CAUTION - HERE BE DRAGONS (PROBABLY) AND SPOILERS!

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 7 "THE DRAGON AND THE WOLF"

Come and discuss the very last episode in the penultimate series, airing August 27th at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6.

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones.

Nice foreshadowing between Jon/Theon about being both a Stark and a Greyjoy. Betting they use that argument to secure the loyalty of the North 'I'm still a Stark, just with a Targaryan name.' Exciting stuff! Wahoo to Bran and Sam teaming up as the resident clever clogs. The sex scene between J+D still made me squirm a bit uncomfortably though.

The wall coming down, crikey o'reilly's pants. THE WALLLLLLL, TORMUUUUUND. He needs to make babies with Brienne yet, he can't possibly die. Although i'm now angling for a love triangle with Tormund, Brienne and Jaime. And it looks like she is going to make friends with The Hound. Maybe it'll be a love-square.

Littlefinger got what he fucking deserved. I wonder if we'll learn from Bran just what Littlefinger's real motives were? The only thing missing from that scene I think is why he really started the war. Was he aiming for the Iron Throne for himself?

CeeBeeBee · 28/08/2017 08:37

Well, I'm gutted that we'll have to wait another two years for the final installment. I was really worried that Jaime was going to die right there. The execution of Little finger was very satisfying.
Did anyone else think that Rhaeghar would look different to Viserys? I'm sure they just reused the same wig on another actor.

RhinoGirl · 28/08/2017 08:43

I think they did, not how I expected Rhaegar to look.

Very satisfied with Littlefingers demise! I think he started it all thinking he would finally get Catelyn and they could rule together.

And the dead are finally marching south....

CeeBeeBee · 28/08/2017 08:44

Another thing, didn't Rgaegar already have a son named Aegon? Why would you reuse it?

AdalindSchade · 28/08/2017 08:52

Aegon was rhaegar's brother

CeeBeeBee · 28/08/2017 08:59

Aegin was Rhaegar's son with Elia Martell. His siblings were Viseeys and Daenerys.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 28/08/2017 08:59

In the books it's pretty clear. He was fostered by Hoster Tully as a child but was from relatively low birth and a very minor house. He was in love with Catelyn Tully as a boy but she was betrothed to Brandon Stark. He basically had no chance with her as Hoster would never have married his daughter to someone from such low birth.

In a fit of madness, he challenged Brandon Stark to a duel in single combat. Petyr was something like 13 at the time and got utterly trashed by the older Brandon. He could have died of his wounds. He was never allowed to see Cat again and was sent back to the Vale in disgrace by Hoster. He never got over the humiliation and bitterness. Despite his intelligence and wealth, he would always be seen as of low birth and poor breeding. He therefore has set his sights on destroying a system that he sees as unfair to him.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 28/08/2017 09:02

CeeBeeBee why Lyanna would name her son Aegon when Rhaegar already had a son called Aegon is a mystery. It's a bit yuck in my opinion.

I have heard speculation that the show never mentioned that Rhaegar's son with Elia was called Aegon but that's not true. During the Hound's trial by the Brotherhood in season 3 the names of Elia's children - Rhaenys and Aegon - were specifically mentioned.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 28/08/2017 09:03

I did laugh very loudly when Jon said he would never make an oath he couldn't keep. I think he forgot about Ygritte and that cave...

I do like the foreshadowing that without dragons the Targaryans were just ordinary. I can see Dany having to find her way as a ruler without dragons.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 28/08/2017 09:08

I reckon Euron is the Valonqar.

PetyrBaelish · 28/08/2017 09:22

Got a bit of a sore throat now.

Even though I like Jaime, I got excited thinking Cersei was going to kill him, it would have been unexpected and a lot has been spoiled or predicted this season.

Since the boat sex had been spoiled for me beforehand I was sittng there chuckling at Jorah's futile attempts to prevent it.

The dragon shooting an ice beam felt a bit Pokemon. Wink

Middleoftheroad · 28/08/2017 09:49

Just when I thought Cersei's hormones were making her all soft and fluffy. BAM!

Did you see how excited Qyburn was over the moving zombie hand. Whack that on The Mountain and you have Gregorsteinwalker.

I like Jon, but honesty isn't always the best policy

Loved the Sansa LF twist

Bit fed up of obvious cock and fuck off jokes at start. It's like Carry on Fuckin Thrones.

By far my favourite scenes were Tyrion and Cersei and Jaime riding (to Brienne? Even though he didn't give her much time - The Hound and she had a chemistry too. Then there's poor old Tormund) as snow falls.

That and a blue fire breathing undead dragon.

SenatorBunghole · 28/08/2017 10:07

That was awesome. I even forgive them how daft last week was now.

