!

scrabbler3 · 28/02/2018 21:21

It was great to see the key cast all assembled for Hilda's party - most of them, anyway. Betty was missing, and Martin. Jenny was upset at home.

A smaller cast with fewer twebtysomehings would work for me in current Corrie.
