Sorry to be a downer - ignore my comment if you don't want to read one long whinge - but I just can't enjoy this season like I did the others. The dialogue is awful - it's forced and stilted. So many of the characters have become almost two dimensional. Arya's scenes make me cringe, when she used to be my favourite. The Hound is reduced to saying "cunt" and "fuck" at regular intervals - he used to be one of the most quotable people on the show. Even when a scene is good, I just think how much better it would have been done in a previous season. Did they fire most of the writers to employ more CGI artists? Seriously, I feel like they could have pulled the scripts from a GoT fanfic on archive of our own. They don't even put any effort into killing off characters who have come to the end of their storylines. It's hamfisted and lazy, and it's making me cross!

eyebrowsonfleek · 21/08/2017 03:37

Just watched it.
Loved the banter between the Suicide Squad.
I forgot about Benjen Stark. I wondered if Gendry had returned.
I'd guess that Jon will be named her successor but she didn't want to say that she fancied him out loud even though she ended up giving it away to Tyron when she mentioned his name in conjunction with her other lovers.
Do you think Little Finger was Arya in disguise when Sansa got help from him? Who were the masks?

AdalindSchade · 21/08/2017 07:23

Arya can only use faces after she kills the person so she couldn't be wearing littlefinger's face. The masks were walder Frey and someone else she killed

AryaUnderfoot · 21/08/2017 07:38

InvisibleCities I totally agree with you. This season is competing with 5 for being the worst one. The characters have taken massive steps backwards in order to make way for witty meme-generating comments. The Hound is probably the biggest casualty of this. When I heard the line "I prefer chicken" back in season 6 I had a sneaking suspicion that he was going to become the comic badass, and it has come to pass. It's such a shame. What a waste of a great character and talented actor.

Arya's actions don't make any sense. Whichever way you try to cut it with the 'she's just playing Littlefinger' you end up down a dead-end of illogical behaviour. The only option left is that she's batshit crazy psycho-girl, which I don't think was the original intention. The writing is just dreadful.

Operation grab-a-Wight was so bad. There were so many holes in the storyline. The only thing you can say in its favour is that it looked spectacular. The fact that the 'event' had to be finished off with Benjen as deus ex machine kind of speaks volumes about how bad things have got.

D&D should have just passed the series onto someone else if they are that bored with it.

christmasunicorn · 21/08/2017 11:37

Why on earth would Arya keep Walter freys face? The whole of westeros knows he's dead, he's an incredibly well recognised man. If he started walking around winterfell or kings landing that's going to get people a bit suspicious. It's just crazy she would keep a face that she will never be able to use.
It's details like this that are starting to get to me

ElspethFlashman · 21/08/2017 12:42

Cos she's just a cookie cutter psycho now?

I agree 100%. Aryas dialogue is atrocious. That endless story about her Dad watching her fire a fucking arrow and giving her the "That'll do, pig" nod.......I lost the will, I swear.

Oh and did you know women don't have the same agency as men in Westeros? You somehow missed that over 7 seasons? Well here's Arya to laboriously spell it out!

NoodleNinja · 21/08/2017 13:11

Just rewatching and had wondered the first time why Sansa sent Brienne to King's Landing bu now it makes sense. She is having a convo with LF and they are saying Brienne is sworn to both sisters so would have to intervene if one planned on harming the other. On first watching I thought maybe LF was saying keep Brienne close and Arya can't hurt you but now I think they are saying get rid of Brienne so Sansa/LF can kill Arya.

I do like Sansa though, I am rooting for her to support Jon but also think she has a point in thinking that Winterfell should be hers. Bran is T3ER and Jon is a bastard as far as everyone knows so Winterfell should be Sansa's.

And I do like Jon Snow but he's just a bit.......wet. Maybe it's the actor but I struggle to see how he should be King above Dany when she has had such a journey and has a great following for good reasons.

Here's my theory: Jon and Dany will fall in love and marry. He will stay King in the North and she will rule the rest of the 7 kingdoms. She will fall pregnant and think it's by some miracle but maybe it's to do with both being Targ? By the time the secret is exposed she will give birth and die in the process, leaving Jon king of everything.

Ijustwantaquietlife · 21/08/2017 13:54

I think Danny dieing in childbirth would be a very poor ending. Surely that's pretty common there anyway.

More like Danny having to be killed by John to defeat the knight king. I'm convinced someone will kill Danny in the final. Maybe herself.

John I wish would die, I'm bored of him and hoped he'd be gone last year.

