Will anyone here be watching?!

OP posts:
LIZS · 28/03/2017 10:22

He's none too bright!

IreneWinters · 28/03/2017 10:23

I think the personal grudge against Rapey McRapist was just because he got into the car with her and intimidated her. She wanted to show him she wasn't scared of him.

NotJanine · 28/03/2017 10:25

I wasn't sure if Lenny was angry with Jim on Trish's behalf or Cath's?

yoyoyoy · 28/03/2017 10:42

Shoals of red herrings so far , hope we see a bit more progress next week . Why are all the men in BC so creepy ? Went to West Bay on Friday en route to Devon so spent this episode spotting places that we recognized - lovely little place ,well worth a visit

NotJanine · 28/03/2017 10:45

yoyoyoy - I thought you were going to say you went there and the men really were creepy

LIZS · 28/03/2017 10:48

Men do seem to significantly outnumber women there!

The80sweregreat · 28/03/2017 11:03

I've been to west bay and that area, people were really friendly and its a lovely place too.
I am watching but getting more confused about who is doing what to whom. ( losing the will to live a bit with this one, series one was fabulous)

ElspethFlashman · 28/03/2017 13:23

God, is there any likeable male character on this thing? Even the vicar is a pissy little baby.

I hate Kath. Absolutely can't stand her. But fair play to the actress (who I never liked before cos of her tight mouthed delivery) for going all in with an unsympathetic character.

My DH has already given up on this series so I'm watching it alone. Sad It's too slow for him and he dislikes rape plots so it would have to be very exciting to keep him watching. And sadly, exciting it is not.

I know Broadchurch is intentionally more of a slow burner, but it really is a bit dull at present, isn't it?

DubiousCredentials · 28/03/2017 13:36

Well David Tenant is very likeable IMO.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/03/2017 13:38

Apparently the vicar role was written specifically for that actor. I do wonder why..... Unless perhaps it was him all along? Danny Latimer and rapist??
(Clutching at straws!!)

Alfieisnoisy · 28/03/2017 13:43

I adore West Bay, had many a happy time there with DS crab fishing off the harbour.

And yes....I agree with whoever said Jim Howick is indeed lush....and I can't cope with him being creepy racist bloke at all. Grin Such is the life of an actor though and I guess he was glad to have the work.

FawnDrench · 28/03/2017 14:02

Well apart from everyone being a suspect, I remain clueless, but am really enjoying all the theories on here.

I thought they made a bit of a thing of taxi driver creep taking several photos of Jim when his van broke down, putting them both at the same place at a certain time.

Didn't understand what the letters were that Mark got given or who they were from. Can anyone tell me please?

eddiemairswife · 28/03/2017 14:12

I'm still finding it difficult to remember who each of the suspects is re names and jobs. The girl at the ice-cream stall, who was she alibiing?

LIZS · 28/03/2017 14:18

Was she gf of fishing tackle shop man , who also plays football.

hackmum · 28/03/2017 14:28

I am really enjoying it. Loving the shots of West Bay - like others, have had happy holidays there.

Some good theories here. I don't think it's the vicar (much too nice, and would throw the previous series into question) or Mark Latimer (also too nice). It won't be Lenny Henry as it would just be too awful to make the black character the rapist.

I no longer think it can be Tom Miller or the taxi driver's stepson, as they're too young, given that the rapes now go back two years.

Rapey McRapist is too obvious. It's not him, though he is up to no good in some way and yes, the policewoman who is Lenny Henry's daughter seems very keen to pin it on him. What's her motivation?

The string shop guy whose girlfriend lied for him is also a bit too obvious, though like Rapey he is clearly up to no good in some other way.

I think the Nigel theory is an interesting one. Otherwise, why is he back there? The thing about these series is it's always someone who isn't under suspicion. So it has to be a male character we've seen but no-one suspects. I thought it might be the owner of the country hotel, but then he produced the sock evidence. He could be fitting someone up, I suppose.

NotJanine · 28/03/2017 14:31

yes, ice cream girl is rope boy's girlfriend. She's covered up for him twice before and he wears the football socks that match the one found in the grounds of the house. Waaay too obvious that he's rapist.

Interesting idea about the photo fawndrench. Or maybe it could lead to discovery of other pictures that he has on his phone?

Elendon · 28/03/2017 14:57

I don't think the young detective has any motivation. She was previously all into rape myths and when he got into the car, realised that her beliefs were rubbish. She understood the threat.

