Tennis Tennis Tennis

Am most excited & thought the grass needs a new thread.

I'll stick my neck out & say Fed to win the mens' & Carolina Plisshkova (sp?) for the womens'.

OP posts:
Peregrina · 02/07/2017 23:29

Federer to win the men's definitely. Not sure about womens. Not going to get much done for the next fortnight.

bookbook · 03/07/2017 08:52

I would love Federer to win . :)
Not , in truth, at all sure about the women - haven't watched enough

Raahh · 03/07/2017 09:54

Morning all! Tennis

Obviously, I would love, by some miracle (and bionic knees) for Rafa to really stick it to the nay sayers and win this year. But otherwise, it would be nice for Stan to do well. Roger has to be the favourite at the moment- but 3 sets are different to 5, so we will see. I'd be surprised if this was the year that sprung a big upset, and we got a winner outside the top 5. But I would rather it wasn't Djok or Murray, so that narrows it down Grin.

Roger has been handed a trickier opening round though- Dogs hasn't had a good year, but can pull off surprises. Might be an interesting match. Or Dogs might just crumble. I've always liked him, though. He has never quite made it, got up in the top 20, then lost it again.

The women's draw is wide open. After her awful start to the year, and because I like her, it would be nice for Kvitova to win again. But really, it could be anyone's . Would love to Halep to win, but she just seems to lack confidence in the big events.

magimedi · 03/07/2017 10:03

Tennis One of the best days of the year!

I am only going for Pliskova as I watched her for a few cames @ Devonshire Park. She is very powerful & very laid back so I don't think nerves would be an issue for her.

I want Andy to win - but I don't think he will.

Hello all Smile and thanks for starting a new thread magi.

Well, I want Andy to win, or Rafa, but I think Fed might do it.

I'd like to see Kvitova win again, or Halep. It'd be great to see Jo Konta do well, but a lot will depend on the injury she sustained at Eastbourne. I also think Pliskova could do very well, grass suits her game.

Ooh, I can't wait!!!

bookbook · 03/07/2017 10:39

I forgot to say thanks to magi for the thread !
What do you think of this hip injury of Andy's though - won't it impinge on his free movement, which is always a crucial part of his game?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/07/2017 10:59

Who I want to win: Rafa
Who I think will win: Federer
Who I wouldn't mind causing an upset and winning: Wawrinka
Who I really don't want to win: Djokovic
Who I wouldn't mind winning but think it's more likely to all go to hell in a handcart for: Murray
Who could surprise us all: Cilic

Zero interest in the women's game, I'm afraid...

SapphireStrange · 03/07/2017 11:06

Just checking in. Probably won't have time to watch much, so I'll be relying on MN for news!

Why are you all picking Roger Federer to win? I'm very out of the loop with everyone's season so far/form etc; I've got no idea how he's been playing.

I wonder if Nadal might win it. He was in awesome form at the French and I think he's been out/off the boil for so long, he is now HUNGRY.

Or Stan W, although that would be more of a surprise.

Haven't a clue about the women's (even more out of the loop there), but it must be very open with no Serena W or Maria S. Maybe Petra Kvitova? Would love to see her win.

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2017 11:23

Can't wait!

I'm expecting Sasha Zverev to do well.

I'd love Aga Radwanska to win this year.

Raahh · 03/07/2017 11:50

Magi forgot to mention the lovely Del Potro. A fairy tale Wimbledon win would be for him to do well. But it's a shame injuries have got in the way again.

But he is drawn against Kokkinakis, which might be tough.

Sapphire everyone is picking Roger because he has just won his 9th Halle title (so is the only player with any real form on grass), he came from months off, to play brilliantly in Australia, and then backed it up with wins in Indian wells and Miami. He is second in the ATP race, despite having ditched the whole clay season.

I'm not a Roger fan, but what he's achieved this year, (when he started it ranked in the low teens, after months out) is pretty impressive.

But my heart says Rafa. Though my head is saying- just get past the first roundGrin

Raahh · 03/07/2017 11:55

and he could, could retain the number one .

He's 105 points behind Murray as of today.

Raahh · 03/07/2017 12:01

ooh, its looking sunny at SW19.

SapphireStrange · 03/07/2017 12:15

Thanks, Raahh. It does sound like things are going well for Federer.

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2017 12:19

Feck it I want my red button back Angry

Raahh · 03/07/2017 12:21

Just watching Laura Robson- I do feel sorry for her . must be hard, having previously been built up as the next big thing, to not really quite get there, and end up thwarted by injury.

I see Sue is yammering on about Kyrgios, who is in danger of going out. He is 'injured' still. There are so many other players coming up through the ranks, you'd think they would just give up on bad tempered Nick now, wouldn't you? he's not entertaining, he's a bad loser, and a brat. IMO Grin.

Raahh · 03/07/2017 12:23

I'm making the most of the fact I will be out an about with school runs/football etc later. Which is rubbish.

I'll stop waffling in a bit. Not looking good for Laura. Sad

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2017 12:27

I know Raahh, why can't they champion one of the other young, well mannered lads instead? Kyrgios isn't living up to all the hype they give him. I expect his injuries to flare up again if things don't go his way.

Peregrina · 03/07/2017 12:50

The end of Singles for Laura for this Wimbledon.

Raahh · 03/07/2017 12:50

Oh dear- he's retired. I am gutted. I'm not gutted

Sue has described him as 'charismatic'. I'm not sure she knows what that means Grin.

Raahh · 03/07/2017 12:55

Poor Laura. Must be hard for her, seeing how well Jo Konta is doing, knowing that really, she could have been up there with the best.

This Cameron Norrie chap is a melting pot- Scottish dad, Welsh mum, spent his early life in South Africa, moved to New Zealand, and has been training on the US college circuit.

plays for GBGrin

saw him interviewed last week in Eastbourne, he seems like a nice bloke, and not at all confused by all that!

Fizzywinegum · 03/07/2017 13:06

Hello is it ok if I join you all? Big tennis (Rafa) fan. Would love to see Rafa win, but my second favourite would be Federer. Wouldn't mind Murray winning but definitely not Djokovic!
I also get annoyed by the kyrgios hype - I don't think I've ever seen him win a match.
Just settling down to watch Murray and then Rafa match - the house needs cleaning but everything usually goes to pot for Wimbledon fortnight.

Raahh · 03/07/2017 13:10

I love Boris . Talking about Murray 'He likes to complain anywayGrin

Raahh · 03/07/2017 13:12

Afternoon Fizzy.

Yy, my house (which is not show home at the best of times, and has barely recovered from 2 weeks of me watching RG, and then Queen's), will just have to clean itself.

i throw food at the children occasionally. Grin

Fizzywinegum · 03/07/2017 13:18

Like the sound of a self cleaning house! Didn't get to see much of RG apart from the final but will be glued to the settee for Wimbledon apart from when work and people needing to be fed intervene.

MrsPear · 03/07/2017 13:22

Can I join?

At least I'm not the only one whose house goes to pot!

Out of the loop with women's game.

I would love Murray to get his 3rd but I think it will be Fed - going by their recent form
