CAUTION - HERE BE DRAGONS (PROBABLY) AND SPOILERS!

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 7 "THE DRAGON AND THE WOLF"

Come and discuss the very last episode in the penultimate series, airing August 27th at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6.

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones.

OP posts:

JPTB Nooo, not Cersei!
Sansa, yeah, get her the fuck gone, but not Cersei.
I mean, we don't want her to rule or anything, but we need her around for Shia and giggles. And her fabulous head tilts.

3EyedRaven · 03/09/2017 14:41

Shits and giggles

JPTB · 03/09/2017 17:01

Yeah, I'm done with Cersei.

Aridane · 03/09/2017 17:33

Sorry- I don't mean to sound utterly frivolous- but when I see Cersei all I can see / think of are lip fillers and dreadful hair Blush

Trills · 03/09/2017 19:24

I expect that in the books people will be arguing about it too. It's an interesting point.
Who will be on the side of "Robb assumed Bran and Rickon were dead, he didn't mean to disinherit them"?
And who will be on the side of "The will says Jon is heir. So he is"?

AryaUnderfoot · 03/09/2017 19:40

Trills you are right and it is all part of GRRM's social commentary on the unfairness of the system of inheritance in feudal societies.

In particular, why should Sansa be completely disinherited from her home because she was forced (as a 12 year-old girl) to marry her families enemy? What is fair about that?

GRRM has stated in interviews that one of the few families that really took care of each other in their own bizarre way was the Freys. Even the most minor family members was entitled to part of the family income and a right to live on family land. This is in stark contrast to the Cleganes where the elder brother murdered the father and inherited everything - leaving the younger brother with not a penny.

Trills · 03/09/2017 19:50

Speaking of Sansa being 12, wasn't Rickon about 3 or 4 when all this kicked off in the books? Will he even remember his family?

AryaUnderfoot · 03/09/2017 20:01

Yes, I think Rickon would be about 6 or 7 at the very end of the ASOIAF timeline (assuming it is still 3 years). He was 3 during AGoT.

The likelihood is that he'd be totally wild after spending his time being raised by Osah and the wildlings/cannibals of Skagos. He was always the wildest of the Stark kids and Shaggydog was the most wild and untamed of the direwolves. I definitely think he has an important part to play in the story yet to come and, if he does die, it's not going to be because he didn't zigzag!

Trills · 03/09/2017 20:12

Definitely not.

Has anyone on this thread read The Wheel of Time?
The author died leaving a lot of notes and a couple of books needing finishing, so another author stepped in. (he knew he was dying, it wasn't sudden)
Sort of similar to how D&D have certain plot point that they need to hit, but have to figure out how to get there themselves.
Anyway, Brandon Sanderson did a fantastic job IMO. It can be done.

AryaUnderfoot · 03/09/2017 20:23

I've never read the Wheel of Time, but I may give it a go. I did make a conscious decision not to read past the first Dune novel and something similar happened with that series.

The problem is that D&D just aren't up to it with the writing. I know I'm probably in the minority for thinking this season was pretty crap, but I felt the quality of the plot, character development and dialogue were lacking.

Calling the show fan fiction at this point is actually an insult to some fan fiction writers.

Trills · 03/09/2017 20:32

Warning: Wheel of Time is 14 books long, and around 6-8 drag a bit. Then the author realised he was ill and he had to try to wrap things up, so things get moving again.

It's fantastic for mentioning small details that become significant later on, if you like that sort of thing.

Trills · 03/09/2017 20:34

I enjoyed this season, but that's not the same as thinking it was well-plotted. Much of the stuff I enjoyed falls into either "plot points that needed to be hit" or "cheap hits of joy for people who discuss the show on the internet". (they may be cheap but they still hit the spot)

AryaUnderfoot · 03/09/2017 20:36

It's fantastic for mentioning small details that become significant later on, if you like that sort of thing.

I'm only slightly obsessed with ASOIAF, so I guess I do like that sort of thing!

I might give it a go to while away the years waiting for Winds of Winter!

I am reading WoT. Book 10. Going slooooowly. Ha, needs lessons from Gendry and the ravens!

MarvellousMonsters · 06/09/2017 20:19

This is really interesting:

Also, I really miss GoT. Sad

BossyBitch · 06/09/2017 21:07

I know I'm probably in the minority for thinking this season was pretty crap, but I felt the quality of the plot, character development and dialogue were lacking.

If you're in the minority, there's at least two of us.

I really enjoyed the 1st half of episode 4 and quite a lot of the finale - the rest of the season was really pretty meh. Also: plothole galore. And Magic 8 Ball Bran. And that cringeworthy, clearly written by a man chat between Dany and Missandei about whether or not Grey Worm still has his penis.

But I think operation Kidnap a Wight was the worst by far. I've come up with plans smarter than this while high as a kite.

BrawneLamia · 06/09/2017 22:32

There's a science fiction novel called the lord of Light, the copy I read had a quote on the back cover from one Georges R R Martin saying that it was his favourite science fiction novel of all time.

Help! Didn't we have a thread for spoilers somewhere? Do we have somewhere to discuss theories and spoilers for S8? Is anyone even up for this?
