New thread ,as we are very close to the end of the other.

I'm in denial that it is nearly September.

I am looking forward to Flushing Meadows. I feels like ages ages since I was able to 'watch' any tennis.

I have no idea who Dean Gaffney is .....:)

Fizzywinegum · 09/09/2017 13:12

Thanks guys! I managed to not find out the result - had a bit of a TV, radio, internet blackout. Also went to my yoga class all the time wondering who had won.

Just finished watching it now - are we allowed to talk about the result yet?

Book Dean Gaffney was in Eastenders years ago - not sure what he's up to now. Sorry not sure if you are in UK so not sure if that means anything to you Smile

I think it's safe now Grin

I did think Delpo would put up more of a match, but Rafa was just too good on the night. And I think Juan was very tired.

I would have been happy with a Delpo win (especially if he then won the whole thing)- but am thrilled for Rafa.

I think it may end up being the another one sided slam final, really. Only Aus has really been a decent one this year. Which is good in a way, as it means I will probably see it all. I can't see it being very long. I might be wrong.

Shania Twain is on Strictly! Clearly this is her comeback tourGrin.

she's not great

The 1st set was great but DelP looked very tired by the end. Still, pretty good to get so far. Really annoyed that I missed the mixed doubles today - would have like to have seen Hingis/Murray.

Looking forward to the women's finals tonight but can't stay up late. Uni Open day with DD tomorrow.

Raahh · 09/09/2017 20:52

i think Juan himself is very pleased to have got this far- he seemed to be on the up this time last year, then injuries took hold again. I think he's glad o have been in the position again.

ladies final. that was the loveliest EVER post match before the trophy ceremony thing Ive ever seen.

Sloane and Keys sitting together chatting away, besties, huge embrace at the net before, no posturing or preening or big headedness a- la Serena and most others, just lovely.

pity Keys couldnt have done a bit more though in match. but good nonetheless, and what wonderful speeches from both players.

THATS good role modelling.

QuiQuaiQuod · 10/09/2017 20:22

oh and well done Murray/Hingis. good doubles pairing. at least a Murrya won it this year! Grin Tennis

Raahh · 10/09/2017 20:44

I am really looking forward to tonight, even though it is unlikely to be a classic.

I just need to stay awake. it's been a long day

Looking forward to the final - hope it's a good match but not sure if it will be. I just think that being in a grand slam final for the first time can be so nerve wracking that some players crumble under the pressure - Anderson's been around for a while so we'll see.

Actually hoping it's not too long as I'm a bit tired but would like to see a good match.

Fizzywinegum · 10/09/2017 20:53

Ooh Rafa is wearing a sleeveless top for practising - very nice Grin

Raahh · 10/09/2017 21:05

Kev and Rafa have known each other since they were kids, but Anderson has never beaten him.

Cash is admitting the bottom half of the drawer had no-one it it.

I have been reading a lot, and there are people saying Rafa has had an easy draw- but his has been because he seeds he should have met, lost.

I find the American singing and stuff very cringy.

Dh is sat here- he grew up in the States, until he was 11 (American dad)- he hates it too

OP posts:
Raahh · 10/09/2017 21:12

I do like Kev. He's a really nice bloke.

OP posts:
Raahh · 10/09/2017 21:15

Oh - Rafa is wearing a black -shirt. He's been wearing a pink one all fortnight.

I don't like changeGrin

OP posts:
Fizzywinegum · 10/09/2017 21:17

Yes he does seem like a nice man - also don't like the God Bless America singing stuff.

There are hardly any if the top 10 players in the tournament so I dont think they can say that just one player has had an easy draw.

Raahh · 10/09/2017 21:22

Fizzy quite. As tournaments go, this has been wide open with the big names out. I am still pissed off that Murray pulled out when he did- with Roger on the bottom half, it would have evened things up a bit.
Kevin has done well to get here, and I'm chuffed for him that he has his chance.

but I don't want him to win

Wilander has a good slam win /loss record considering he only played 11 final, and won 7.

OP posts:
bookbook · 10/09/2017 21:48

well, will try to keep up as long as possible to read the live texts - doubt I can stay up for all of it though , I'm a lightweight :)

Raahh · 10/09/2017 22:01

Kev is holding his own so far... but I'm no sure ow long it can last.

OP posts:
Fizzywinegum · 10/09/2017 22:07

Yes he doesn't seem overwhelmed by the occasion which is good but not sure how long he can sustain it.

Looks like it could go on for a long time.

jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 10/09/2017 23:22

2 sets down and Anderson picks out an angle from nowhere.

Raahh · 11/09/2017 06:53

Well, the first set seemed to go on for ages ( as wilander kept sayingGrin) but it seemed a done deal one Rafa had the break. Unfortunately, after 2 sets ,I fell asleep- but I lasted longer than I thought I would!.

Woke up( again) to Eurosport and an annoying advert at 3.30Grin
Very pleased for Rafa, but it would have been nice to have more of a fight( even if it's not good for my nerves).

OP posts:
Fizzywinegum · 11/09/2017 08:37

I only managed to watch the first 2 sets Raahh and they seemed to take ages. I went to bed thinking it was unlikely that Anderson would come back from 2 sets down.

Well done Rafa - he's not too far behind Roger now with overall number of grand slam wins.

bookbook · 11/09/2017 08:39

well done Rafa - just seen he won, and it looked a very comfortable win

Raahh · 11/09/2017 09:03

Well, there's still 3 slams between them, but in theory Rafa has more time on his side. If RogBot hadn't had his 2017 reboot this year, it would have been a different story. I think Rafa was unlucky with his wrist injury last year- at RG he was just starting to play like his old self.

I'd like to see him win in Australia again. Then he will complete the '2 of each slam' set. I doubt either Djok or Roger will win RG again, (Well, Novak might , but it's a long shot). So he's the only one who can do that.

And that's the last slam. This year is flying by- I swear I only watched Australia last week Grin.

OP posts:
BagelGoesWalking · 11/09/2017 09:23

I also feel asleep after 2 and a bit sets as well. I woke up at 2.30 and went to bed without bothering to check who'd won as it was pretty obvious Rafa was going to be the victor.

Can't believe now fast this year's gone. Had been down in Southampton with DD for a uni open day. This time next year, all things being well, she'll be off to university!!! 😧😭
