Will anyone here be watching?!

OP posts:
TizzyDongue · 28/03/2017 06:49

Well I'm still no clearer. Feel like I should take notes whilst watching. Now we know there have been three rapes in the area that are extremely similar in how they were carried out - hit from behind, tied up and gagged with something (two times a sock) into the victim's mouth. We also know that two followed drunken parties, making the rapes more similar.

Dodgy string shop boy (how old is he btw?) is looking possible with the Sock Shot, general dodginess and the hint towards his attitude to women - the comment about finding a woman to do the washing and getting his girlfriend to lie. Girlfriend said something about it being the third favour he owes her - so what other two things did she do for him? (also what was the 'but are you lying?' Or whatever the exact words were).

Trish confessed to Cath, cath seemed shocked enough I think to debunk the theory about her being behind it. Enough nasty comments from her re standards slipping and the terrible why would it be you someone chose to rape. He (like Horrible Taxi Man) has evidently had many past affairs. But what is she holding over him with the 'I could set fire to your life' comment mean? What's he done only she knows about?

Horrible Taxi Man is certainly getting more horrible, along with his creepy key collection. What was Jim suggesting in the taxi? Other than his horrible creepiness makes him dodgy.

Trish's ceepy ex husband breaking into the house is to do with the laptop no doubt, I'd say he's is a saddo porn watcher but why he has something Dodgy String Boy put on Trish's computer I don't know. I was thinking a spy camera but not sure how it'd work if the computer was off. It'd be ineffective for general spying.

What is the story with young police detective? She's not telling anyone Lenny Henry is her dad (why don't they know already in a small place? Small enough for everyone to know it was Trish that was raped) we still don't know why she went visit him. Lenny himself isn't helping his dodgy look by coming across overtly found of Trish, enough to give Jim a right beating for having slept with her.

Vicar is more annoying than dodgy, so agree its not clear what his role is. Maybe he'll be involved in calming Mad Mark down. Personally I don't think he's involved (mark that is) its just a separate plot, he's unraveling because he feels everyone else has moved on after his son's murder.

Unsure about the teen boys - torn between thinking they are just being nasty sods sharing pictures and videos of girls in school or if they are watching videos of older people in village or more deeply involved.

Not sure if I've left anyone out!!

VanillaSugar · 28/03/2017 07:05

I think the football socks are too obvious - I think someone will say they lost one or something.

Riversleep · 28/03/2017 07:13

Didn't the early morning shag have something to do with fixing the boiler? So basically they were making a crap porn, or it was a longer term affair than they made out.

fairycakecentral · 28/03/2017 07:15

If Lenny henrys police officer daughter fails to tell Miller and hardy that Lenny is her dad, won't that compromise all the evidence? So even if they work out who it is, it could be thrown out as everything else she does could be seen as compromised?

I do feel it is a little heavy handed on trying to dispel rape myths and police involvement- the 2nd victim explaining why she didn't come forward, miller and a Hardy in the car explaining to each other that they weren't like that ... it's a bit too much. Otherwise, I'm really enjoying it.

CoolCarrie · 28/03/2017 07:55

The actor who plays Jim was the horrible control freak husband in the brilliant Home Fires and he played Alistair Campbell twice, so is bound to be playing a bastard in this.

IAmNotAUserNumber · 28/03/2017 07:57

theliverpoolone Miller persuaded him to have surgery which he'd been putting off, I think

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 28/03/2017 08:00

So even if they work out who it is, it could be thrown out as everything else she does could be seen as compromised?

Oh gods >boak< You may well have a point there. That'd just be the icing on the came wouldn't it. Sad

DP wants to know why I like this show and The Fall (only just discovered it!). Thinks my tastes are getting grim. I pointed out that, on the contrary, just as he refers to West Wing as Fantasy White House, this is Fantasy Cop Show for me: the police believe mere women and work hard on solving crimes that happen to them! Shock And anyway he watches Braquo and that really grim one with Billy Bob Thornton, so he doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Alfieisnoisy · 28/03/2017 08:24

My money's on this guy Grin

Can never watch Horrible Histories again....Jim Howick has destroyed it by becoming creepy possible rapist bloke in Broadchurch.

Broadchurch series 3
cherrytree63 · 28/03/2017 09:07

Not at all relevant to plot, but I think LH's daughter is the same actress in "Murdered by my Boyfriend ".
Even more irrelevant, I was MNing last night with the TV on in the background and I heard a familer voice, looked up expecting to see Olivia C, but it was Emma Thompson Blush
As you were...

cherrytree63 · 28/03/2017 09:10

Alfie is that the country house owner? I remember him from an episode of Cracker, and also a series where Trevor Eve was having an affair with his daughter.
Totally showing my age here....

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/03/2017 09:27

I think Katie (LH's daughter) knows the released rapist somehow. When he got in the car next to her I felt a flicker of acknowledgement and also when she went to his door in ep 5 last night. It's as if she has a personal knowledge of him. She has a personal vendetta against him.

It is also odd that she has deliberately not mentioned her link to Ed Burnett- but also that no one else has either. Eg cath/trish haven't mentioned that his daughter is on the same police force as Miller and hardy. Perhaps no one knows.

I think Jim has had affairs with lots of local women which is why so few women were at cath's party. As he said to taxi man- he knows all his clients, his boss, his colleagues, he's very well known in BC so if cath was to reveal to all the husbands that he's slept with their wives he would be in a whole lotta trouble.

