For those who loved it last time, will you watch after the let down of the ending? (Well I felt it was a let down, don't think there was a proper conclusion at all and still room for doubts as to whether he was still alive or not).

I loved it though and will definitely be watching the next series. I've seen the trailer and it looks very very good. Julian (think that was his name) is still in it. Looks like it is based on JayCee Dugard/Elizabeth Fritz type cases where they have gone missing as children and reappeared years later.

Cannot wait!

If she was brought up bilingual by an English mother than she would speak English with an English accent.

I have taught 10yos that I've met 6/7 years later and not known them, it's not the same as their mother but some children do really change.

Bob19702 · 27/10/2016 13:37

And the abductor could be English speaking ....

GreenGinger2 · 27/10/2016 14:23

Quandary me too.

MoonfaceAndSilky · 27/10/2016 14:32

There's something in the twins connection I think.

What did the German twins say about their Dad hitting their Mum down the stairs? I wonder if we know their Dad and he is involved somehow?
Ooh I think we've nearly cracked it Grin

CoshPunt · 27/10/2016 15:05

The only plausible explanation I can see for Eve is that she was maybe a surrogate for her sister? Makes sense why her sister would be annoyed at her working at 8 months pregnant, why she'd feel conflicted/not want to keep hold of scan photos of the baby, and why there'd be no baby in 2016?

mellongoose · 27/10/2016 15:23

I definitely think Eve is a twin. I said this as a joke on here after ep1! But the more I think about it we are taking for granted that we are always looking at Eve and that they are always referring to 'the sister'. What if the producers are showing both sisters, but only ever referring to Eve by name, so as to confuse us? Is Sam's affair with Eve or her sister?

Agree that Alice/Sophie could plausibly have an English accent, but that would mean she has spent her time with predominantly English people in that last 11/12 years.

I am still confused as to why Sam won't get the burns sorted. I don't buy the guilt theory.....he's done something bad since the fire and we don't know what yet.

In answer to Middle's question about s1. Ollie went missing in 2006 and the 'present day' in 2014. So Julien would have been working on both cases at the same time, yes? Will we see any cross over?

I don't believe the Brig has dementia. I think he's faking it (well) so that if it goes to trial they can't convict him.

Something fishy about the kid who comes to the butchers....there is more to this character. A potential witness, maybe.

The Daniel Reed/Dad bit is confusing me!!!

HRarehoundingme · 27/10/2016 16:15

moving I also agree that the family in the car could be something - Mum looks young enough, the town they were in wasn't a million miles away from the abduction place - it's not close but you could move there quite innocuously. Also depending on childs age - could the boy be Sophie's baby [probably too young]

Glastonbury · 27/10/2016 16:26

I wondered if Brig may have abused an Iraqi woman and Henry Reed was paying the girls dad as he felt bad about his comrades. He sounded like a nice man. He was probably killed by Brig when he found out.

JustDanceAddict · 27/10/2016 16:37

My theories:
Someone was in that van either alive or dead - pods dead if the dog was barking.
The body in the shed had been placed there - looked too 'old' to be in the fire.
Have no idea how they think 'real' Alice looks like Sophie from that rollercoaster still.

  • 'alice' def meant sorry for framing the butcher.
-brigadier meant Sophie or Alice when talking about Alabaster skin.

No idea re: Eve baby, where real Alice is, why 'Midget' has got together with thug twins, but I reckon they did in the butcher's wife.
Also no idea re Henry Reed's involvement.
Think there are 5 more episodes!!

HRarehoundingme · 27/10/2016 16:39

When the brother came out of the house on the night of the fire - i did think he was going to say - she's not in there; she's gone.

JustDanceAddict · 27/10/2016 16:39

I was saying there's no way I wouldn't recognise my own kids, esp DD as she's very distinctive-looking. Also most people have some distinguishing feature about them - scars, moles, birthmarks?!?

LizzieMacQueen · 27/10/2016 17:09

Was Henry receiving or paying money to the Iraqi?

Was the brigadier selling white babies - that he was fathering himself?