The photos I think were a statement on social media, everything goes onto it in the hope it gets hits.

As for the letters? Well, they could be from Miller.

Elendon · 28/03/2017 14:58

And I won't be able to watch it next week. So frustrating. I won't have internet until Wednesday.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/03/2017 15:01

The letters were addressed to Danny. Mark wrote them to him after he died and gave them to the editor lady who wrote a book about Danny's death- 1st episode she was signing books remember? She obviously hadn't used them

Nigel will provide mark's alibi for where he was when he was actually beating up or killing Joe Miller?

MattBerrysHair · 28/03/2017 15:09

What was that cheeky wink that rope boy gave taxi man all about? When he told him to take him home while he was on the phone?

APlaceOnTheCouch · 28/03/2017 16:40

I wonder if rope boy is renting the cottage beside the party house? That could explain the wink to the taxi driver maybe he knows he was in the vicinity on the night of the rape.
PreEmptive I completely agree with you about DT in Jessica Jones. I thought I'd never like him again. Moral, upright, principled Hardy is helping to dispel those memories.
I thought Mark had tracked Joe down so he could serve him with papers for a civil case? The lawyer said he needed an address for Joe to be able to proceed. Joe and Mark are supposed to be in Scotland unless Mark lied to the editor

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/03/2017 16:55

Hi place

I think they are in Liverpool, the road signs on the way as mark was going to find him were all Liverpool. I think the Scotland story is a lie. Cunning alibi?!
Someone up thread said mark is too nice, but I really don't like him. I find him the creepiest of all the creepies in Broadchurch.

Graphista · 28/03/2017 17:03

It looked to me like joe is in Scotland (looked local to me actually!) working security (how the hell'd he get a job in security? Confused) working ferries/docks. If mark lumps him into the sea with no witnesses & an alibi from Nige joe will be dead & mark will get away with murder.

Yes now thinking not Tom, Michael (taxi drivers stepson) and Leo (cocky rope boy) seems too obvious, he'll have been up to no good (related to computer stuff?) but not the rapes.

Could STILL be:

Jim - shit attitude to women inc wife, 'I can have sex with whoever I want' often cited as an excuse by rapists? When of course it's not about sex.

Ed - I really hope not because racist idiots would love that, I think at heart he's a good man though shouldn't have belted Jim (he could have had a 'strong word')

Ian - fits in with the seasonal aspect, if he's been spying on Trish raping her could be revenge for her not staying celibate after booting him out. We don't know he's NOT connected to the other 2 victims, it being a small town likely they knew him, they could've spurned his advances?

Arthur (country house owner) - we know VERY little about him, plus good actor be a waste not to use him, remember throughout the 1st series Joe was a 'minor character' seemingly only in it as millers husband till quite near the end we knew little about him.

Clive - unlikely I know as lack of dna evidence ruled him out. But still a misogynistic twat. Though I don't see his wife as a victim, more a case of they deserve each other, he cheats she's controlling (and lied that Michael was his?)

Caterer - as for Arthur very minor character becoming central would fit with broadchurch's style. Also fits with seasonal aspect

Band members - who are they? Could they be characters we've already met? Eg Leo?

Yea never liked Kath (though I like the actress) her 'I'm her best friend' Schtick seemed more about involving herself in the drama and getting some attention for herself than actually supporting Trish. As for 'why would he rape you' was a vile thing to say regardless of what she'd just been told.

I agree Chloe's situation will be why hardy leaves Broadchurch and the series ends. Tom & Michael likely to be involved in this storyline and while Miller would not condone Tom's actions I can see her still supporting him as he's her son and hardy and Miller falling out as a result. Sad

Eds daughter - can see her ending up under threat from rapist, having all her prejudices unravel (not drunk, not 'weak', not somewhere risky, wearing demure clothes & no make up etc)

At first I thought how the hell is eds daughter still on the case but then given its such a small town maybe that's not practical, maybe a lot of the officers on the case have connections to various people of interest in the case.

LIZS · 28/03/2017 17:10

I thought Mark said Joe was in Scotland to vicar, or was it when he said he was off on holiday, and did I imagine I saw a Glasgow signpost? Surprised the van could make it that far !

hollyisalovelyname · 28/03/2017 17:30

Some people are saying 'it may be so and so but that is too obvious'

Oh you of short memories !!!
Remember the Broadchurch thread re Series 2 on Mumsnet ?
How we raged about the awfulness after Series 1 being so good!!!
