Tennis Tennis Tennis

I'll stick my neck out & say Fed to win the mens' & Carolina Plisshkova (sp?) for the womens'.

OP posts:

It would be out of character for Fele to be a bad sportsman. All the Spanish players give their utmost.

Raahh · 04/07/2017 20:22

Jane I don't know why, collectively, the young Aussies seem so entitled, but they do. and it doesn't help when the commentators keep treating Kyrgios like some misunderstood child. Sue Barker seems to be nearly as much too big-up Nick, as she does Murray Grin.

thereallochnessmonster · 04/07/2017 20:22

Yeah - he seemed to be playing well. Wildly, and hitting lots of balls out, but nothing seemed to be sore. Just watched the last few games so don't know what went on before, and I don't know him.

thereallochnessmonster · 04/07/2017 20:22

Kyrgios is just a spoiled brat. Nothing nice about him at all.

GrouchyKiwi · 04/07/2017 20:36

I wonder if their elite sport academy has something to do with it. All that money funnelled into you at a young age.

What's CockandSackers like?

bookbook · 04/07/2017 20:42

sheepishly creeps onto thread - have only just found time to watch the Today at Wimbledon programme on now...

Raahh · 04/07/2017 20:50

I get the feeling Cock and Nackers could be as bad, he is a little arrogant at times, but he has been out injured for quite a bit, so I haven't seen too much. Maybe he has a less sycophantic team around him.

Raahh · 04/07/2017 20:50

evening book Grin

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/07/2017 20:55

Lopez was really struggling. He gave it his all. No question from anyone (apart from the reallochnessmonster Grin) that there was any bad sportsmanship at all. I think he actually played well beyond what he should have done because he was so devastated by the idea of retiring.

Kokkinakis seems to be better bred than Tomic and Kyrgios. He was not happy to be dragged into the furore over Kyrgios's sledging of Stan a couple of years back, and rebuked Kyrgios for his behaviour. And he definitely put up a good fight against Del Potro this afternoon.

I really don't understand all the fangirling (from Sue Barker and the men) around Kyrgios. When the Wawrinka thing happened, Rafa said (with all the gravity of his then twenty nine years) that Kyrgios's youth was no excuse, subtly pointing out that he'd been on the road since he was about sixteen and never behaved like a twat (my paraphrasing of Rafa's more discreet words).

GrouchyKiwi · 04/07/2017 20:55

~waves at books~

Haha, I knew I had that wrong. And yeah, I thought I hadn't heard about him for ages when his name came up today.

bookbook · 04/07/2017 20:59

evening ! :)

Raahh · 04/07/2017 21:03

TheOnly I know, it's not just SueGrin but she's been doing a lot the last couple of days. And yes, Thanasi wasn't happy about being dragged into the Stan thing- which again they blamed on Kyrgios being young, even though he was about 20 at the time, not a little kid.

Lopez probably did far more than even he expected at Queen's- and that must have taken it's toll on him. He played so well there. He will want to be able to keep playing- so won't want to take chances in a match he was going to lose. it's a shame though. l like Lopez.

Raahh · 04/07/2017 21:06

One hing is certain, there is no danger of Kyrgios ever winning the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award.

Not fit to lace Stefan's boots! Grin

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/07/2017 21:08

Hold on. Hold on.

How did I not know that there are TWO Zverevs?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/07/2017 21:09

I'll get my coat Blush

Raahh · 04/07/2017 21:09

They are brothers Grin

GrouchyKiwi · 04/07/2017 21:10

Shock No wonder I was confused when the man I thought was called Sasha was referred to as Mishka!

Peregrina · 04/07/2017 21:16

It seems both Djokovic and Federer are questioning the rules around not pulling out when injured.

Raahh · 04/07/2017 21:19

I really wanted them to be related to Natalia Zvereva from years back, but they aren't Grin

And seeing Navratilova before reminded me that today is Pam Shriver's birthday. I always remember, because it's American Independence day.

Raahh · 04/07/2017 21:20

Djokovic is a hypocrite then, as his early career was spent pulling out of matches when he was injured.

bookbook · 04/07/2017 21:23

the quote from Bernard Tomic Shock - why on earth is he still bothering to play?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/07/2017 21:24

The younger Zverev is cute.

And also twenty. Which means I am old enough by some margin to be his mother. Am off to google the older one - I am only just old enough to be his mother!

TENNIS THREAD - Wimbledon starts tomorrow!!
Raahh · 04/07/2017 21:25

Rafa up 3rd on Centre, which is good, but I have to go out at 6.45- 7pm for an hour. Which might be in the middle of the match if tomorrow doesn't go like today. Grin

Raahh · 04/07/2017 21:26

Nice hat. Grin

Raahh · 04/07/2017 21:28

as for Tomic, book well, if people are willing to pay him, he's happy to turn upp, it seems. Bored or not. Hmm.

I'm sure it was Dan Evans who was actually fined after a match a couple of years back (that he won, I think) for not trying hard enough. Maybe that should happen more.
