Not enjoying this series anywhere near as much as previous ones. It's so rushed. They could have got at least two series out of what's happened so far in this one.

The time frames don't add up and everyone is acting out of character. There's been no build of a romantic relationship between Jon and Dany until the last episode and after Arya's speech to Sansa, I want to drop kick her over the walls of Winterfell.

TheHiphopopotamus · 18/08/2017 07:06

I quite like Sansa though Blush

And this...

The final nail in the coffin was at Comic-con last year when she said she would like to see Littlefinger on the iron throne

is surely a bit of misdirection as there isn't a hope in hell that Littlefinger will win the Iron Throne in my head, anyhow.

AryaUnderfoot · 18/08/2017 07:36

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's disappointed with this season. I think it's turned into a series of spectacular events joined together by scenes of shitty dialogue which emphasise all the deficiencies in the weaker actors, and the best-loved characters have become caricatures of themselves. I read a comment somewhere that the series is now best watched as a bunch of 'best of' clips on YouTube, and I'm starting to agree.

My thoughts:

Dany wants to 'break the wheel' ie the Westerosi system of a monarch supported by ruling families which took turns being top-dog depending on who was in favour/had the biggest army. What does she want to replace it with? A fairer system, ruled entirely by her. She has always proved to be a great conqueror with the aid of her dragons but an utterly shit ruler. She doesn't listen to advice unless it agrees with her (as proved this episode) and her track record in Slaver's Bay of 'conquer and move on' proved disastrous. The freed slaves wanted to sell themselves back into slavery because they were better off. But no, it's time to move on to Westeros - where there is no slavery.

Shame on you Jon! The Northern Lords are not going to be happy about this - they have already seen one King in da Norff marry a non-Westerosi woman with disastrous consequences and they're not going to like the idea of another. In their minds, the 'dragon queen' is just another foreign invader. A Jon/Dany hookup looks all but inevitable at this point.

AryaUnderfoot · 18/08/2017 07:45

I quite like Sansa though

I love Sansa - mainly the book version though.

GRRM in an interview said that Sansa is at least as intelligent as Littlefinger. It was her destiny to surpass him as she has personal qualities (such as empathy and compassion) that he lacks. His judgment is clouded by bitterness.

The problem is that until recently Sansa had shown very little intelligence in the show. However, Sophie continues to maintain what a 'badass' she is in interviews. Lots of viewers find it very jarring and off-putting - particularly involving a character who so many people already dislike.

I tend to stay away from discussions about Sansa on groups like freefolk on Reddit as there is often more than a small hint of misogyny in discussions about her. I have seen her described as a 'whore' for her concealment of the truth about the Trident incident; she was an 11 year old girl FFS!

brieandcrackers · 18/08/2017 07:49

Agree that this season could have easily been split into two - we used to just have one or two "wow" moments per episode but now it seems like we have five or six in an attempt to fast forward the plot before the dreaded collapse of the Wall.

As it's largely focused on the threat in the North It's very much becoming the Jon & Daenerys Show and we're seeing absolutely nothing of characters like Euron (who seemed like he would be a vital player at the beginning of the season) or the other Greyjoys - would be nice to have an update on Yara at some point!!

3EyedRaven · 18/08/2017 08:01

I'll be really gutted if the white walkers simply walk around the side of the wall, on the frozen water.
What's the point of having g a big fuck off wall like that, if we don't get to see it tumble down.

Re: Jon looking like Ned, I'm sure it was a Tyrion chapter, it said something along the lines of 'he had the look of the North. Whoever his mother had been, she had left little of herself in him.'
Obviously doesn't mean anything on the first read, but jumped out on the reread.

AryaUnderfoot · 18/08/2017 08:08

From my reading of the books, Jon and Arya both have 'the Stark look' about them - long faces being the thing that stands out. Arya is lovingly called Arya Horseface (totally the opposite of round-faced Maisie). However, it is commented that Arya resembles Lyanna in looks as well as temperament.

I think the other Stark kids all favour the Tully look but I can't remember too much about the book description of Bran. Does he have auburn hair in the books?

3EyedRaven · 18/08/2017 08:09

Yes, all the starks have auburn hair and 'Tully blue' eyes (As we're told repeatedly by Cat), except Arya and Jon, who have dark hair and grey eyes.

3EyedRaven · 18/08/2017 08:11

I'd say, just by that, that the Tully looking Starks won't make it.
Only the Stark looking Starks

AryaUnderfoot · 18/08/2017 08:19

I'd say, just by that, that the Tully looking Starks won't make it.

A year ago I would have agreed with you. Now I'm starting to think that Sansa may live to the end of the series. It's Jon that I'm most doubtful about...

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 18/08/2017 11:48

To be fair to Dany I am sure lots of monarchs have refused to discuss a successor if they don't have children as it creates a rival.

TheHiphopopotamus · 18/08/2017 12:10

Elizabeth I was one such monarch. She didn't declare an heir until she was on her deathbed.

BeyondQueenOfLists · 18/08/2017 13:45

If asoiaf is based on the war of the roses, I wonder who the red headed queen who does many great things but never marries or produces an heir will be? I can only think of one person who fits that... Wink

Aridane · 19/08/2017 21:00

Can someone explain to me the whole white walkers thing? And who is the tall one with the white javelin thing?

And will the reanimated dragon still spit fire?

Aridane · 19/08/2017 21:00

Oh - and another thing - what was that tree bark / stone skin spreading thing?

QueenoftheAndals · 20/08/2017 07:04

The tall one is the Night King, who makes all the white walkers. Have a google for the GoT or ASOIAF wikia.

Peakyblinders · 20/08/2017 09:31

Well I watched it last night and I loved it! Sure you have to suspend your belief and forgive the directors of certain things. But it's GOT !!!! It's gorgeous and visually stunning and I loved it! Hope they leak the finale!

QueenoftheAndals · 20/08/2017 09:36

I'm always a bit suspicious of these "leaks" but I doubt the finale will fall victim to them!

Peakyblinders · 20/08/2017 09:59

But I watched the leak?? In HD !!! there was nothing suspicious about it and I DO think we'll get the finale early !Grin

QueenoftheAndals · 20/08/2017 10:18

No I meant suspicious as in I don't think it was accidental!
