Thread one here

So, Sophie Giroux returned pretending to be Alice Webster. DNA results on the body in the shed confirm she is related to Sam.

Baptiste has found out about Henry Reed and the Brigadier being involved with a 9 year old girl in Iraq in 1991. Henry Reed was paying this girls brother.

There are 3 girls in the rollercoaster photo, Sophie, Alice and possibly the girl from Iraq? She has that colouring.

Henry Reed apparently committed suicide although Julien told Daniel he didn't. Whatever Daniel found out about him made him sick.

Nadia has been badly beaten and her husband is still in prison after being identified by Sophie/Alice. Matthew was made to promise to say sorry to the butcher.

Sophie is now in Switzerland. As is the newly spray painted yellow campervan that abducted Alice. Gemma and Baptiste doubt the DNA results as they are still looking for answers 2 years after she returned.

Birds keep being mentioned. Sophie and Alice both had the Web tattoo on their wrists.

Although I didn't think there was any indication they were having an affair around the time Alice came back.

There were loads of forensics people in white suits there on the night of the fire.

Van Man is Derek Riddell Wink.

FoxesOnSocks · 03/11/2016 22:56

Someone put a picture on Twitter- the CCTV of the florist - declaring that the van was the kidnapped van. I wasn't convinced though. I'll look for it again though.

Hesterton I had the same thought about Sophie's dad (mainly because I was trying to think of a likely candidate among the characters). But then I remembered we'd seen him working in a DIY store in France where Julian went to see him.
I think the shed body swap worked because everyone saw what they expected to see - girl with tattoo locked in shed, caught on CCTV buying petrol, had a huge row and stormed off shortly before, body burned beyond all recognition. I think what is slightly unbelievable is that a DNA test wasn't carried out before that point - especially since Alice/Sophie had had surgery.

Here you are twitter.com/tips2605/status/793954519369584640

It's not the same van at ALL is it? I feel confused as people were agreeing with the original tweeter

She was being kept in Germany and her dad lived in France so easier to go to Alice's house. It was my suggestion that she wanted to take Alice home (she seemed to want to do the right thing - hence her apology to the butcher).
I like Margot's explanation for the dog barking at the camper van. Maybe Sophie and the third girl are together on their own now - a happy ending of sorts for them (it would also explain the fact that I can't think of a single candidate that we know of to be the camper van driver).

The feller on the left Lillian?

I'm confused.

Why do we think Sam is the brig's son?

And why do we think eve has a twin?

MargotLovedTom · 03/11/2016 23:36

I'm not convinced at all about either of those theories, tbh. I will hold my hands up if I'm wrong though Wink.

MiddleClassProblem · 03/11/2016 23:39

Maybe it's just 3 girls who really like surfing but weren't allowed to surf and they met on a surfing forum and the French one learnt to drive in a field and knew of an abandoned camper an. They all ran away together and when surfing in the south of France and met brig who was a gnarly King of the waves on army rec time but one day he and his best mates Dave and Henry got caught in a crazy rip tide and Dave got pulled under, they couldn't save him. The girls saw it all and did know how brig and Henry could live with themselves.

The girls decided to put surfing on the back burner after witnessing such events so they toured Europe, picked up a puppy and hit the amusement parks.

In 91 brig, Henry and Dave were in Iraq and Henry accidentally killed a 9 yr old girl so he felt in debt to their family, torn with guilt. The only thing that could give him peace was being at one with the sea. Just him an his buddies with not a gun sight. Since Dave, that also became a harrowing place and for years he lived without a release which resulted in his suicude.

Brig still dreams of the ebb and flow of the Mediterranean. His distant memory of riding a 60 footer in Nazare with the Portuguese sun beating down on his face. Those girls with alabaster skin that he warned daily about wearing sun screen in the summer of 06.

Maybe it's something to do with closure - ie FakeAlice got to bury her child (or didn't?), so she ensures that the Webster (eventually ?) were able to lay to rest RealAlice ? I have no idea. I literally get a new theory every half an hour.

I still reckon the M. Giroux is a wrong'un. Why would his wife kill herself, if she thought that her daughter was out there somewhere? I think she had reason to believe that M Giroux had done something bad. And he still has FakeAlice now, hence the I'm taken -not I have boyfriend, I'm not interested, etc etc. So I vote for - he had got his own daughter pregnant, then he hid her. RealAlice was later taken by him (with that'd of Brig, who was in cahoots), then she died, and FakeAlice 'returned' her to her family. And the 3rd girl was... just a coincidence. But she got chatting with them at the theme park and she gave he the necklace. Or they each bought it there.

TheSpottedZebra · 03/11/2016 23:41

OR -3rd girl 'rescued' them both? AND they were runaways, not captives?

I have no idea. and it is late.

TheSpottedZebra · 03/11/2016 23:42

I love your theory, Middle. Did we see any sand or salt stains on the campervan? Let's look at the pictures again...

MiddleClassProblem · 03/11/2016 23:45

The twist is that everyone is nice really Grin

youarenotkiddingme · 04/11/2016 07:03

I wonder if we'll hear Baotistes theory on his death bed and never know the truth?

AnyFucker · 04/11/2016 07:22

No ! Baptist cannot die !

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/11/2016 07:24

Ah, I see you caught up with the episode, AF.

Sad, but better to go out on a high.

Broadchurch and the fall, anyone?

AnyFucker · 04/11/2016 07:26

Yes, Chard, and I am as confused as everyone else

LillianGish · 04/11/2016 07:28

Baptiste is French - that must give him an increased chance of being cured (in time for a third series).

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 04/11/2016 07:31

I enjoy the confusion, I must say.
So much better then us coming up with whodunnit on at the end Thread 1.

Shame about Baptiste, maybe they will have the German Policeman take over next season?
talent spotting

MiddleClassProblem · 04/11/2016 07:55

Or maybe they will just do a story from the years in between? Or he will get the op and be fine?

Fiderer · 04/11/2016 08:05

Still want Baptiste (with hair and philosophic musings) and German policeman to get their own series.

Still mulling over NotAlice's motives for returning as Alice and not as Sophie. The sleeping in the shed thing must have been planned for the fire. A very calculated deception. Midget, the toy, the narration of the first rape.

If Alice were already dead then her body could have been left anywhere to be discovered. "Alice" coming home to then die was not only calculated but exceptionally cruel. Though obviously Sophie/Alice's thinking is likely skewed.