AdalindSchade · 28/08/2017 10:09

What have they gained now though from the grab a wight expedition? Jaime has ditched Cersei, but he's not taking the Lannister banners with him. They lost a dragon and gained fuck all.
Though ultimately this may be what sets Jaime on the path to offing Cersei so I guess it will all fall into place

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/08/2017 10:13

I loved that from start to finish. Absolutely gutted that we might have to wait more than a year for series 8! I'm not known for my patience. Maybe I could volunteer my non-existent skills to help speed the whole thing up. Hmm

Very satisfying scene at the end there with LF. I'm not surprised you have a sore throat now, Petyr! May be beyond the powers of the NHS to sort out for you, I'm afraid. Grin

I loved the blue dragonfire.

Sam was fantastic. So glad we saw him again.

Do you think Bronn will follow Jaime? I hope so. I don't think he'd be safe at KL.

I would put money on Tormund and Beric surviving to S8. I think if they'd died it would have been made obvious. They are big enough characters to merit that, and somebody needs to get the news out.

As for the incest, well. Very icky but I do wonder if there might be another plot twist to come that will somehow make it OK. The only thing I can think is that Daenerys wasn't the Mad King's daughter. I think her mother was the Mad King's sister so she would still be a Targaryen, hence the hair etc etc. There was a very long gap between Viserys and Daenerys. Is this even vaguely plausible? I haven't read any of the spoiler threads and it's a while since I read the books, so I can't remember if I'm missing something obvious here.

AdalindSchade · 28/08/2017 10:23

I think Jon and Daenarys will conceive a baby before they find out who he is. So what they feel about it may be irrelevant if they produce a Targaryan heir

WingMirrorSpider · 28/08/2017 10:32

The incest thing doesn't really bother me Blush

Obv. IRL it would, but this is fantasy set in a mediaeval type world where cousins getting married is completely normal (I know this is aunt/nephew but I think this has precedent in history too). Also J & D have only recently met so it doesn't have the icky factor of Cersei and Jaime, (or Jon and Sansa which some internet randoms wanted after they found out they were 'only' cousins). I think the whole growing up together then getting together is what makes it so weird, but J&D haven't had that.

On another note going beyond the wall seems now like a really bad deal. Yes they got the wight and Cersei has been convinced of the threat from the north, but she's doing bugger all about it. In exchange for giving the NK a dragon which has enable his army to pass through the wall, all they've really got is Jaime. Great strategy Grin

OneThingAndThenTheNext · 28/08/2017 10:35

Really enjoyed that episode, I've tried to avoid a lot of spoilers/theories so much of it was a surprise! Sat with my mouth open during the dragon and the wall scene. Tormund 😰

I'm thinking the sex scene was meant to be unsexy, maybe they both realise on some level it's incestuous? I think that would bother Jon!

BossyBitch · 28/08/2017 10:35

I think that too - her saying she couldn't have children had a distinct Checkov's gun vibe about iy.

But, yuuuuuuck! The poor kid would technically be so inbred that it'd make the Habsburg dynasty look like paragons of responsible breeding in comparison.

On the upside: Dany not being able to have children should technically be the logical consequence of her already being inbred AF - so maybe no blood magic involved after all.

A nerd may hope ...

DispatchReady · 28/08/2017 10:37

Wow just watched! So many good things:

Loved Browne and the Hound talking about Arya like proud parents! He even smiled!

Cersei is completely nuts but my goodness Lena Headey is a phenomenal actress!

Jon and Dany - hmmm felt a bit ick especially with Bran voiceover explaining him being a Targ!

Loved Bran and Sam - I'm the 3 eyed raven, ooh that's nice...don't know what it means!

Ooh LF - amazing that Arya killed him just as her mother had been killed -really laughed at him begging for his life - Grin -glad the Stark girls are on the same side.

Jaimie - thought he might have been killed off for a moment! Hopefully Bronn will join him - there's been a few hints that he'll switch sides.

I can't see Tormund and Beric surviving the wall coming down - surely not? Hope so but blimey that was pretty brutal.

Not sure what Tyrion was thinking when Jon and Dany were together.

Yay Theon but does he even know where Yara is? Love the way the iron born just switch loyalties and shout for whoever!

Definitely need to watch again!

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 28/08/2017 10:38

I loved that episode. Clearly they put the dialogue budget into it!!
Btw undead viserion must have been (surely?) breathing blue fire rather than ice to bring down the wall?

Who wants to place bets on which is ready first - S8 or TWOW? Grin

BossyBitch · 28/08/2017 10:38

A tenner on s8

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 28/08/2017 10:39

I read something about why Jon is aegon when there's already an aegon, but I can't remember whether it was a theory or a claimed leak, so I'm wary of sharing. Will have to check the "all spoilers" thread first!

SenatorBunghole · 28/08/2017 11:21

The bit at the start confused me. Jaime and Bronn are at Highgarden? Then they come to the capital, are the Unsullied etc supposed to have escorted them or something? Grey Worm hasn't really done a lot this series other than cunnilingus.

AdalindSchade · 28/08/2017 11:28

They were on their way from highgarden to kings landing when Daenarys attacked 3 weeks ago so presumably they made their way back to kings landing after that
