Tennis Tennis Tennis

Am most excited & thought the grass needs a new thread.

I'll stick my neck out & say Fed to win the mens' & Carolina Plisshkova (sp?) for the womens'.

Raahh · 04/07/2017 21:31

I've just googled, and it was in qualifying for Wimbledon 2015, he basically threw the second set. The umpire wasn't happy, didn't think he put in any effort (he lost it 6-0) and he was fined £13,000. Which is pretty steep, really. And probably quite a lot for him at the time.

bookbook · 04/07/2017 21:33

its just so unfair on the paying crowd though - along with all those pull-outs' for injuries . It must be gutting for those paying good money having it happen .

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/07/2017 21:57

I read the post-match interview with Federer - he suggested to Novak that they go back out to Centre Court together and played a practice set. The crowd would have loved that Grin

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/07/2017 22:00

Oh look - Kyrgios has also been fined and suspended in the past for tanking in a match. Aren't we surprised, said no-one ever.

Ironically, that was also against Mischa Zverev. He must be a bit "WTF?Hmm" about the Aussies after today as well!

magimedi · 04/07/2017 22:03

I am old enough to be Zverev's granny!

Something needs to be sorted about injuries & retirements.

We are not through the second round & there have already been 8 retirements - 7 x men & 1 x women just to add that stat to the mix! Grin

I am having to set an alarm clock every morning to get everything done before play starts. Grin

Am in training for scaling a French Alp with DS when we go out to see them (the day after the SW19 action stops) so am doing a 2 hour walk up & down & round Beachy Head every morning.

My legs ache!

I'm in awe magi - an alp !!

GrouchyKiwi · 04/07/2017 22:19

Shock magi that's hardcore.

I am old enough to be Zverev's mum, but only in a would-be-in-a-trashy-tabloid kind of way.

JaneJeffer · 04/07/2017 22:21

Only the MN rule is half your age plus seven years so Rafa is the youngest I can get away with admiring Grin perfect! Sasha is a good looking lad though!

bookbook · 04/07/2017 22:24

I've no chance then Jane - unless its someone in the seniors/oldies Grin

CremeEggThief · 04/07/2017 22:25

Hi everyone,
I've moved house and I can no longer use my old Sky box to watch the free channels, as there's no dish here. I booked a TV aerial man, who was supposed to come yesterday afternoon, but has cancelled twice and isn't coming 'til tomorrow afternoon now...Hmm So this is the first time in nearly 30 years that I've missed the opening days of Wimbledon.Sad I'm keeping up online and watching "Today at Wimbledon" on iPlayer on my tablet, but I can't bear it much longer. I NEED live tennis!

Picks: Federer and Kvitova or possibly Ostapenko. I think I said on the RG thread she reminds me of a young Monica Seles. I would adore to see Venus win again, but I think that's too much of a fairytale, especially as her emotional state must be fragile.

Absolutely shocking about Kyrgios and Tomic. They should be kicked out of the sport!Angry

Glad to have Boris Becker back on the commentating team. I thought the same as you, Raah, about him needing the money now. I don't think they'll give him any Djokovic matches to commentate though.

Something needs to be done about all these retirements, but I'm not sure what.

Hope to be with you all watching LIVE tennis tomorrow!Smile

BagelGoesWalking · 04/07/2017 22:39

CremeEgg can't you get BBC sport on your iPad during the day when they're playing live (or have I completely misunderstood your post?)

Tomic is shameful (and so was his dad). Don't understand why he continues if he's got plenty of money. I remember hearing that Krygios said he had to choose between tennis and basketball - maybe he should change sports! I was also annoyed by Sue Barker's and Clare Balding's "cheeky chappie" explanations. If it was a young woman player behaving like that, much harsher words would be said. I guarantee it.

JaneJeffer · 04/07/2017 22:43

Aww book we won't tell, what happens on the tennis thread stays on the tennis thread Grin

Hi Creme hope you get your telly sorted.

You're right Bagel none of the women would get away with that carry on on court.

magimedi · 05/07/2017 06:36

It is probably the tiniest Alp you can ever find - no climbing, just a tough walk!

Half my age + 7 - I can only have Tommy Hass Grin - or Bjorg, Edberg......

OP posts:
Raahh · 05/07/2017 07:20

bagel funny you should say that about if it was a woman, they would be treated more harshly- it reminds me of a very young Naomi Broady was. at 17, she posted some pictures on social media out drinking I think, and got in trouble for it being unprofessional behaviour. It was a huge set back for her career at the time, and massively heavy handed for what she did. They didn't excuse her behavior as ' being a kid' even though she was one!

The number of chances the men's team gave Dan Evans , in comparison ....

Fizzywinegum · 05/07/2017 07:26

Can just about get away with Rafa with the MN rule! Got to go to work todaySad - trying to get in early so I can finish a bit early - would quite like to see Murray/brown and should see most of Rafas match.

Agree that Tomic is a disgrace - I couldn't believe his press conference - his attitude is awful and shows such contempt for the paying fans and his fellow players - boo!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 05/07/2017 07:30

Half my age plus seven - Hellooooo, Rafa Grin.

In fact, I can have my pick of the Big Five plus players like Lopez, so I'm happy. The younger ones definitely look a little too much like my sixth formers for comfort.

BagelGoesWalking · 05/07/2017 10:12

Raahh Exactly, Naomi Broady! It just struck me yesterday after the Tomic interview that there were extreme double standards being applied. I might have to tweet the BBC Grin

I have dog walking duties today but will be back to see Murray/Brown.

JaneJeffer · 05/07/2017 11:32

Wow the Beeb playing The Sex Pistols how the times have changed!! Pat Cash now there's a nice Aussie.

JaneJeffer · 05/07/2017 11:35

Sue saying Lendl looks as happy as ever Grin

Raahh · 05/07/2017 12:32

There have been some lovely Aussies. I always had a soft spot for Pat Rafter, and the Woodies. Philippoussis always looked lovely, but could be a stroppy one, at times. I always liked Hewitt too. I know he's given Kyrgios a million chances to prove himself.

And Rod Laver was of course a true gent.

Raahh · 05/07/2017 12:33

match made in heaven, Murray and Lendl, bet the jokes just keep on coming Grin.

Raahh · 05/07/2017 12:45

Heather has just won. Well done to her.

GrouchyKiwi · 05/07/2017 13:06

Yay Heather, great stuff.

Have spent the morning being a domestic goddess - and despite that my house is an absolute tip, so work that out.

Hope to watch Konta and Murray. Will see what the children allow!

Raahh · 05/07/2017 13:32

I find Konta's serving action irritating. The way she move's her wrist, but doesn't seem to let go of the ball, iyswim?

Aww, there's Stan.

Raahh · 05/07/2017 13:35

I have so much to do today. and places to be. And will no doubt miss huge chunks of Rafa's match Sad.

I'm probably the only one hoping Dustin Brown can pull off a surprise upset though Grin.

then Sue can button it about him beating Rafa
