GBBO - opinions?

What are people's opinions on the new Bake Off so far? And yes, I know we're only a few minutes in. IMO the new presenters feel a bit like they're trying a little too hard to be Mel and Sue.

Opinions?

It is still exactly the same duration (baking wise) as it was on the Beeb. Conscious of the criticism of 'the ad breaks have dwindled the actual minutes of baking', C4 extended what was normally a 60 min slot to an hour and 15 to allow for the ad breaks.

woodhill · 27/09/2017 13:24

I think the last ad break is unnecessary and is too much

TrashPanda · 27/09/2017 13:39

Recording only works if you have the equipment needed which we don't. If you watch on catch up you still have the adverts. I know the actual baking time is the same but with the adverts it breaks it up making it harder to get stuck into I find. If I recorded it I would still have to whizz through the break which would still mean a break.

RhiannonOHara · 27/09/2017 13:41

If I recorded it I would still have to whizz through the break which would still mean a break.

Good lord. It takes me a few seconds to whizz through each break. But anyway, if you don't have recording equipment why even moan about it? It was just a light comment. Confused Grin

TrashPanda · 27/09/2017 15:55

I'm sorry if you felt I was moaning about your comment, I wasn't.

I was saying that the breaks in the continuity of it cause me to feel like I'm less focused in the programme and that I find it harder to keep my concentration which in turn means I'll miss bits so don't get to 'know' the contestants.

I still enjoy it and I will watch the whole series as the rest is as good or better than on BBC. I think I'll also bow out of the thread too as I've obviously missed an etiquette to these sort of long running threads.

BiglyBadgers · 27/09/2017 15:56

On the bright side the ad breaks give me the chance to go to the loo and get more biscuits Grin

Theycalledmethewildrose · 27/09/2017 16:39

Trash Me too. I feel like I'm in the Channel 4 building on this thread!

FiveBoys · 27/09/2017 17:03

I totally agree about Steven, purple. He is clearly amazingly talented, but a tad smug. This week might have done him some good though. He is still the one to beat but it isn't looking like such a sure thing anymore

I did laugh when he was standing there feeling all warm and cosy after they clapped his trifle only to then be told what they thought of it.Grin

RhiannonOHara · 27/09/2017 17:19

Steven is a bit style over substance. I have to admit I quite like when he mucks something up. Blush

I'll miss James, but I think he was reaching his limit, ability-wise.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 27/09/2017 20:44

I don't think the contestants are particularly better or worse than previous years. They all seem like nice normal people (even if Steven is a bit smug).

blueskyinmarch · 28/09/2017 07:32

I still like it and I think I like Sandi and Noel better than Mel and Sue ( sorry!). They seem more natural somehow. My DH is enjoying it this year and he has always been a a bit meh about it. My favourites are Liam and Julia.

ppeatfruit · 28/09/2017 11:59

My DH is too! blueskyin I think the ex'soldier girl' (sorry I can't remember her name) with the long dark hair will win but she's not my favourite. I haven't got one really, Julia is interesting! Liam is a bit babyish!

Toddlerteaplease · 28/09/2017 22:23

I hate the advert breaks but love the adverts with the talking cakes! I prefer Prue to Mary but Pail is really irritating. As is Steve. What did they say about his American flag jelly?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/09/2017 08:20

I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying it -I sat down with A Face On, determined to complain all the way through, and the old one I can't e arsed with the the one they didn't change . . . Beardie.

I do miss Mel and Sue - I liked them - but I also like Sandi, and Noel is just delicious. He''s so cute - when he ate the chrysanthemum . . . Grin

Prue is MUCH nicer than MB.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/09/2017 08:38

Apparently Sewing Bee will be back next year. I follow Jade on Facebook and she's posted that it's definitely back next year

Next year?!

NEXT YEAR?!?!?!?!?

Could be bloody dead next year!

I want it on NOW!!!!!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/09/2017 08:39

*only one I can't be arsed with - not old

LoniceraJaponica · 29/09/2017 08:49

“My favourite contestants were Howard Who Worked For The Council”

One of my friends used to work with him and says he is lovely. I saw him at the WI 100 year celebration show in Harrogate a couple of years ago. He sat near us on the train on the way home, and my sister said it was obvious he was listening to our conversation and finding it interesting.

“There aren't any clips showing the contestant's personalities”

Those are the bits I find boring. I’m more interested in the baking than the people.

“I don't agree that it feels like a completely different show. I HATED the Beeb losing it and was all set to loathe it on C4, but I have to admit it seems the same to me and I'm enjoying it.”

Same here. I think there are more laugh out loud moments in this series. We always watch the recorded version and fast forward through the adverts. As it was originally a BBC show I bet more people record it than watch it live just to miss the irritating advert breaks.

BiglyBadgers · 29/09/2017 09:06

I watch it on catch up (I don't have a TV so can't record) and on one episode got personalised adverts! It completely freaked me out when suddenly the computer started saying my name and trying to sell me stuff. It did particularly annoy me that the ads where for yoghurt and cars when I am lactose intolerant and can't drive. If you are going to start being all personal at least try and sell me something I might vaguely want. Wink

ppeatfruit · 03/10/2017 12:54

Oh Bigly I'm giving up a lot of stuff on my computers now, they drive me mad with changing things all the time. The things are soooo annoying.

bookbook · 03/10/2017 20:02

well, going to watch this in real time for the first time :)

bookbook · 03/10/2017 20:04

anyone else? I do love a pie

BiglyBadgers · 03/10/2017 20:09

Unfortunately I have to put a child to bed half way through so always watch on catch up. I am mulling over whether to stay up and watch it tonight or whether to save it for a birthdays treat tomorrow. Decisions, decisions! Grin

Biggreygoose · 03/10/2017 20:33

I'm still liking it.

I don't like that every contestant seems to be auditioning for their own cooking show all. The. Freaking. Time.

bookbook · 03/10/2017 20:39

I do like those Portugese tarts - well done they are heavenly ( but I do really like custard tarts any way :).
I'm liking that a lot of the stuff is not too extraordinary

bookbook · 03/10/2017 20:43

ooh, I actually make hand raised pies with hot water pastry !
