Anyone else watching tonight?

(Ireland apparently gets Wednesday episodes instead.
No spoilers, please!).

Because she couldn't bear him suffering

crookedhooker · 08/06/2017 22:22

Haven't watched it. Part of it was filmed very close to my home. Would give me nightmares.

SamoanSamosa · 08/06/2017 22:23

But why would Mary (now Paula) be angry with James?

He was with her when she died and tried to save her!

Mary cuddling up to James shows that she wasn't angry and that she forgave him for not being able to save her.

So if Mary is paula there's a confusion over how Mary feels about James. Also the snogging if Paula is mary - just weird!!

SamoanSamosa · 08/06/2017 22:24

But she said she didn't 'feel' anything! Clearly she does! Bullied hot, Callum suffering, the dog etc!!!

CeeBeeBee · 08/06/2017 22:24

I think Mary is definitely dead and Paula can therefore not be the grown up Mary. The only explanation I can think of is that Paula "becomes" Mary when she's slept with someone. James saw Mary after he met Paula because Mary was taking him "home".

So many unanswered questions still.

SamoanSamosa · 08/06/2017 22:25

Also neither Mary or Paula had a happy childhood. But Paula said she blacked out and went to a happier place so can't have relived Mary's life.

Livedandlearned · 08/06/2017 22:31

I really feel disappointed, I watched the whole episode waiting for things to make sense and they didn't. They bloody didn't.

WellErrr · 08/06/2017 22:31

Absolutely NOTHING made sense in that.

It wasn't clever at all.

Imstickingwiththisone · 08/06/2017 22:31

Morgan said that James didn't mean to do it when talking about Mary. So the implication is that he was the cause of death, which doesn't tie in with what he told Mac so could've been bullshit?

itypefast · 08/06/2017 22:34

Who's the dad of Paula's baby?

Livedandlearned · 08/06/2017 22:34

www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/paula-review-real-star-turn-satisfyingly-dark-finale/

This is the synopsis which makes more sense ( of some unanswered questions )

Livedandlearned · 08/06/2017 22:36

And did you notice that after she buried James, the next day she put on her lamp, her lights, there was even sunshine. As though she felt better.

Christmastree43 · 08/06/2017 22:39

Omg that was so soo chilling 😐 Absolutely horrifying and so clever I thought!

I think people are wanting it to be too literal. I don't think their two stories are literally linked as in she is Mary or she becomes Mary. I think they are two twisted people whose lives come together in some horrific cosmic poetic justice way - I don't think she knew his worst nightmare would be a confined space for example think it was just a convergence of her horrendousness with his - kind of a karma for him.

I absolutely loved how evil Paula was what an amazing twist - and what was clever was that she wasn't some angelic nice woman before the twist - she has been very complex throughout.

Good pick up of the psycho comment PP!

It was so so frightening and chilling when Mary came up to him at the end - think a PP may have it with the reference to seeing the dead when death is close.

I thought the whole series was a masterpiece in horror and psycho sexual/ psycho drama - I personally love the effect of all the loose ends but obviously that's not for some people.

I'm frightened to go to sleep now especially as I have a cellar 🙈 Definitely going to have to put love island on for half an hour 🙈😂

DereksGotATail · 08/06/2017 22:39

I've got no idea what I've just watched Confused maybe I should watch more straightforward dramas.

barrygetamoveonplease · 08/06/2017 22:40

Paula's 'prisoner' fantasies were carried out when she had James in the box. He'd killed her former lover and her brother - she'd expressed to Mac that she wanted to kill James and he'd said that was 'normal'.

Mary was in James's imagination - meeting Paula had reminded him of her.

Mary said her leg was bent right back, her mouth was sewn, maybe there was more to her death than simply being left in a cupboard for a week. James had told Morgan he hadn't meant to do it.

Paula described her alternate-life family as loving - that couldn't have been the experience of Mary, in a family with a drunken father who worked away, and a mother who was seriously mentally ill, and only her brother to look after her.

CeeBeeBee · 08/06/2017 22:41

Do you think that by killing her brother, she was testing herself to see whether she'd be able to kill someone she definitely wanted to get rid of? The burial was very well organised to have been a quick "hide the body" plan.

Clawdy · 08/06/2017 23:07

Thete is no way Paula is Mary. Mary was younger than James, and Paula is definitely some years older than him.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 08/06/2017 23:08

So, so many questions remaining.

Mind too perplexed for any theorising tonight; will attempt such in the morning.

Was it wrong that I worried far more for the Spaniel's welfare (with good reason, as it turns out), than anyone else's?

He didn't want anyone to have Paula.

Christmastree43 · 08/06/2017 23:22

I think he sees himself as her defender in some crazy way

Christmastree43 · 08/06/2017 23:23

Actually you've put it best CeeBeeBee

Deux · 08/06/2017 23:23

That was horribly disappointing. Too many unanswered questions.

I was thinking that the workmen were going to come across the skeleton of Mary.

Maybe the dog ate rat poison?

Christmastree43 · 08/06/2017 23:27

He doesn't want anyone else to have Paula or Paula to have anyone else... he wants it just to be the two of them and that's why he is strangley and horribly comforted by Mary when it's just those two in the box... some kind of toxic dependency or something he can never escape

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 08/06/2017 23:31

What. The. Fuck.

It was like The Replacement all over again. They manage two episodes then screw up the ending!

That's three hours of my life I'll never see again Hmm