I'm hoping for a good death next week, missandrie is top of my list.

Where is Yara?

AryaUnderfoot · 21/08/2017 16:25

My ideal ending would be that Jon would die heroically and Dany would give birth to his baby. She would then decide she really can't be arsed with being queen because it's not actually what she wants (she wants her house with a red door and a lemon tree). She will then go off to live a quiet life somewhere and the iron throne will go to a legitimised Barattheon bastard (Gendry in show and Edric Storm in books). He will realise he has no ruling skills and will establish a much stronger and more competent small council with Tyrion, Sansa and Sam on it. All dragons die.

It's never going to happen though, but it's a nice dream.

summerdaysgain · 23/08/2017 09:25

From post above: "I have seen her described as a 'whore' for her concealment of the truth about the Trident incident; she was an 11 year old girl FFS!"

What was the Trident incident?

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 23/08/2017 09:51

The Trident incident was when Arya and Joffrey had their 'fight' by the river (Trident) which ended in Nymeria biting Joffrey's arm and Arya throwing his sword in the river. Nymeria and Mycah then fled (and Arya in the books).

Later Sansa tells Ned what happened (Joffrey attacked Arya and Mycah). Even later, Arya is found and brought before Robert and Cersei who have been told by Joffrey that they attacked him.

Sansa is then brought before them as witness and claims she can't remember what happened (oh how very typical of a cornered 11 year-old).

As a result, Lady is sentenced to death in Nymeria's place. The Hound later returns with the body of Mycah.

As I said, I have seen her described as a whore for 'siding with Joffrey'. I have also seen her blamed for the death of Mycah, which is just plain rubbish. The main person to really have suffered from her lying is herself - her direwolf was killed and what little affection that remained between her and Arya was destroyed.

NoodleNinja · 23/08/2017 11:52

If someone could go ahead and leak the finale that would be great.

I really, really can't wait til Monday. Every day I switch on my laptop and hope one of the headlines on the facebook ticker thing is about another leak.

God I am sad.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 23/08/2017 12:37

I'm just looking forward to some 'credible' leaks for S8 backed up by outdoor filming locations. I probably win the prize for the least patience in the thread and for being the most sad.

squishysquirmy · 23/08/2017 12:42

I loved the scene with Dany by Jon's sick bed. That may have a lot to do with topless Kit Harrington
I thought that she did seem very upset by the dragon death, but not in an over acted way. I don't think it would fit her character to be weeping and wiling and tearing her hair out by this point in the series; she has already witnessed the death of loved ones (including smothering zombie husband herself).

I agree the incesty bit between her and Jon is a bit ick, but they don't know they are related and she does have a very hot nephew.....

InvisibleCities · 23/08/2017 20:06

Anyone want to answer some Shag-Marry-Kills? (I'm bored.)

  • Joffrey/Roose Bolton/Meryn Trant
  • The Hound/Davos/Tormund

These are the most challenging ones I can think up Wine

NoodleNinja · 23/08/2017 22:01

Holy shit that first one is so hard!! I'd have to shag Joffrey, Marry Roose and kill Meryn, they're all horrible but I couldn't shag Meryn once I knew he liked little girls so I'd have to shag Joff and put up with Roose Bolton for marriage (as he seemed like he wasn't too bad to Walda).

The other...... Kill The Hound, shag Tormund and Marry the lovely Ser Davos.

NoodleNinja · 23/08/2017 22:03

Oh forgot to do one

Shag/Marry/Kill....

Ramsey Snow/Bolton, The mountain, Viserys

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 23/08/2017 22:10

First list:

Marry Meryn Tant. However, he's technically Kingsguard who can't marry so I can then run away and join the silent sisters and avoid all the others.

Marry The Hound. However, he's technically Kingsguard who can't marry so I can then run away and join the silent sisters and avoid all the others. Can I shag him before the annulment?

InvisibleCities · 23/08/2017 23:43

Tsk, I should have known you'd find a loophole Arya Grin

Yours is harder Ninja!! I would kill The Mountain (if I could), shag Ramsey (in a safe controlled environment preferably), and if I survive both those encounters I suppose I marry Viserys and just be miserable forever?

I rewatched #6. I'm still arsey about the plotlines and dialogue (and some shonky acting that is probably down to poor direction/the shoddy dialogue) but the cinematography, CGI, score, and action scenes are consistently excellent. And I suppose we should be grateful that D&D at least are willing to wrap up the story, god knows if GRRM ever will!