I too think the body in the shed might have been a random. They wouldn't use forensics if it was a clear case of suicide.

Rolocookies · 27/10/2016 17:14

Lizzie, I'm sure the son said the father was sending the money.

I love this thread Grin

Having binge watched all three episodes today, there is loads I have missed, according to this thread. You're all spookily clever at picking up clues!

I didn't watch series 1, is there anywhere I can watch that?

DownWithThisSortaThing · 27/10/2016 18:29

The spider web tattoo is bothering me. I don't think Alice did it herself in her bedroom like her mum said she did. Why would an 11 year old tattoo a spider web? And would it be that good? Perhaps the abductor did it? I think she was groomed before she was taken. And the same person groomed Sophie and tattooed her too.

Manumission · 27/10/2016 18:43

Series one is available on DVD jet, I don't think it's on iPlayer.

Manumission · 27/10/2016 18:46

Down I was wondering if maybe she did do it herself pre-abduction but that it referenced/reflected her feelings about something that was going on- maybe grooming or something she saw that she wasn't supposed to see - and perhaps part of the reason she was targeted for abduction was that she knew too much and had to be removed from the military base.

shins · 27/10/2016 19:23

Something that also came up on the Cold Feet thread...more pairing of men with much younger women. Keeley Hawes would've been 15 if she gave birth to Alice IRL but you couldn't have David Morrissey paired with someone his own age (52) could you? Hmm

Elendon · 27/10/2016 19:39

Hi all and enjoyed reading up on the theories so far. Very interesting thread.

I think the Brigadier and Val (Butcher's wife?) knew each other in the Biblical sense when in Iraq and might have taken the photo that she deleted.

Was the camper van spied by the little boy (that was a lovely little scene, quite a grizzly outcome) in the present day? If so then the dog may belong to someone walking in those gorgeous woods. I bet it wont be the last of it and Baptiste will make the connection.

I think the alabaster skinned girl was Alice, the brigadier really is a piece of work. He was taking medicines in 2014, just before the interview with Baptiste.

Sophie's dad must have been accused of something because he lost his job post his wife's suicide. What exactly?

Great series.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 27/10/2016 19:47

The tattoo isn't a web. It's a map!

Manumission · 27/10/2016 19:48

Whaaaat? A map?

Who has a picture? Smile

DownWithThisSortaThing · 27/10/2016 20:03

A map?
I don't know but I think it's significant. I was thinking spiders web = for catching prey and keeping it captive.
Theres 11 year old Alice's tattoo and the returned Alice/Sophie tattoo

HarryPottersMagicWand · 27/10/2016 20:39

I'm not sure if it is a map. It looks like a spider Web. I was coming on to say maybe it wasn't Alice who tattooed herself before she went missing and someone did it to her. A 'branding' of sorts, which is why Sophie had one too.

I was also going to say the key in the lock was focused upon last week so could be significant. I'm assuming it wasn't in the lock this week as the dad tried to kick the door in after touching the lock, if the key had been in it, he would have unlocked the door. So possibly Sophie is acting under instructions again and the whole sleeping in the shed thing has been pre planned and that's why she has been so insistent about it, plus why she went and got the petrol. Why would you commit suicide that way, it would be horrific. Key left in, someone came at night and let her out, placed body in the shed and Sophie has gone somewhere else. Body is buried as Alice as they have just assumed due to knowing the brother locked her in.

Ciutadella · 27/10/2016 20:43

Another theory. Could Sophie alice have killed the abductor when she escaped, and be frightened (irrationally i accept) that she'll be found out - so has faked her death. With help from whom? And if so, who was the body in the shed? Not real alice i hope, but i have my fears.

In real life surely they would have forensically id'd the body in the shed though?

Do the dates fit with henry dying just as sophie alice escaped - then brig helped make it look as though henry had killed himself, and warned sophie alice to keep her trap shut - actually to help her? We saw a shot of brig at the beginning which we didn't see last week, looking very mournful and remorseful after alice had gone back in from the garden after that conversation.