I think ed (LH) holds the key to the missing piece of evidence with the caravans. Someone who stays in one of those vans raped trish. Currently hardy/Miller don't know about those vans do they? Only mentioned for the first time last night by Ian. But when they do it will link the seasonal worker/ fruit farm theory.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 28/03/2017 09:31

A few thoughts:

Creepy Convicted Aaron, though he makes my skin crawl, is not Trish's rapist, but connected to the wider story in some relevant way.
Am still convinced DC Katie has had previous run-in with him, pre-dating last week's car incident. Or even that he has some hold over her (maybe somehow relating to Ed? Her late mother?).

Hardy's daughter specifically said photo(s), not video clip, taken from her phone.
Doctored by someone/ her face superimposed over another female's body, before being shared round school, perhaps?
Or did she have pre-existing, compromising pics on there? Hardy previously alluded to her going off the rails, hence their "fresh start" move back to Broadchurch.

(Another plot strand serving to make audience ask themselves uncomfortable questions about victim-blaming/ revenge sexting etc.)

Miller's son was definitely watching moving footage of some sort (we audience didn't see screen, but heard audio), so unrelated or not?

Perhaps standard blackmail material, to silence youngsters groomed by people already involved with darkweb/ Broadchurch porn-sharing ring, like Arrogant Rope Boy (young, good looking, family business etc; probably seen as attractive by local teen girls? How old did Fish and Chips Girlfriend seem? And he apparently owes her for helping him out 3 times now; doing what?).

Am intrigued by who 3rd woman raped, mentioned by Beth's supervisor, could be?

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 28/03/2017 09:32

bear,

Great minds...!

Elendon · 28/03/2017 09:35

I came on to say exactly what River said

Didn't the early morning shag have something to do with fixing the boiler? So basically they were making a crap porn

I also think that the vicar has had sex with Trish.

I thought the scene with Cath and Trish was brilliantly acted. Two much under rated actors.

Also I would want to know a bit more about the woman who came forward about her rape. I would want to know about her husband of six weeks.

Also think that the seasonal thing about the rapes is significant. Points to the musicians or the caterer (who might well be the father of the Taxi driver's wife's son).

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/03/2017 09:37

Thalia indeed! I think Katie dated rapist guy previously and had consensual sex but with the whole hands tied/gagged thing. Or was put off when he suggested it? Or perhaps she was the woman from the budget hotel and has changed her name- which is why no one knows that, and also why no one has linked her to Ed Burnett (as she has different surname?)

Released rapist also said he didn't know a Laura Benson at the IT firm- but she said she's just got married so benson may be her married name. What was her name then? He said benson as in 'I didn't know a Laura benson but I did know a Laura smith'

Elendon · 28/03/2017 09:39

Wouldn't be surprised if 2nd victim was married to musician or caterer.

Also Ed (Henry) has a very nasty streak (though this could well be a red herring mackerel)

Elendon · 28/03/2017 09:48

Creepy Arron might well have known a Benson at the pub that he and Laura went to and was shocked to know she had married a rapist. He might well be creepy but he is intelligent shudders

NotJanine · 28/03/2017 10:08

I think I must have missed the caterer. When were they featured, who is playing the part?

It seemed the DT had told OC about the photo of his daughter doing the rounds. She asked if he wanted her to talk to her about it. Have I got this mixed up, but wasn't her son one of the ones who got in trouble at school for sharing porn? If so, wouldn't she think there could be a link?

I think all of the suspected men are guilty of something but probably not the rapes.

Having sex when you just pop round to fix a boiler sounds very unlikely!

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 28/03/2017 10:10

Thought it considerate of Mark to flag up to Joe Miller of his imminent demise, by arriving in a work van helpfully marked MARK LATIMER PLUMBING and contact details... Hmm

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 28/03/2017 10:18

Can never watch Horrible Histories again....Jim Howick has destroyed it by becoming creepy possible rapist bloke in Broadchurch.

I feel like that too, but I expect/hope I'll get over it with time and therapy, because Jim Howick is Lush, he is.

Also fancied the bits off of David Tennant until his character in Jessica Jones cured me of that for a while,. But I'm recovering now. Blush

Elendon · 28/03/2017 10:18

But the van was parked around the corner, so Miller wouldn't have seen it. However, I'm sure you just can't park in Liverpool docks without a permit. (assuming it's Liverpool).

IreneWinters · 28/03/2017 10:18

I don't think Rapey McRapist is involved. I think he's deliberately wasting police time, making them investigate him, knowing that he actually has a cast iron alibi for the 2 rapes (not fishing like he said, but somewhere else). He wants to get revenge on the police since, in his mind, he was innocent of the rape he went to prison for and has been "harassed" about since (maybe the writers want to point out a bit of rape culture "rapists don't believe they're bad people" etc). I wonder if the time they are spending investigating him will lead to the real rapist being able to attack someone else.

LIZS · 28/03/2017 10:19

Was the landowner the same guy who lived in the cottage and appeared last week. Could he have planted the sock? Ed has anger issues, was he jealous over Trish and car bloke? He could physically overpower him yet taxi driver mate was easily intimidated. Confused

Yes thought same about the van , rather traceable if anything suspicious happens to Joe too.

I'm confused about the timeline, we seem to only be a few days after the rape yet DTs daughter mentioned her phone was hacked weeks ago, so had they been back a while?

rollonthesummer · 28/03/2017 10:19

I agree that Lenny Henry's daughter seemed to have a personal grudge against HH man.

Odd that ice cream girl would lie to the police to protect a man she's only been seeing a couple of months.

And getting his mobile phone out to delete an answer phone message just to mark him exactly at the scene as well!!
