For those who loved it last time, will you watch after the let down of the ending? (Well I felt it was a let down, don't think there was a proper conclusion at all and still room for doubts as to whether he was still alive or not).

I loved it though and will definitely be watching the next series. I've seen the trailer and it looks very very good. Julian (think that was his name) is still in it. Looks like it is based on JayCee Dugard/Elizabeth Fritz type cases where they have gone missing as children and reappeared years later.

Cannot wait!

Missed loads last night as DH was wittering on. Need to watch on catch up.

FemaleDilbert · 27/10/2016 21:13

The lock on the shed would have been burning hot, even if the key was in I don't think he could have touched it

MargotLovedTom · 27/10/2016 22:01

He definitely grabbed the lock then dropped it quickly. We don't know if the key was in or if it had been taken though. As pp said - how could she have got out of that window?!

Re David Morrissey being 52 - he doesn't look it. I think he and Keeley Hawes make a very plausible couple.

Stillnoidea · 27/10/2016 22:06

I'm with Moving (back on pg 24!) - I think there's some connection with the family in the car, especially given it was not long after (I think) Alice/Sophie's speech about how she had had happy times. AND I've just remembered the psychiatrist was also talking about loving your abductor.

Probably totally wrong......

Only just got to watch it. Pretty grim episode hated the butcher scene reminded me of the series fargo! Really not sure what's going on yet but liking that some lose ends have been tied up - promise brother made and reason for rollercoaster pics. Don't trust Brigs daughter at all so was disappointed to see Gemma brought the pics to her, I'm worried shwhen will give her bad advice on what to do about it.

Loving the theory about brigadiers daughters being identical twins, also liking the theory about the family playing eye spy being Alice. With regards the dog barking was there a dog at the school when Alice bunker off or maybe I'm imagining things...

Elendon · 27/10/2016 22:25

Loving and sympathising with your captor is called Stockholm syndrome

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome

I'm wondering how the dad and brig's daughter started their liaison. I think that might be significant, and why would Gemma have gone to her? All very bizarre.

LarkDescending · 27/10/2016 22:44

I am not convinced about the family in the car being connected to relevant events, other than in passing.

To my (admittedly imperfect) ear they are speaking Dutch rather than Swiss German. Their car has yellow front plates which are used in the Netherlands but not, I think, widely elsewhere in Europe (Wiki suggests only Luxembourg).

I took them to be passing tourists who may just have been a dramatic device to take the viewer to the camper van, or else (at a push) may later respond to an appeal about it. Though it would be odd for an appeal to be made in the present day for any old abandoned camper van anywhere in Europe!

Charley50 · 27/10/2016 22:51

Lark. I agree; I think the people in the car were just a device used to show us the camper van.
Thought it was Sophie/Alice in the shed initially, but yes as the key was probably in the lock it could be anyone.
Think the Brigadier is a wrong'un too but generally have no idea what's going to happen.

Manumission · 27/10/2016 23:09

Lark. I agree; I think the people in the car were just a device used to show us the camper van.

I think that's what we're supposed to think.

But I think the mum in the car is the other Alice /Sophie (the REAL Alice presumably).

LarkDescending · 27/10/2016 23:11

Why is she Dutch then? I'd think real Alice is much more likely to be in or near the camper van.

LarkDescending · 27/10/2016 23:18

Or maybe Belgian rather than Dutch. Just checked the credits and they are:

Holiday Mother: Alexandra Oppo
Holiday Father: Guillaume Devos

Both appear from a google to be Flemish-speaking Belgian actors.

Manumission · 27/10/2016 23:23

There is a resemblance. But did they cast it like that to confuse?

LarkDescending · 27/10/2016 23:26

IMDB credits Alexandra Oppo only in this single episode, as "Holiday Mum".

Manumission · 27/10/2016 23:29

Are the cast lists up for future episodes now?

Dammit. I liked that theory Smile

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/10/2016 23:29

Wow. Just caught up with this weeks

So we now know how dad got burnt

And how Alice (or whoever) died

And the pic of girl on roller coaster. When was it taken? The one she thinks is Alice?

When we saw Nadia put teeth in I assumed it meant something - ie she lost her teeth somehow or had her teeth beaten out of her?

And what did the camper van mean?

Will go and read all the replies now
And theories

LarkDescending · 27/10/2016 23:36

IMDb credits Abigail Hardingham (as Alice Webster) up to and including next week's episode (ep 4), and Keeley Hawes (Gemma) throughout the 8-part series. So it does not just cover transmitted episodes.

EmilyDickinson · 28/10/2016 00:13

Thanks for the photos Manumission, holiday mum looks very young in those photos. Could easily be 22 like Alice and Sophie, though I guess if she only appears briefly in the most recent episode then she can't be either of them.

I'm still confused about the returned girl. I'm convinced that she's Sophie pretending to be Alice. As well as the finger touching seen in both young Sophie and the returned girl, Gemma's gut feeling that she isn't Alice and Julien's conviction that she is Sophie we now have the girl calling Gemma by her name rather than mum, her apparent (though she tried to hide it) distress on hearing of Sophie's mother's death and her understanding Julien when he spoke French to her.

What I don't understand is why she would pretend to be Alice. Even if Sophie's family or father is abusive Sophie is 22 and old enough to live apart from her family if she wishes. There was a case of a girl abducted as a child (Natasha something I think) who escaped at a similar early adult age. She'd had a troubled relationship with her mother before the abduction. I think that it was thought possible she'd run away and when she returned she soon decided that she didn't want anything to do with her family and was supported in this. At 22 Alice / Sophie doesn't have to live "this life" if she doesn't want to.

GreenMouse · 28/10/2016 00:19

I love all the theories on this thread!

One thing that puzzles me, if the returned girl is Sophie, is the conversation she had with her brother about the toy in the previous episode? Also she knows his nickname (midget). Although I suppose Alice could have told her these things in conversation during their captivity?

Can't wait for next week's episode!

GreenMouse · 28/10/2016 00:20

One thing that puzzles me among many other things, I should have said...

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/10/2016 01:20

Thanks giraffe. Baby brain does exist - mess me who you were/are on nj

Hmmmm read all conspiracy theories 😬

I don't think the mum in car is Sophie or Alice. It was just connecting the camper van being the same one just painted

The photo puzzled me so the mum saw pic of her daughter and said it was Alice. All thought she meant girl on right but she meant one in blue on left / tho looks like a boy

Pic of Sophie and Alice

The Missing is back next week!
Blondeshavemorefun · 28/10/2016 01:22

Pic of Alice and Sophie when young

They have long dark lank hair but that's about the similarity

Does the fact that I ff through all the episodes to then pause pic and take pic on my phone and edit in picture maker mean I'm mad 😬😬

The Missing is back next week!
Manumission · 28/10/2016 01:26

If you're mad blonde then I am too Grin

That rollercoaster picture is sneaky on the part of the director.

Sheepasaurus · 28/10/2016 01:56

Just a thought with regards to the tattoo..... A spiderweb because her surname is Webster?

LarkDescending · 28/10/2016 02:06

Yes I think someone suggested after Ep 1 that the web could be a reference to Webster. Seemed plausible to me.

Does anyone think the body in the shed could be Real Alice, placed there (already dead) by Fake Returning Alice with or without help from someone else, and incinerated with help of all that petrol? If so, any forensic work (dental records etc) will probably identify her as Alice, but it may be that the fire conceals the true cause and timing of her death.

If so, maybe Fake Returning Alice is in the camper van in present-day Switzerland?
